[A case of very rare tuberculosis of the testis].

A 61-year old man visited our hospital with a painless swelling of right scrotal contents as the chief complaint. Transillumination test of the right scrotal contents was negative, and a quail's egg sized, elastic hard and smooth induration in the right testis was palpable. The laboratory data were normal except for slightly elevated E.S.R and CRP. Urine examination was normal. Although not only tumor marker, beta-hCG, AFP and LDH but also Plain lung X-ray, DIP and CT were normal, ultrasonography and MRI revealed a well-defined nodule in the right testis. Under the diagnosis of right testicula

Mitochondrial cytochrome b motif architecture predicts host-specific genomic vulnerability across vertebrate species.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) plays a pivotal role in cellular bioenergetics, immune regulation, and evolutionary adaptation, making it a uniquely informative genomic system for studying host-pathogen interactions. The cytochrome b (cyt b) gene, one of the most conserved mitochondrial protein-coding loci, is widely recognized for its utility in species identification, phylogenetics, and molecular evolution [1-3]. However, its potential role in shaping comparative host susceptibility to infectious diseases remains underexplored. In this study, we re-analyzed PCR-RFLP-derived mitochondrial cyt b res

A case of recurring hepatocellular carcinoma with a solitary Virchow's lymph node metastasis.

A 73-year-old male with C type liver cirrhosis and poor liver function reserve was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)(Segment V, 2 x 2 cm in diameter) and underwent open microwave coagulation therapy (MCT). Ten months later, a movable hard mass about the size of a quail egg was palpable at the left supra-clavicular lymph node (LN)(Virchow's LN) and blood tests revealed an elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level of 26.7 ng/dl. Abdominal and chest CT showed no evidence of recurrence in liver or lung, and no metastases of abdominal LN. Barium and bone scintigraphy revealed no abno

Lectin ingestion : changes in mucin secretion and bacterial adhesion to intestinal tissue.

Phytohemagglutinin (PHA), the lectin derived from red kidney been (Phaseolus vulgarus) causes reduced growth rates in several animal species, when incorporated at 0.5-5% of dietary protein. Lectin feeding results in diarrhea, impaired nutrient absorption, growth rate inhibition, and can even lead to the eventual death of PHA-fed animals. These effects are believed to result from changes in the autochthonous microflora induced by the presence of PHA in the diet, as germ-free animals do not display the same changes seen in conventional animals (1-11) Jayne-Williams' (1,2) now classical studies i

Liquid Metal Microrobots for Magnetically Guided Transvascular Navigation.

Soft microrobots, compared with their rigid counterparts, offer superior adaptability in dynamic and confined biological environments. Here, magnetically-guided liquid metal microrobots composed of gallium-indium alloys embedded with Fe nanoparticles are introduced. The unique combination of magnetic maneuverability, high surface tension, intrinsic radiopacity, and deformability allows liquid metal-based microbots to overcome limitations of both hard microrobots and fragile droplet-based systems. Under magnetic actuation, liquid metal-based magnetic microrobots exhibit controllable rolling and

Interspecies variability in hepatic vitamin K reserves - implications for anticoagulant rodenticide sensitivity and ecotoxicological risk assessment.

The extensive use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) for rodent control has resulted in widespread exposure of non-target animals, with notable differences in susceptibility between species. Vitamin K reserves, which are essential for counteracting AR-induced coagulopathy, may partly explain this variability. This study assessed vitamin K status in 678 animals representing 31 mammalian and avian species. Hepatic concentrations of phylloquinone (K1) and menaquinone-4 (MK4) levels were quantified, revealing substantial interspecies variation influenced by dietary patterns and seasonal changes.

Serovars and Antimicrobial Resistance of Salmonella in Food Workers and Livestock Products: Insights into Foodborne Transmission Pathways in Eastern Japan.

Salmonella is a major cause of infectious enteritis worldwide. In Japan, S. Schwarzengrund, S. Infantis, and S. Thompson are common in broilers and laying hens and are frequently detected in patients with salmonellosis and food workers. Monophasic S. Typhimurium, also found in these populations, often exhibits multidrug resistance. However, multidrug-resistant monophasic S. Typhimurium has not been reported from domestic poultry, suggesting that other livestock products may be potential sources. Therefore, we examined Salmonella prevalence in retail pork, beef, and quail eggs, and characterize

Effects of female-specific selection for reproductive investment on male fertility traits.

Despite sharing an autosomal genome, the often divergent reproductive strategies of males and females cause the selection to act in a sex-specific manner. Selection acting on one sex can have negative, positive, or neutral fitness consequences on the opposite sex. Here, we test how female-limited selection on reproductive investment in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) affects male fertility-related traits. Despite there being no difference in the size of males' testes from lines selected for high female reproductive investment (H-line) or low female reproductive investment (L-line), in both

Comparative analysis reveals the underlying mechanism of vertebrate seasonal reproduction.

Animals utilize photoperiodic changes as a calendar to regulate seasonal reproduction. Birds have highly sophisticated photoperiodic mechanisms and functional genomics analysis in quail uncovered the signal transduction pathway regulating avian seasonal reproduction. Birds detect light with deep brain photoreceptors. Long day (LD) stimulus induces secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pars tuberalis (PT) of the pituitary gland. PT-derived TSH locally activates thyroid hormone (TH) in the hypothalamus, which induces gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and hence gonadotropin

Mode of action and functional significance of 7α-hydroxypregnenolone stimulating locomotor activity.

Previous studies over the past two decades have demonstrated that the brain and other nervous systems possess key steroidogenic enzymes and produces pregnenolone and other various neurosteroids in vertebrates in general. Recently, 7α-hydroxypregnenolone, a novel bioactive neurosteroid, was identified in the brain of newts and quail. Importantly, this novel neurosteroid is produced from pregnenolone through the enzymatic activity of cytochrome P450(7α) and acts on brain tissue as a neuronal modulator to stimulate locomotor activity in these vertebrates. Subsequently, the mode of action of 7α-hy

Prevalent serotypes of Pasteurella multocida isolated from different animal and avian species in India.

Identification and estimation of the prevalence of Pasteurella multocida organisms in different animal and avian species in India during November 2000 to July 2003 was carried out. Out of 418 samples collected from different outbreaks suspected to be caused by P. multocida, a total of 206 bacterial cultures were identified as P. multocida on the basis of cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics. All the 206 cultures were isolated from different domestic animal species (cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig and rabbit), avian species (chicken, duck, quail, turkey, goose) and wild ani

Avian reoviruses: propagation, quantification, and storage.

Avian reoviruses (ARVs) are pathogens that cause significant morbidity among commercial poultry. ARVs are prototypic representatives of non-enveloped viruses that can cause cell-cell fusion. They belong to the Reoviridae family, which contains many highly pathogenic viruses. ARVs are ubiquitous in commercial poultry and are frequently isolated from the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts of chickens with acute infections. The virus causes a range of disease states in chicken, including viral arthritis/tenosynovitis, gastroenteritis, hepatitis, myocarditis, "pale bird syndrome," runting-stu

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone and its receptor in the avian reproductive system.

Many hormones that are classified as neuropeptides are synthesized in vertebrate gonads in addition to the brain. Receptors for these hormones are also expressed in gonadal tissue; thus there is potential for a highly localized autocrine or paracrine effect of these hormones on a variety of gonadal functions. In the present study we focused on gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH), a neuropeptide that was first discovered in the hypothalamus of birds. We present different lines of evidence for the synthesis of GnIH and its receptor in the avian reproductive system including gonads and accesso

Cardioprotective effects of Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides on thiacloprid-induced cardiac injury via modulating mitochondrial dynamics.

Thiacloprid (THI), a widely used neonicotinoid pesticide, has been shown to induce cardiac injury, though the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides (DOP), a bioactive compound with potent antioxidant properties, may offer protection against such toxicity. This study investigated the cardioprotective effects of DOP in THI-induced cardiac injury in quails, with a particular focus on the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway. Network pharmacology analysis identified key targets of DOP, linking them to oxidative stress,

Two isomeric and distinguishable H2S fluorescence probes for monitoring spoilage of eggs and visualizing exogenous and endogenous H2S in living cells.

Accurate fabrication of fluorescence probes to efficiently monitor and detect H2S levels in the fields of foodstuffs and physiology is crucial. Herein, we report two isomeric phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole benzene sulfonamide-derived fluorescence probes (PI-2-SA and PI-4-SA), both of which display remarkable responses toward H2S over other analytes. The spectral characteristics of the two probes were investigated and are discussed in detail. By comparison, PI-2-SA was specific, sensitive (the limit of detection was ca. 12.3 nM), rapid (within ≤3 min) and dynamic (the rate constant was 0.02 s-1).

Histological properties of the nasal cavity and olfactory bulb of the Japanese jungle crow Corvus macrorhynchos.

The nasal cavity and olfactory bulb (OB) of the Japanese jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos) were studied using computed tomography (CT) and histochemical staining. The nasal septum divided the nasal cavity in half. The anterior and maxillary conchae were present on both sides of the nasal cavity, but the posterior concha was indistinct. A small OB was present on the ventral surface of the periphery of the cerebrum. The OB-brain ratio--the ratio of the size of the OB to that of the cerebral hemisphere--was 6.13. The olfactory nerve bundles projected independently to the OB, which appeared fused

Tissue-specific expression of onco-fetal antigens during embryogenesis.

It has become evident from recent literature that especially in tumor virus systems, cell transformation leads to an arrest of differentiation or to a retrodifferentiation. This may be reflected by the expression of embryonic antigens and it is therefore particularly important to characterize such antigens according to their specificity as well as to their specificity during embryogenesis. We have demonstrated the expression of embryonic antigens which are cross-reactive in avian fibroblasts transformed either by Rous sarcoma virus or by methylcholanthrene. This paper is intended to demonstrat

[Rhabdomyolysis in acute intoxications (author's transl)].

During acute intoxications rhabdomyolysis appear with a great clinical polymorphism. The muscular involvement is not always evident because of its shortness and latence. Practically the problem is one of localised muscle damage, hyperkaliema or acute renal insufficiency. The serum isoenzymes of CPK levels, the presence of myoglobinuria are necessary for the diagnosis. The most serious rhabdomyolysis depend on the added injury of respiratory muscles and myocardium. Many toxic substances can involve rhabdomyolysis but the most frequent ones are sedatives, carbonic oxyde, ethanol. Only the compli

Animal models of necrotizing enterocolitis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the leading causes of death in premature infants. To determine the factors present in the disease that lead to increased morbidity and mortality, manipulation of variables that are shown to have a positive response has been tested using various animal models. Testing and manipulation of these variables are unwarranted in humans due to regulatory health standards. METHODS: The purpose of this review is to provide an update to previous summaries that determine the significance of animal models in studying the mechanisms of NEC. A large varie
