[Effect of mexidol on hemopoietic system in conditions of an emotional stress after exposure to ionizing radiation].

The emotional stress after an irradiation can complicate the current of radiative defeats. At an emotional stress developing in early terms after an irradiation in low doses, are reduced adaptive and compensator capabilities of hemopoietic system. The emotional stress after a lethal dose irradiation inhibits the post-radiation recovery of haemopoiesis, aggravates the course of acute radiation disease and decreases the efficiency of the radioprotector--indralin. These disorders are especially pronounced under a prolonged and intensive stress. The use of the mexidol, having anxiolytic and antist

Estimation of the genetic risks of exposure to ionizing radiation in humans: current status and emerging perspectives.

The 2001 report of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) on ;Hereditary effects of radiation' incorporates two important concepts that have emerged from advances in radiation genetics and molecular biology: (a) most radiation-induced mutations are DNA deletions, often encompassing multiple genes; however, because of structural and functional constraints, only a proportion of induced deletions may be compatible with viability and hence recoverable in the progeny and (b) viability-compatible DNA deletions induced in human germ cells are more likely

[The remote effects of chronic exposure to ionizing radiation and electromagnetic fields with respect to hygienic standardization].

A variety and rate of non-cancer diseases occurred in humans as a result of chronic exposure to ionizing radiation or to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of high and superhigh frequency have been compared. The intensity of EMR was slightly higher than a sanitary standard for population. A risk of health impairments in workers having occupational exposure to EMR was assessed on the basis of Selie's concept of development of non-specific reaction of the body to chronic stress factors (general adaptation syndrome), models of changes in the body compensatory reserves and calculations of radiation r

[Patterns in the compensatory reaction of the precursor cell system of the bone marrow fibroblasts to ionizing radiation].

Compensatory unspecific processes taking place in irradiated bone marrow stroma are caused by qualitative and quantitative reactions of the stromal cell populations to the damaging effect. The authors studied the regularities of the compensatory quantitative reaction of the stroma--the system of fibroblast colony forming units (CFUf) of guinea-pig bone marrow--to exposure to ionizing radiation. They confirmed the existence of a "reserve" of the bone marrow CFUf system whose cell elements acquire adhesive and mitotic activity in the immediate periods (60-90 minutes) after irradiation. It is sho

Ionizing radiation-induced remodelling of the heart: Cellular pathways and crosstalk relevant to stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation (STAR).

Stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation (STAR) has emerged as a promising non-invasive therapy for refractory ventricular tachycardia, yet its biological mechanisms remain poorly defined. While conventional catheter ablation achieves arrhythmia control through structural remodelling, radiotherapy was initially assumed to act similarly. However, STAR reduces ventricular arrhythmia burden within weeks, preceding the development of radiation-induced structural remodelling. This temporal mismatch indicates that early anti-arrhythmic effects are probably driven by functional adaptations. Human tissue

Low-dose ionizing radiation exposure and tumor risk: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) arises from medical, occupational, and environmental sources, but cancer risks at low doses remain debated. We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses on low-dose-relevant ionizing radiation exposure and observed tumor occurrence. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Epistemonikos for publications through July 2026. Findings were synthesized descriptively by exposure context and cancer type. We assessed methodological quality using AMSTAR 2, classified temporal exposure patterns and dose

The Association of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (GPER) Polymorphisms with Ionizing Radiation Exposure in Healthcare Workers.

Background/Objectives: The G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) is known to interact with cellular stress responses and DNA damage pathways. Therefore, exposure to ionizing radiation may modulate the biological consequences of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the GPR30 gene. This study aims to evaluate the association between GPER polymorphisms and radiation sensitivity. Methods: The study included 50 healthcare workers exposed to ionizing radiation and 36 healthy individuals with no known occupational exposure to radiation. Genomic DNA was isolated and PCR products were purified using

Transformation of p,p'-DDT in ethanol under ionizing radiation: Mechanistic and qualitative characterization by GC-MS.

In this study, γ-radiolytic degradation of p,p'-DDT in ethanol was investigated under ionizing γ rays from 60Co source and the results have been reported. Strong dependence of DDT degradation on absorbed dose was observed. Nearly 100% transformation of 0.3 g L-1 initial concentrated DDT has been achieved at absorbed doses above 24 kGy. GC-MS analysis revealed the transient formation of reductive and oxidative conversion products. p,p'-DDD and p,p'-DDMS identified as primary and major intermediates, followed by further transformation into less chlorinated and recombination products at higher ab

Response of Male Reproductive System against Ionizing Radiation and Available Radio-protective Agents: Cellular and Molecular Insight.

BACKGROUND: The reproductive organ, housing spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs), undergoes ongoing division impacted by the irradiation dosage and exposure duration. Within the male reproductive organ, germ stem cells (spermatogonia) and somatic cells (Sertoli and Leydig cells) are present. Lower doses of ionizing (>4-6 Gy) and non-ionizing radiation (radiofrequency and microwave range 900 MHz - 2.45 GHz) may cause sperm-related issues, while higher doses (15 Gy) may affect Leydig cells and testosterone production. Response to radiation varies with age and pubescence. Spermatogonial stem cells, c

Subtherapeutic Dose of Ionizing Radiation Reprograms the Pre-Metastatic Lung Niche, Accelerating Its Formation and Promoting Metastasis.

Pre-metastatic niche (PMN) formation is a critical step in metastatic progression. However, the biological effects of subtherapeutic doses of ionizing radiation (SDIRs) following radiotherapy on this process remain unclear. Using a 4T1 breast cancer mouse model, we investigated the effects of SDIRs (3 × 0.3 Gy) on lung PMN development and metastasis upon SDIR exposure on days 8-10 post-tumor injection, followed by mastectomy and analyzed on day 24. SDIRs significantly increased the total metastatic volume (TMV) in lungs, suggesting an accelerated PMN formation. Mechanistically, the SDIR acted

Delineating the short- and long-term impact of ionizing radiation on antigen-inexperienced CD8+ T cell subsets.

Radiation-induced lymphopenia (RIL) remains a challenging side effect of radiation therapy that is often associated with poor prognosis and reduced overall survival. Although CD8+ T cells are highly radiosensitive, the dynamics of quantitative and qualitative changes to the CD8+ T cell pool following exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation (IR) remain understudied. Herein, we sought to determine the long-term impact of sublethal whole body irradiation (WBI) on the antigen-inexperienced (Ag-inexperienced) CD8+ T cell pool, comprising naive (TN) and virtual memory (TVM) CD8+ T cells. We sho

Low-Dose Caffeine Exposure Protects the Human Genome from Ionizing Radiation-Induced Damage and Prolongs Mouse Longevity.

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world and is a rich source of caffeine, a methylxanthine. Here we show that exposure to caffeine significantly reduces ionizing radiation (IR) induced DNA breaks and resulted in no or minimal G2/M arrest within the human cell, in contrast to IR alone. At the molecular level, we demonstrate that when naked plasmid DNA or oligomeric DNA was irradiated, the number of breaks was significantly less in the presence of caffeine. The observed radioprotection was irrespective of its sequence and was due to quenching of ROS by caffeine. Besides,

Micronucleus abnormalities and sex differences in medical staff exposed to occupational ionizing radiation: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term occupational exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation increases the risk of genetic damage among medical staff. Micronucleus (MN) frequency is a sensitive biomarker of chromosomal damage and genomic instability, but the influence of sex on MN responses to chronic radiation exposure remains insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess sex - related differences between male and female healthcare workers in MN frequency abnormalities among those chronically exposed to ionizing radiation and to explore potential biological and occupational determinants und

Prophylactically Feeding Manganese to Drosophila Confers Sex-Specific Protection from Acute Ionizing Radiation Independent of MnSOD2 Levels.

Ionizing radiation is a health threat to many, including warfighters, radiological emergency responders, radiotherapy patients, and astronauts. Despite this, no FDA-approved prophylactic medical countermeasures exist to attenuate the symptoms that occur from radiation exposure. Manganese has recently been shown to be critical for radioresistance in a wide range of organisms. In this study, we designed a stringent feeding method to test the prophylactic effects of dietary manganese on Drosophila's lifespan before exposure to acute irradiation. We found that male flies have substantially lower r

Retinoids in lipofuscin granules from retinal pigment epithelium as biomarkers of the damaging effect of ionizing radiation.

Lipofuscin granules accumulate in the retinal pigment epithelium with age, especially in patients with visual diseases, including progressive age-related macular degeneration. Retinoids (bisretinoids and their oxidation products) are major sources of lipofuscin granule fluorescence. The aim of this work was to analyze the radiation-mediated oxidation of retinoids in lipofuscin granules obtained from the human cadaver eye retinal pigment epithelium. Fluorescent and chromatographic analyses of retinoids were performed before and after irradiation of lipofuscin granules with accelerated protons.
