Multiple linear regression models for individualized radiation exposure planning in dark-field chest radiography.

BACKGROUND: Clinical X-ray dark-field radiography has shown to be promising for visualizing different lung pathologies. To keep the radiation dose as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA principle), individualized exposure planning is necessary. However, the current scanning-based implementation of dark-field radiography complicates the use of automatic exposure control. Previously, a BMI-based linear regression model was proposed as a substitute. Here, we aim to improve this proposed model by investigating multiple linear regression for patient-individual exposure planning of dark-field chest

Radiation Exposure in Percutaneous Zadek Osteotomy vs Open Haglund Resection: A Retrospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopy is a vital imaging technique in orthopaedic surgery, particularly with the growing adoption of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Because of their increased reliance on intraoperative imaging, MIS techniques may necessitate greater use of fluoroscopy and radiation compared with open procedures; therefore, the use of modern mini C-arm systems is recommended to mitigate radiation exposure. Although MIS offers significant benefits, its use also raises concerns regarding radiation exposure for both patients and surgical staff. This study evaluated radiation dose and fluorosc…

Early oxidation-related changes in aqueous humor following eye exposure to ultraviolet-A radiation.

Ultraviolet (UV) A represents 95% of the UV rays reaching the ocular surface. These rays exert their toxicity mainly via photosensitization reactions that generate oxidation and are implicated in various pathologies of the anterior segment of the eye. The cornea absorbs some UVA rays, but the majority passes through the aqueous humor (AH) to reach the lens. Previous work has mainly focused on understanding the consequences of UVA exposure on the cornea and lens, but the AH has been largely ignored. AH contains a high concentration of antioxidants and thus represents a key line of defense again

Radiological follow-up in patients with resected pulmonary carcinoids: Should we reduce radiation exposure?

INTRODUCTION: After primary resection of pulmonary carcinoids, the recurrence rate is low (approximately 10 %). However, long-term radiological follow-up is generally recommended due to the risk of late recurrence. This must be weighed against risk of radiation-induced cancer, particularly in young patients. METHODS: The frequency and modality of radiological follow-up according to the ENETS, ESMO, and CommNETs-NANETS guidelines were assessed. Cumulative radiation exposure per guideline and subsequent increased lifetime cancer risk were estimated using sex- and age-dependent risk factors. Dat…

Transcriptome analysis in mouse skin after exposure to ultraviolet radiation from a canopy sunbed.

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV-R), from both natural and artificial tanning, heightens the risk of skin cancer by inducing molecular changes in cells and tissues. Despite established transcriptional alterations at a molecular level due to UV-R exposure, uncertainties persist regarding UV radiation characterization and subsequent genomic changes. Our study aimed to mechanistically explore dose- and time-dependent gene expression changes, that may drive short-term (e.g., sunburn) and long-term actinic (e.g., skin cancer) consequences. Using C57BL/6N mouse skin, we analyzed transcriptomic

Surface Degradation of Thin-Layer Al/MgF2 Mirrors under Exposure to Powerful VUV Radiation.

Thin-layer Al/MgF2 coatings are currently used for extraterrestrial far-UV astronomy as the primary and secondary mirrors of telescopes (such as "Spektr-UF"). Successful Hubble far-UV measurements have been performed thanks to MgF2 on Al mirror coatings. Damage of such thin-layer coatings has been previously studied under exposure to high-energy electrons/protons fluxes and in low Earth orbit environments. Meanwhile, there is an interest to test the stability of such mirrors under the impact of extreme radiation fluxes from pulsed plasma thrusters as a simulation of emergency onboard situation

Risk of hematological malignancies from CT radiation exposure in children, adolescents and young adults.

Over one million European children undergo computed tomography (CT) scans annually. Although moderate- to high-dose ionizing radiation exposure is an established risk factor for hematological malignancies, risks at CT examination dose levels remain uncertain. Here we followed up a multinational cohort (EPI-CT) of 948,174 individuals who underwent CT examinations before age 22 years in nine European countries. Radiation doses to the active bone marrow were estimated on the basis of body part scanned, patient characteristics, time period and inferred CT technical parameters. We found an associat…

ICNIRP Guidelines' Exposure Assessment Method for 5G Millimetre Wave Radiation May Trigger Adverse Effects.

The current global roll-out of 5G infrastructure is designed to utilise millimetre wave frequencies (30-300 GHz range) at data transmission rates in the order of gigabits per second (Gbps). This frequency band will be transmitted using beamforming, a new introduction in near-field exposures. The International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has recently updated their guidelines. We briefly examine whether the new approach of the ICNIRP is satisfactory to prevent heat damage and other adverse bio-effects once millimetre wave 5G is included, and we challenge the use of s

Radiation exposure during angiographic interventions in interventional radiology - risk and fate of advanced procedures.

PURPOSE: Advanced angiographic procedures in interventional radiology are becoming more important and are more frequently used, especially in the treatment of several acute life-threatening diseases like stroke or aortic injury. In recent years, technical advancement has led to a broader spectrum of interventions and complex procedures with longer fluoroscopy times. This involves the risk of higher dose exposures, which, in rare cases, may cause deterministic radiation effects, e.g. erythema in patients undergoing angiographic procedures. Against this background, these procedures recently also

Dose and time dependence of functional impairments in rat jejunum following ionizing radiation exposure.

Ionizing radiation causes dramatic change in the transport and barrier functions of the intestine. The degree of radiation damage rate depends primarily on the absorbed dose and post-irradiation time. Variety of experimental protocols providing different time points and doses exist, with the lack of a common approach. In this study, to develop a unified convenient experimental scheme, dose and time dependence of barrier and transport properties of rat jejunum following ionizing radiation exposure were examined. Male Wistar rats were exposed to total body X-ray irradiation (2, 5, or 10 Gy). The…
