Topical application of beta-radiation to reduce intimal hyperplasia after carotid artery balloon injury in rabbit. A possible application for brachytherapy in vascular surgery.

PURPOSE: Endovascular brachytherapy for the prevention of intimal hyperplasia (IH) and restenosis after balloon/stent angioplasty has proven effective both in animal preparations and clinical trials. A variety of beta-emitting isotopes and catheter-based devices have been developed for the delivery of low-dose radiation in clinical coronary and peripheral trials. No platform, however, has yet been developed for brachytherapy in concert with vascular surgical operations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the vascular histopathologic response following balloon injury to rabbit carotid ar

Multifunctional Oral Hydrogel Containing Dual-Active Pt/Mn3O4 Nanozyme for Synergistic Pyroptosis Suppression and Gut Microenvironment Reprogramming to Alleviate Radiation Intestinal Injury.

Radiation intestinal injury (RII) is a severe complication of abdominal and pelvic radiotherapy, driven by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), pyroptotic cell death, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Conventional antioxidants are insufficient, as radical scavenging alone cannot suppress pyroptosis or restore immune-microbiota balance. Herein, we developed a Pt/Mn3O4 nanozyme-curcumin co-loaded multifunctional oral hydrogel (PMC@Gel), which integrates dual-active catalysis and autophagy induction for comprehensive intervention. The heterostructured Pt/Mn3O4 nanozyme exhibits a core-satellite a

Low-dose radiation ameliorates PM2.5-induced lung injury through non-canonical TLR1/TLR2-like receptor pathways modulated by Akkermansia muciniphila.

Exposure of PM2.5 can cause different degrees of lung injury, which is referred with inflammatory response. Some evidences showed that low-dose radiation (LDR) induces hormesis in immune, however, it is unknown if LDR ameliorates the PM2.5-induced lung injury. Additionally, gut microbiota and inflammation are crucial in lung injury and the health benefits of LDR through gut microbiota need further exploration. Here, we aim to investigate the impact of LDR on PM2.5-induced lung injury in vivo and in vitro, and elucidated the potential mechanisms of anti-inflammation activated by gut microbiota.

METTL3 Mediates Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition by Modulating FOXO1 mRNA N6 -Methyladenosine-Dependent YTHDF2 Binding: A Novel Mechanism of Radiation-Induced Lung Injury.

The biological roles of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the pathogenesis of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) have been widely demonstrated, but the mechanisms involved have been incompletely elucidated. N6 -methyladenosine (m6 A) modification, the most abundant reversible methylation modification in eukaryotic mRNAs, plays vital roles in multiple biological processes. Whether and how m6 A modification participates in ionizing radiation (IR)-induced EMT and RILI remain unclear. Here, significantly increased m6 A levels upon IR-induced EMT are detected both in vivo and in vitro. F

Jiawei Maxing Shigan Tang alleviates radiation-induced lung injury via TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway mediated by regulatory T cells.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is a common complication during thoracic radiotherapy which impairs the quality of life in patients and limits radiation doses. Jiawei Maxing Shigan Tang (JMST), which is a modified decoction made of Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Gypsum, and Licorice, can alleviate the symptoms of RILI in patients. Previous studies and preliminary findings suggested a potential molecular mechanism of JMST in the treatment of RILI. Further studies are needed. AIM OF THE STUDY: To elucidate the mechanisms of how regulatory T cells (Tregs) promote R

Physiological consequences of space flight, including abnormal bone metabolism, space radiation injury, and circadian clock dysregulation: Implications of melatonin use and regulation as a countermeasure.

Exposure to the space environment induces a number of pathophysiological outcomes in astronauts, including bone demineralization, sleep disorders, circadian clock dysregulation, cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunction, and reduced immune system function. A recent report describing experiments aboard the Space Shuttle mission, STS-132, showed that the level of melatonin, a hormone that provides the biochemical signal of darkness, was decreased during microgravity in an in vitro culture model. Additionally, abnormal lighting conditions in outer space, such as low light intensity in orbital spac

Cumulative effective radiation dose received by blunt trauma patients arriving to a military level I trauma center from point of injury and interhospital transfers.

BACKGROUND: Trauma patients sustaining blunt injuries are exposed to multiple radiologic studies. Evidence indicates that the risk of cancer from exposure to ionizing radiation rises in direct proportion to the cumulative effective dose (CED) received. The purpose of this study is to quantify the amount of ionizing radiation accumulated when arriving directly from point of injury to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), a level I trauma center, compared with those transferred from other facilities. METHODS: A retrospective record review was conducted from 1st January 2010 through 31st

Engineered Young Brown Adipose Tissue-Derived Exosomes Alleviate Radiation-Induced Lung Injury by Promoting G Protein-Coupled Receptor 183 Ubiquitination.

Acute radiation-induced lung injury is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of radiotherapy for thoracic malignancies or accidental radiation exposure, characterized by high incidence, limited treatment options, and substantial mortality. To address the lack of effective therapies for preventing and treating radiation-induced lung injury, we developed an engineered nanoplatform, BAT-exo@Au, generated by functionalizing exosomes derived from young brown adipose tissue (BAT) with 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-polyethylene glycol-thiol (DSPE-PEG-SH) and gold n

Topical Glucocorticosteroids for Proactive Therapy of Acute Radiation-Induced Skin Injury in Head and Neck Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis with Trial Sequential Analysis.

Background: Acute radiation-induced skin injury (aRISI) is one of the most frequent adverse effects of radiotherapy (RT) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) and may compromise treatment delivery and quality of life. Topical glucocorticosteroids (GCS) are commonly used in clinical practice for aRISI management; however, evidence supporting their proactive use remains inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of proactive topical GCS therapy during RT for HNC. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library w

Hydrogel Spacer Rectal Wall Infiltration Associated With Severe Rectal Injury and Related Complications After Dose Intensified Prostate Cancer Stereotactic Ablative Radiation Therapy.

The risk of rectal toxicity during and after prostate cancer radiation therapy is common to all treatment regimens. Hydrogel rectal spacers are increasingly being used to mitigate this risk and to facilitate dose-escalation, but also may infiltrate the rectal wall, with unclear clinical implication. We present a case of significant infiltration associated with severe late rectal injury (grade 4) and further grade 3 to 4 sequelae (recto-urethral fistula and associated osteomyelitis requiring exenteration) after high-dose stereotactic body radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer.
