Imaging studies have greatly improved the understanding of the pathology and physiology of psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, affective disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and Tourette syndrome. In the past few years, several neuroimaging studies have concentrated on patients with eating disorders. Although the number of studies is small compared with studies of other psychiatric disorders, the results are beginning to highlight potential areas in the brain that may lead to a better understanding of these disorders. Much research still is needed, and replication of results acr

Ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a life-threatening arrhythmia common in patients with structural heart disease or nonischemic cardiomyopathy. Many VTs originate from regions of fibrotic scar tissue, where delayed electrical signals exit scar and re-enter viable myocardium. Cardiac stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has emerged as a completely noninvasive alternative to catheter ablation for the treatment of recurrent or refractory ventricular tachycardia. While there is no common consensus on the ideal imaging workflow, therapy planning for cardiac SBRT often combines information from a plu

In this work we introduce a technique to speed up the interpretation of bone scans with the aim of determining the presence or absence of metastatic disease. We use gray tone histograms, resembling the use of band-pass filters, in order to ensure a reliable interpretation of the bone scan, therefore providing an accurate diagnosis. We draw particular attention to three cases. The first case corresponds to shifted histograms. If the histogram is shifted toward the origin, the bone scan is free of metastasis. If it is shifted to the right and slightly broadened, this indicates the presence of a

Subclinical hyperthyroidism is defined as normal serum free thyroxine and a free triiodothyronine level, with a thyroid-stimulating hormone level suppressed below the normal range and is usually undetectable. Although patients with this diagnosis have no or few signs and symptoms of overt thyrotoxicosis, there is sufficient evidence that it is associated with a relatively higher risk of supraventricular arrhythmias as well as the acceleration or the development of osteoporosis. Consequently, the approach to the patient with subclinical hyperthyroidism is controversial, that is, therapeutic int

The thyroid is one of the larger endocrine glands in the body. The thyroid size is 15-20 gr. The gland produces hormones that regulate all metabolic processes in large number of tissues in the body, and produces hormones that affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body. Studies of the endocrine system are among the original procedures in nuclear medicine. Thyroid scintigraphy and radio-tracer uptake studies remain an important part of the practice of nuclear medicine. Scintigraphy reveals functional and anatomic status of thyroid gland. A systematic and complete in

General localization of gastrointestinal bleeding through the use of labeled red blood cells may be performed in children, or (99m)Tc-pertechnetate may be used if a Meckel's diverticulum is suspected. As in adults, cholecystitis and biliary leak may be assessed in children via (99m)Tc-IDA derivatives. Gastroesophageal reflux can be evaluated by oral consumption of the child's usual diet labeled with (99m)Tc sulfur colloid. For the scintigraphic determination of pulmonary aspiration, a relatively high concentration of tracer within a drop of liquid is placed beneath the child's tongue followed

BACKGROUND: The historical aspects of the pathophysiology and treatment of Graves' disease are briefly discussed in this paper.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The three treatment modalities of Graves' disease are anti-thyroid drug therapy, radioactive iodine therapy, and surgery. Although the majority of patients with Graves' disease in the U.S. are treated with radioactive iodine, surgery still plays an important role when patients cannot tolerate anti-thyroid drug therapy, when medical treatment is rejected by patients, or when surgery is deemed the fastest and safest route in managing the patient.

Diagnostic and classification guidelines for osteoarthritis based on clinical and radiographic signs for the most frequently involved joints (knee, hip and hand) have been developed by the American College of Rheumatology. Excellent, new 'high tech' biochemical and imaging methods and guidelines for clinical evaluation of the condition and its therapy have recently been developed and validated. Accordingly, we have consistent and reliable methods for assessing the established condition, but they provide little help in making an early and correct diagnosis for the different forms of osteoarthri

Contrast venography, the accepted gold standard for the diagnosis of venous thrombosis of the leg, is a painful and invasive procedure with late side effects. There is controversy in literature reports about the sensitivity of 99Tcm-macroaggregated albumin (MAA) phlebography: indeed, using 99Tcm-MAA, poor results are obtained when one has to detect calf vein thrombosis. As with other isotopic procedures requiring a pedal injection of the tracer, the use of an injectable solution of 81Krm is a nonspecific method, based upon the abnormality in flow in the deep venous system which results from a

The first pediatric case of hepatic hydatidosis diagnosed in Mexico is reported. Previous to surgery, the diagnosis was established, based on a cystic tumor of the liver, the X ray findings, defects in the liver uptake, eosinophilia and Casoni's positive intradermal reaction. Besides, the immunoelectrophoresis test showed specific antibodies. Clinical and epidemiological considerations, related with the pathology and treatment of hydatidic disease are made, stressing the importance to know the symtoms of the illness, in order to establish the diagnosis and treatment. Likewise, the prognosis is
