Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a manifestation of bone exposure in the maxillofacial region due to use of drugs such as bisphosphonates, anti-resorptive agents and anti-angiogenic agents. This G1- humanized monoclonal antibody neutralizes the activity of the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), thus reducing the vascularity of the tumor, which in turn, results in the inhibition of its growth. This case report is of a 53-year-old man with metastatic cholangiocarcinoma who received bevacizumab therapy for the past 11 months. Delayed healing of extraction sockets, os

Chronic hepatitis B infection remains a globally important cause of morbidity and mortality and has recently undergone a renaissance in therapeutic interest with increased pre-clinical and clinical testing of new drug classes. One of the first new classes in the clinic was RNA interference agents, which have the potential to impact the entire viral life cycle by reducing all virus-produced mRNA. Early clinical testing with the first of these agents in the clinic, ARC-520, demonstrated that rapid and deep reductions in viral proteins, RNA and DNA could be produced with this approach, but also t

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to summarize the role of the interleukin-1 (IL-1) blocking agents in cardiovascular diseases, briefly describing the pathogenetic rationale and the most relevant clinical studies.
RECENT FINDINGS: IL-1 is a pivotal cytokine of the innate immune system. Anti-IL-1 agents are currently used for the treatment of several autoimmune and autoinflammatory conditions. Recently, the role of IL-1 has also emerged in cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, two recent randomized controlled trials have shown that the IL-1 receptor antagonist anakinra is effective for the treatm

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, is an autosomal dominant disorder that causes abnormal blood vessel formation. The diagnosis of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia is clinical, based on the Curaçao criteria. Genetic mutations that have been identified include ENG, ACVRL1/ALK1, and MADH4/SMAD4, among others. Patients with HHT may have telangiectasias and arteriovenous malformations in various organs and suffer from many complications including bleeding, anemia, iron deficiency, and high-output heart failure. Families with the same mutatio

The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasing in under-developing and developing countries. As per current estimations, COPD will become the third leading cause of death globally, by 2030. Long-acting anti-cholinergic agents, β2-agonists, inhaled corticosteroids, antibiotics and mucolytics are few of the agents currently used in the treatment of COPD, which improve the symptoms and overall quality of life. Several of the important classes of antibiotics are used in the management of COPD including penicillins, cephalosporins, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, sulp

BACKGROUND: Obesity is one of the major problems of health policy in different countries. Pharmacological attempts have been made to help affected people without a definitive solution. Some agents--either with peripheral or central effect--are available in the market. On July 2012, the FDA approved two novel preparations for obese patients: (1) topiramate-phentermine--the first one an anticonvulsant and the second one a sympathomimetic amine--and (2) lorcaserin, a 5-HT2CR agonist. Both preparations emerged as new options for weight management.
SCOPE: Based on the complex biology of eating beh

PURPOSE: To answer the clinical question: In adults over 65 years of age with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), do pharmacological rhythm-control agents offer a lower risk of stroke when compared to pharmacological rate-control agents? To address whether or not rhythm control improves quality of life compared to rate control was a secondary outcome question.
DATA SOURCES: Comprehensive review of pharmacological treatment of AF on stroke and quality of life outcomes; a meta-analysis of five randomized controlled trials.
CONCLUSIONS: Research suggests that all AF patients should continue an

More than a decade after the first approval of the use of acetylcholine esterase inhibitor on patients with Alzheimer's disease, we still not have a single treatment or combination therapy that can effectively stop or reverse the relentless progression of such neurodegenerative disease. Recently therapeutics targeting amyloid hypothesis have undergone scrutiny by many clinical trials. These include gamma secretase inhibitor for reducing beta amyloid formation, agents for preventing aggregation of amyloid oligomers, and immunotherapy for enhancing clearance of amyloid and plaque. Therapies targ

Dentinal hypersensitivity is defined as short and transient painful response of exposed dentin, usually cervical, to different stimuli, such as thermal, mechanical osmotic or chemical. The etiology of dentinal hypersensitivity is open tubules (because of enamel loss or gingival recession), allowing painful stimulus to reach the pulp. The hydrodynamic theory explains the mechanism through which pain is aroused. When treating dentinal hypersensitivity, dentists always have to rule out other pathologies, such as carries, leakage, postoperative sensitivity, cracked tooth etc., and only then assess

Improved knowledge regarding the pathogenetic mechanisms involved in autoimmune diseases has contributed to the development of biological therapies, with advances in cytokine research in particular revolutionizing the treatment of several autoimmune diseases. Anti-TNF agents are the most promising drugs for reducing symptoms, slowing or arresting joint damage, and preventing functional disability in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who fail to respond to standard disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. Anti-TNF agents may also be useful in the treatment of other rare disorders, such as variou

A polymerizable cell is a requirement for sickle cell vaso-occlusion, but other factors clearly modulate the course of the disease. Hemolysis produces a young red cell population that is capable of adhesion and may result in polymer formation in cells that would otherwise have remained deformable during transit through the microcirculation owing to prolonged delay time for polymerization. In addition, a young red cell population will have a higher activity of K:Cl cotransport, which is capable of rapidly dehydrating cells under acid conditions, thus promoting a vicious circle of hemolysis and

The clinical benefit of aspirin in the acute phase of myocardial infarction is dramatically suggested by the results of the ISIS-2 trial. However, the time course of pathophysiological events that lead to such a determining involvement of platelets still appears uncertain and further study is needed to single out exactly how early and how long antiplatelet drugs should be given, since there is a risk of bleeding complications due to the combination of the different antithrombotic therapies. Thrombolytic agents and heparin are in fact widely used for patients with acute myocardial infarction, e

The calcium antagonists are effective and safe agents for the treatment of arterial hypertension. They are well tolerated by the patients. In contrast to other types of antihypertensive agents, they cause few metabolic disturbances. They can be combined with diuretics, beta-blockers, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. They can be safely prescribed to patients with hypertension and concomitant diseases such as diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive lung disease, congestive heart failure, gout, renal failure, peripheral atherosclerotic disease, or Raynaud's phenomenon. alpha 2-Adrenoceptors mediate a variety of physiological functions in the central nervous system and in peripheral tissues; thus, the use of pharmacological agents either activating or blocking these receptors results in a mixture of responses from several organs and tissues. This may be utilized therapeutically in some situations. In anaesthesiology, alpha 2-adrenergic agonists are already widely used as veterinary sedative-analgesics, and it is now clear that they are also capable of potentiating the effects and reducing the required dosage of other drugs used in anaesthesia (barbiturates, v

Herpetic keratitis is a common condition which can produce severe complications. The pattern of disease created by the virus depends on an interaction of virus and host mediated mechanisms. The changes in the epithelium are a consequence of the cytopathic effect of the virus and are related directly to virus replication. Changes produced in the stroma are due to inflammatory mechanisms initiated by the presence of virus antigens. The treatment of epithelial disease is aimed at reducing virus replication. The treatment of stromal disease is directed towards suppressing inflammation without incr

During the past 10 years the concepts of total reverse isolation using laminar air flow rooms and alimentary canal microbial suppression using oral nonabsorbable antibiotics have each been proved effective in reducing serious infection for patients with profound, prolonged granulocytopenia. When these two modalities are combined, the net reduction in infections is about 75%. Oral nonabsorbable antibiotics, however, are poorly tolerated, costly, and frequently associated with the acquisition of resistant gram-negative rods when used outside the laminar air flow room setting. The concept of colo

Physiological oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in supporting proper growth and development. While moderate oxidative stress is essential for activating key metabolic pathways and maintaining normal cellular signaling, excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) can overwhelm the immature antioxidant systems of newborns, potentially leading to cellular damage and impaired physiological function. This vulnerability is particularly pronounced in the central nervous system, where limited detoxification capacity exacerbates the risk of oxidative damage, following hypoxic-ischemic ev

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris a chronic disease which is caused by blockage of the sebaceous gland is commonly seen in almost every human being at some point in their lives. There are 20-25% chances of progression of acne to severe cases, which leads to permanent scarring that results in psychological problems like depression, social isolation, lowered self-esteem, and lowered self-confidence.
OBJECTIVE: Though several conventional treatments are available in the market but still there are various adverse effects associated with topical anti-acne agents due to which it lacks patient compatibility

The purpose of this study was to compare the relative efficacy and technical ease of use of eight different agents for endoscopic hemostasis and obliteration of bleeding gastric varices in a canine model, as no comparative data are available on gastric variceal sclerotherapy. Large bleeding gastric varices in 20 heparinized dogs were randomized to endoscopic injection treatment with one of the following agents: cyanoacrylate; a 1:1:1 mixture of sodium tetradecyl sulfate 3%, ethanol 98%, and normal saline solution; ethanolamine oleate 5%; sodium morrhuate 5%; sodium tetradecyl sulfate 1.5%; pol

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is increasingly prevalent and closely linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). These metabolic conditions not only represent drivers of disease progression, but also as therapeutic targets for modifying the disease course. This study reviews the pathophysiological contributions of obesity and T2D to MASLD and evaluates pharmacologic strategies aimed at these drivers. Incretin-based therapies, especially GLP-1 receptor agonists and co-agonists have emerged as leading agents in promot
