Blink reflex studies were carried out on 51 comatose patients with signs of brain stem impairment due to head injury. Twenty-five patients were studied in acute coma on day 1 or 2 after trauma. Twenty-six patients were studied in prolonged coma during days 3-12 after brain injury. Brain stem involvement was divided clinically and by CT scan into secondary lesions due to supratentorial mass displacement and primary lesions due to direct violence to the brain stem. Perianal electrical stimulation induces reflex activity in the superficial part of the external anal sphincter muscle. Several components of differing latency can be recognised. It is suggested that these correspond with the ripples of contraction observed clinically after perianal scratch stimuli. Some of our earlier studies suggested an erroneously short latency for the first component of this cutaneously-elicited reflex. The reasons for this are discussed.

It has been suggested that hearing level might be assessed by comparing the acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) for two modes of stimulation: by pure tones alone and by a combination of two pure tones, one of which is used as a "preactivator." Using an extrapolatory method for determining the reflex thresholds, 35 subjects (17 normal hearing and 18 hearing impaired) were used to test the above hypothesis. The acoustic reflex threshold and its pattern in response to stimuli of different intensities, were investigated by means of the signal-averaging technique in 20 normal, 20 sensorineural-impaired and 10 successfully stapedectomized ears. The latency and magnitude of the stapedial reflex was examined in a group of normal-hearing Ss (N: 15) and in 15 Ss with unilateral sensorineural impairment exhibiting abnormal loudness growth in the impaired ear. Reflexes were determined at successive 2-db steps from threshold to 16 db above using a 2-kc/s stimulus tone. Latency and magnitude measurements were not statistically different between groups nor between ears within the pathological group. Obtaining a hermetic seal in the external auditory canal is often a major obstacle in impedance audiometry. In the present study, the acoustic reflex threshold was determined for three groups of subjects, first with and then without a pressure-tight seal.
