Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in Southeast Asian refugees arriving in the United States--isolation of enterovirus 70.

During July-September 1980, an epidemic of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) occurred in several refugee camps and transit centers in Southeast Asia. Of 2,356 refugees examined in Bangkok, 200 (8.5%) had conjunctivitis, including 116 (58%) with hemorrhagic signs. Because increasing numbers of refugees were arriving in the United States with conjunctivitis, a program of surveillance and control was implemented. Enterovirus 70, not previously reported from patients in the Western Hemisphere, was cultured from four arriving refugees. A fourfold rise in titer to enterovirus 70 was found in 10…

Invisible wounds: Social victimization, coping strategies, and psychological distress among widowed Syrian refugees in Jordan and Türkiye.

This study investigates how social victimization, coping strategies, and social-structural factors are associated with mental health outcomes among widowed Syrian refugee women in Jordan and Türkiye. Guided by intersectionality and conservation of resources theories, it examines whether discrimination, bullying, profiling, abuse, and coping (problem-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance) are related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depressive symptoms, and general psychological distress and whether these associations differ by host country. A cross-sectional survey was condu

Salivary Metabolomic Signatures Associated with Sex-Specific Psychological Distress in Syrian Refugees: A Proof-of-Principle Study.

BACKGROUND: Refugees arriving from conflict zones often continue to experience trauma and are at increased risk of anxiety and depression. Those seeking asylum form a group at higher risk of suffering adverse mental health outcomes, with higher needs for psychosocial and therapeutic care. This study aimed to determine metabolic changes potentially associated with psychological distress in refugees from Syria, using a saliva-based metabolomics approach via proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. METHODS: Participants were recruited from Lethbridge Family Services and categoriz…

Homestay accommodation as care work: a case study of private accommodation for refugees from Ukraine in Switzerland.

In this paper we conceptualize homestay accommodation as care, through the feminist lens of Joan C. Tronto's seminal works on the subject, based on a qualitative and quantitative survey of Ukrainian refugees in Switzerland. We used Tronto's definition of care as an analytical framework to analyze care providing, giving, and refusing as negotiation processes in the context of unequal power relations between hosts and refugees, but also between civil society and the state. We identified a practical dimension of care, seen through the way hosts take care of the wellbeing of refugees. This form of…

Monitoring and evaluation of community interventions for viral hepatitis among migrants and refugees: a Delphi-based study.

BACKGROUND: Migrants and refugees in Europe carry a disproportionate burden of chronic hepatitis B and C and face barriers accessing health systems. Community-based interventions can improve screening, prevention, and care, yet no framework exists to track their performance. This study aimed to generate a consensus set of indicators for monitoring and evaluating such interventions. METHODS: A scoping review of PubMed from January 2005 to June 2024 identified 70 studies and 275 candidate indicators. After removing redundancies, 38 primary and 17 additional indicators were submitted to a two-ro…

[Post-traumatic stress disorder in refugees and therapeutic interventions based on cognitive behavioral approach: A systematic review].

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is connected with the experience of traumatic events and is significantly related to war and forced displacement. Refugee populations are characterized by a high degree of vulnerability for the development of PTSD, as they are confronted with stressors associated with all three distinct phases of migratory journey. The present article is an attempt to systematic review the therapeutic interventions based on the Cognitive Behavioral Approach and applied to refugees diagnosed with PTSD. For this reason, a review of the international literature was carried ou…

Outcomes from a national screening program for Ukrainian refugees at risk of drug resistant tuberculosis in Wales.

High rates of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Ukraine suggest screening is necessary to mitigate public health hazards for host populations. A pathway was implemented in Wales and data prospectively collected Between 8 April and 21 December 2022. Of 5425 Ukrainian arrivals, notifications were received by TB teams on 2395 (44%) of whom 1955 (82%) were screened. The refugees were young (median age 30, IQR 14-41), and predominantly female (66.1%). Interferon- gamma release assay (IGRA) tests were positive in 112 (6.5%). One Case of active tuberculosis was identified (0.05%). Our data supports Euro…

Community-based diabetes prevention randomized controlled trial in refugees with depression: effects on metabolic outcomes and depression.

Depression and antidepressant medications increase risk for type 2 diabetes. Cambodian-Americans have exceedingly high rates of both depression and diabetes. This paper reports outcomes of a diabetes prevention trial for Cambodian-Americans with depression. Primary outcomes were HbA1c, insulin resistance and depressive symptoms. Participants were aged 35-75, Khmer speaking, at risk for diabetes, and met study criteria for likely depression by either (a) antidepressant medication and/or (b) prolonged elevated depressive symptoms. Participants were randomized to one of three community health wor

Cases of Loiasis Among a Congolese Family: Screening for Loiasis Among Newly Arrived Refugees From Endemic Areas.

Loiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the filarial nematode Loa loa within endemic regions of West and Central Africa. These regions include areas co-endemic for other nematode infections. Although loiasis is rarely seen in the United States (US), primary care providers who regularly see refugees from endemic areas should be aware of its clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, and initial management. Given the challenges of diagnosing loiasis, especially in low prevalence settings, we present cases of four family members, two of whom were diagnosed with loiasis, and discuss an approach…
