Neonatal Resuscitation Practices and Associated Factors Among Nurses in Tanzanian Delivery Suites: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal deaths contribute significantly to under-five mortality, with most deaths seen in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Birth asphyxia is the leading cause of these deaths, but it is preventable with effective resuscitation. In SSA, including Tanzania, inadequate neonatal resuscitation practice by health care providers has been identified as a significant contributor to neonatal mortality. AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aimed to assess the current practice of neonatal resuscitation and the associated factors among nurses located in the delivery suites. METHODOLOGY: A hospital-based cro

Memory deficits in hypertensive ApoE4 mice reversed by P2Y12 inhibition via different mechanisms in males and perimenopausal females.

Apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4) genotype, hypertension, and biological sex are critical risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Yet, their combined impact on early cerebrovascular dysfunction, brain inflammation, and memory impairment remains poorly understood. We developed a translational mouse model incorporating human ApoE4, hypertension via angiotensin II infusion, and induced accelerated ovarian failure (AOF) to mimic perimenopause in females to investigate these interactions. Hypertensive ApoE4 mice of both sexes exhibited impaired spatial working memory, decreased cerebral

Management of Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia: Turkish Modified Delphi-Based Consensus Statement for Special Considerations.

OBJECTIVE: Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an acquired disorder of platelets with a complex and unclear mechanism of increased immune destruction or impaired production of platelets. While the management of ITP is evolving, there is still a need for guidance, particularly in certain circumstances such as pregnancy, emergencies, or patients requiring co-medications. We aimed to determine the tendencies of hematologists in Türkiye in the event of such special considerations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Applying a modified Delphi method, the Turkish National ITP Working Group, founded under

Cognitive impairment and World Trade Centre-related exposures.

On 11 September 2001 the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York was attacked by terrorists, causing the collapse of multiple buildings including the iconic 110-story 'Twin Towers'. Thousands of people died that day from the collapse of the buildings, fires, falling from the buildings, falling debris, or other related accidents. Survivors of the attacks, those who worked in search and rescue during and after the buildings collapsed, and those working in recovery and clean-up operations were exposed to severe psychological stressors. Concurrently, these 'WTC-affected' individuals breathed and inge

Thalamostriatal degeneration contributes to dystonia and cholinergic interneuron dysfunction in a mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant trinucleotide repeat disorder characterized by choreiform movements, dystonia and striatal neuronal loss. Amongst multiple cellular processes, abnormal neurotransmitter signalling and decreased trophic support from glutamatergic cortical afferents are major mechanisms underlying striatal degeneration. Recent work suggests that the thalamostriatal (TS) system, another major source of glutamatergic input, is abnormal in HD although its phenotypical significance is unknown. We hypothesized that TS dysfunction plays an important role in generating

Survey of practitioners handling slow lorises (Primates: Nycticebus): an assessment of the harmful effects of slow loris bites.

Slow lorises (Nycticebus spp.) are one of six venomous mammals, and the only known venomous primate. In the wild envenomation occurs mainly during conspecific competition for mates and territory, but may also be used as an application against parasites or for predator defense. Envenomation in humans is documented, with the most extreme accounts detailing near-fatal anaphylactic shock. From September 2016 - August 2017, we received questionnaire responses from 80 wild animal practitioners working with Nycticebus spp. in zoos, rescue centres and in the wild. We identified 54 practitioners who ha

Monoallelic loss of the imprinted gene Grb10 promotes tumor formation in irradiated Nf1+/- mice.

Imprinted genes are expressed from only one parental allele and heterozygous loss involving the expressed allele is sufficient to produce complete loss of protein expression. Genetic alterations are common in tumorigenesis but the role of imprinted genes in this process is not well understood. In earlier work we mutagenized mice heterozygous for the Neurofibromatosis I tumor suppressor gene (NF1) to model radiotherapy-associated second malignant neoplasms that arise in irradiated NF1 patients. Expression analysis of tumor cell lines established from our mouse models identified Grb10 expression

The role of chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter transcription factor II in the regulation of hepatic fatty acid oxidation and gluconeogenesis in newborn mice.

Chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter transcription factor II (COUP-TFII) is an orphan nuclear receptor involved in the control of numerous functions in various organs (organogenesis, differentiation, metabolic homeostasis, etc.). The aim of the present work was to characterize the regulation and contribution of COUP-TFII in the control of hepatic fatty acid and glucose metabolisms in newborn mice. Our data show that postnatal increase in COUP-TFII mRNA levels is enhanced by glucagon (via cAMP) and PPARα. To characterize COUP-TFII function in the liver of suckling mice, we used a functional (dom

A structure-specific nucleic acid-binding domain conserved among DNA repair proteins.

SMARCAL1, a DNA remodeling protein fundamental to genome integrity during replication, is the only gene associated with the developmental disorder Schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia (SIOD). SMARCAL1-deficient cells show collapsed replication forks, S-phase cell cycle arrest, increased chromosomal breaks, hypersensitivity to genotoxic agents, and chromosomal instability. The SMARCAL1 catalytic domain (SMARCAL1(CD)) is composed of an SNF2-type double-stranded DNA motor ATPase fused to a HARP domain of unknown function. The mechanisms by which SMARCAL1 and other DNA translocases repair replication

Zoonotic infections among employees from Great Smoky Mountains and Rocky Mountain National Parks, 2008-2009.

U.S. National Park Service employees may have prolonged exposure to wildlife and arthropods, placing them at increased risk of infection with endemic zoonoses. To evaluate possible zoonotic risks present at both Great Smoky Mountains (GRSM) and Rocky Mountain (ROMO) National Parks, we assessed park employees for baseline seroprevalence to specific zoonotic pathogens, followed by evaluation of incident infections over a 1-year study period. Park personnel showed evidence of prior infection with a variety of zoonotic agents, including California serogroup bunyaviruses (31.9%), Bartonella hensela

Divergent transcriptomic pathways underlie sex-biased cognitive rescue by developmental GSK3B inhibition in a mouse model of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia frequently exhibit marked sex differences in onset, clinical features, and treatment response. However, the molecular and developmental bases of these differences remain poorly defined. Here, we report a sex-dependent effect of developmental, paralog-selective GSK3B inhibition on working memory (WM) in the Df(16)A+/- mouse model of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), a genetic condition conferring high risk for schizophrenia. Pharmacological inhibition of GSK3B with BRD3731 rescued WM deficits and enhanced prefrontal cortex (PFC)-ventral hipp

Exploring the role of Cav3.2 calcium channels in autism-like cognitive behavior induced by prenatal valproic acid exposure.

Recent findings indicated that CACNA1H mutations may contribute to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by reducing Cav3.2 activity, disrupting neuronal function, and brain development. To explore how Cav3.2 deficiency affects autism-related cognition, we induced autism-like behaviors in wild-type (WT) and Cav3.2 knockout mice (KO) using the prenatal valproic acid model (pre-VPA). We analyzed how cognitive behavior (repetitive behavior, spatial working memory, sociability, social preference, and anxiety) in this model is differentially impacted in WT and Cav3.2 KO mice of different sexes and ages. The second Irish Helicobacter pylori Working Group consensus for the diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in adult patients in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: There has been an increase in resistance to many of the antimicrobials used to treat Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) nationally and internationally. Primary clarithromycin resistance and dual clarithromycin and metronidazole resistance are high in Ireland. These trends call for an evaluation of best-practice management strategies. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to revise the recommendations for the management of H. pylori infection in adult patients in the Irish healthcare setting. METHODS: The Irish H. pylori working group (IHPWG) was established in 2016 and reconv

The Antidepressant-Like Effects of a Clinically Relevant Dose of Ketamine Are Accompanied by Biphasic Alterations in Working Memory in the Wistar Kyoto Rat Model of Depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the leading cause of disability worldwide. The majority of antidepressant drugs require several weeks or months of treatment to demonstrate efficacy and a subset of patients are resistant to such interventions. Ketamine demonstrates rapid and long-lasting antidepressant effects in treatment resistant patients; however, side effects may limit its widespread clinical utility. The pharmaceutical industry is engaged in developing novel rapid-acting antidepressant drugs and the establishment of clinically relevant assays are needed to advance this process. Wistar

Robust and enduring atorvastatin-mediated memory recovery following the 4-vessel occlusion/internal carotid artery model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion in middle-aged rats.

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is a common condition associated with the development and/or worsening of age-related dementia. We previously reported persistent memory loss and neurodegeneration after CCH in middle-aged rats. Statin-mediated neuroprotection has been reported after acute cerebral ischemia. Unknown, however, is whether statins can alleviate the outcome of CCH. The present study investigated whether atorvastatin attenuates the cognitive and neurohistological outcome of CCH. Rats (12–15 months old) were trained in a non-food-rewarded radial maze, and then subjected to CCH. At

Enduring mental health morbidity and social function impairment in world trade center rescue, recovery, and cleanup workers: the psychological dimension of an environmental health disaster.

BACKGROUND: The World Trade Center (WTC) attacks exposed thousands of workers to hazardous environmental conditions and psychological trauma. In 2002, to assess the health of these workers, Congress directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to establish the WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program. This program has established a large cohort of WTC rescue, recovery, and cleanup workers. We previously documented extensive pulmonary dysfunction in this cohort related to toxic environmental exposures. OBJECTIVES: Our objective in this study was to describe mental hea
