We studied histopathologic findings from the retina and optic nerve of a patient with the late-infantile type of galactosialidosis and related them to clinical features of the condition. An 11-year-old girl with poor visual acuity since birth was found to have nearly complete defects of the retinochoroidal tissue in the central areas of both fundi and almost normal peripheral retinas. Her parents were first cousins. At age 24, the patient reported night blindness. An examination showed geographic atrophy of the peripheral retina and stationary macular lesions in both eyes. Her condition appeared to be a rare case of bilateral macular coloboma associated with progressive peripheral retinal atrophy.

The relationships between transient cerebral and retinal ischemic symptoms and brachiocephalic angiographic findings were studied in 464 patients. The arterial abnormalities were more often bilateral than the symptoms suggested. Normal angiographic appearances were common, although abnormal arteries in patients without related symptoms were also common. When stenosis of the carotid system was 75 per cent or more, there was a strong correlation with symptoms.

Light sensitivity of the central and peripheral parts of the human retina has been studied in an hour exposure to broadband noise of 95 dBA intensity and in an after-effect period. The indices of time threshold of dark adaptation and the visual acuity restoration time at reduced brightness were analysed. Four types of response to acoustic stimulus have been revealed. Correlation between the initial levels of the indices and the character of changes of the functions studied has been established.

The reported findings of periphlebitis retinae (PR) at autopsy, in which brain autopsy was also performed, in 2 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are, so far as the authors are aware, the first histological account of this manifestation of the disease.
