The Impact of Social Media Self-Presentation and Anxiety on Ruminative Exploration Among Women Across Diverse Racial and Ethnic Groups.

Background: Ruminative exploration is a maladaptive form of identity development and is related to higher rates of anxiety and depression. Few researchers have examined how the four dimensions of social media self-presentation (breadth, depth, positivity, authenticity) impact ruminative exploration; much of the literature focuses on identity coherence or identity clarity. Furthermore, the social diversification hypothesis supports that social media is used differently across racial/ethnic groups. The current study aimed to understand how social media self-presentation predicted ruminative expl

Rumination mediates associations between microaggressions and sleep quality in Black Americans: the toll of racial microstressors.

Disparities in health outcomes between Black and White Americans are well-documented, including sleep quality, and disparities in sleep may lead to disparities in health over the life course. A meta-model indicates that cognitive processes may underly the connection between race and poor sleep quality, and ultimately, health disparities. That is, there are race-specific stressors that disproportionately affect Black Americans, which are associated with poor health through biological, cognitive, and behavioral mechanisms (e.g., sleep). Among these race-specific stressors is discrimination, whic

Cognitive vulnerabilities amplify the effect of early pubertal timing on interpersonal stress generation during adolescence.

Early pubertal timing has been found to confer risk for the occurrence of interpersonal stressful events during adolescence. However, pre-existing vulnerabilities may exacerbate the effects of early pubertal timing on the occurrence of stressors. Thus, the current study prospectively examined whether cognitive vulnerabilities amplified the effects of early pubertal timing on interpersonal stress generation. In a diverse sample of 310 adolescents (M age = 12.83 years, 55 % female; 53 % African American), early pubertal timing predicted higher levels of interpersonal dependent events among adole

Positive cognitive coping strategies and binge eating in college women.

The current study explored whether specific cognitive coping strategies moderated the relation between global eating disorder symptomatology and binge eating frequency. Global eating disorder symptomatology and cognitive coping strategies (i.e., self-blame, acceptance, rumination, positive refocusing, refocus on planning, positive reappraisal, putting into perspective, catastrophizing, and other-blame) were evaluated in a sample of women who reported engaging in binge eating in the absence of compensatory behaviors (N=419). Moderation analyses indicated that most positive cognitive coping stra

Coping with post-war mental health problems among survivors of violence in Northern Uganda: Findings from the WAYS study.

Cognitive emotion regulation strategies and mental health problems were assessed in a sample of war-affected youth in Northern Uganda. Univariable and multivariable regression models were fitted to assess the influence of CERS on mental health problems. Maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (e.g., rumination) were significantly associated with more mental health problems while adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (e.g., putting into perspective) were associated with reporting fewer symptoms of mental health problems. The youth with significant scores on mental health

Cognitive control of obsessional thoughts.

A defining characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is unsuccessful suppression of unwanted thoughts. Recent evidence of individual differences in ability to control intrusive thoughts may inform our understanding of failures of cognitive control associated with OCD symptomatology. The current study investigated characteristics of cognitive style that are potentially associated with OCD symptoms and may influence response to unwanted thoughts, including perceived ability to control thoughts and tendency to ruminate. Undergraduate students (N=166) completed self-report measures of

Cortical midline structures associated with rumination in women with PTSD.

Elevated rumination, characterized by repetitive, negative self-focused cognition, is common in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and has been shown to predict the onset and maintenance of the disorder. Neuroimaging research has implicated cortical midline brain structures, including the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC), posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and isthmus cingulate (IsthCing), in rumination in healthy and depressed populations. While past research has revealed dysfunction in cortical midline regions in PTSD, no studies have yet investigated the structural and functional n

Emotionally and Cognitively Drained: Longitudinal Associations Between Cognitive Emotion Regulation and Parental Burnout From Between- and Within-Person Perspectives.

Emotion regulation has recently been suggested to predict parental burnout, a prevalent syndrome in parenting. However, a substantial theory-method gap exists, as most studies have relied on cross-sectional data and between-person analyses. In this study, we aimed to illuminate the longitudinal associations between two powerful cognitive emotion regulation strategies-cognitive reappraisal and rumination-and parental burnout from both between- and within-person perspectives. We hypothesised reciprocal relationships between the use of emotion regulation strategies and parental burnout. To fulfil

Cognitive bias modification of inferential flexibility.

This research examines the effects of a cognitive bias modification procedure for facilitating inferential flexibility, on inferences, mood, and state rumination. Participants were presented with training scenarios, followed by two consecutive inferences for each scenario. In the training condition, participants repeatedly practiced shifting from a negative inference to a positive one. But in the control condition, the two inferences were of the same valence and no shifting occurred. The training successfully promoted the intended inferential shift on new scenarios (d = 0.72). Moreover, traine

Shame as a predictor of post-event rumination in social anxiety.

Evidence shows that people with high social anxiety levels ruminate about distressing social events, which contributes to the maintenance of social anxiety symptoms. The present study aimed to explore the role of shame in maintaining post-event rumination (PER) following a negative social event (an impromptu speech with negative feedback) in a student sample (N = 104). Participants reported negative rumination related to the event one day and one week after the speech. PER measured one day after the speech was not associated with social anxiety symptoms and state anxiety. One week later, parti

The Relationship Between Childhood Maltreatment and Insomnia in Depressed Adolescents: The Mediating Role of Rumination.

BACKGROUND: There exists a prevalence of insomnia in depressed adolescents. Childhood maltreatment is a major life event which may intensify its severity. However, studies on the relationship between insomnia and childhood maltreatment and the mediating role of rumination are scarce. METHODS: The study utilized a cross-sectional study design with 88 adolescents diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Childhood maltreatment, rumination, and insomnia were measured by self-reported questionnaires which included Child Psychological Abuse and Neglect Scale, Rumination Response Scale, and Insomni

Eating disorder-specific rumination moderates the association between attentional bias to high-calorie foods and eating disorder symptoms: Evidence from a reliable free-viewing eye-tracking task.

Cognitive theories of eating disorders implicate Attentional Bias (AB) towards food-related information in the development and maintenance of eating disorders. Empirical evidence for this proposal, however, has been inconsistent, and the measures used to examine AB to food-related stimuli typically showed poor reliability. The aim of the current study was twofold. Firstly, we aimed to examine the psychometric properties of a newly devised eye-tracking task for the assessment of AB in the context of eating disorders. Secondly, we examined the role of Eating Disorder-specific (ED-specific) rumin

Rumination and impaired cortisol recovery following a social stressor in adolescent depression.

Response styles theory promotes rumination as a central cognitive construct driving negative mood and depression, and past research suggests that at least part of the mechanism driving rumination's depressogenic effect is through inhibiting the individual's ability to shift attentional focus away from negative environmental stimuli. In the current study, we hypothesized that high trait rumination would be associated with impaired recovery of the body's biological response to psychological stress. In a community sample of depressed (n = 31) and non-depressed (n = 33) adolescents we assessed rum

Psychosocial vulnerabilities to depression after acute coronary syndrome: the pivotal role of rumination in predicting and maintaining depression.

Psychosocial vulnerabilities may predispose individuals to develop depression after a significant life stressor, such as an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aims are (1) to examine the interrelations among vulnerabilities, and their relation with changes in depressive symptoms 3 months after ACS, (2) to prospectively assess whether rumination interacts with other vulnerabilities as a predictor of later depressive symptoms, and (3) to examine how these relations differ between post-ACS patients who meet diagnostic criteria for depression at baseline versus patients who do not. Within 1 week a

Daily stress and worry are additional triggers of symptom fluctuations in individuals living with Long COVID: results from an intensive longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has shown that exertion in physical, cognitive, social, and self-care activities triggers symptom severity in individuals with Long COVID. PURPOSE: The current study aimed to investigate whether daily emotional exertions (stress, worry, rumination) were associated with symptom exacerbation, over and above influences of effortful daily activities, in individuals with Long COVID. METHODS: In total, 376 participants were recruited from UK Long COVID clinics and community settings and completed daily assessments of activity and severity of 8 core symptoms every 3 hour

[General and specific individual post-traumatic stress disorder-related mechanisms among paramedics].

BACKGROUND: Due to the nature of their work, paramedics face an increased risk of developing a post-traumatic stress disorder. The main goal of this research project was to point out specific correlates of post-traumatic stress. The authors decided to approach that issue from the perspective of emotional-cognitive deficits and resources, such as alexithymia, rumination and coping with stress. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors conducted 3 independent research projects in the first half of the year 2017 in the Wielkopolskie voivodship, that included paramedics. In each one of them, they estimat

Emotion malleability beliefs and coping with the college transition.

First-year students navigating the transition to undergraduate life experience an increase in psychopathology, yet some students thrive while others struggle. The current study examined whether first-year students' beliefs about emotion's malleability predicted emotion regulation and mental health during this critical period. First-year college students completed a battery of self-report questionnaires at the beginning and end of the fall semester. Students who held more malleable views of emotion at the semester's onset reported more of a decrease in depression, more of an increase in the use
