Experiencing multiple loss of persons with AIDS: grief and bereavement issues.

Through a case study approach involving seven respondents and intensive personal interviews, the authors explored grief and bereavement issues for survivors experiencing multiple loss of persons with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). A three-stage model of grief including avoidance, confrontation, and reestablishment was used to explore the issues faced by survivors. The compounding factors of this phenomenon include society's unwillingness to validate the gay identity, the intensity of multiple loss, the lack of time between losses, and the subsequent impact on self-identify and sel

Long-term effects on personality development in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Influence of type of treatment.

In a series of 157 patients treated surgically and/or with Milwaukee braces, constituting 83% of the original criterion patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, treated in the Department of Orthopaedics in Gothenburg, Sweden, from 1969 to 1974, a specific psychologic interview was carried out an average of 9 years after treatment. The 92 surgical patients all wore a Milwaukee brace postoperatively for 6-9 months and were gradually weaned over the next year (17 +/- 2 months). The brace-treated patients wore their braces full time for 18 months and part time for another 8 months (26 +/- 3

Psychologic and behavioral disturbance among epileptic children treated with barbiturate anticonvulsants.

From their studies of epileptic children, the authors found that barbiturate anticonvulsants have several unexpected psychologic and behavioral effects. They suggest that clinicians dealing with depression in epileptic patients consider the possibility that barbiturate anticonvulsants may be a contributing factor.

Is stuttering a contraindication to psychotherapy?

This is a case report of a patient who stutters and was treated for problems of self-esteem with focused brief psychotherapy. The literature by and large is against the use of individual psychotherapy for neurotic problems in patients who stutter. The countertransference may account for the unwarranted pessimism in the literature about such patients. In this case the successful resolution of countertransference feelings facilitated the achievement of the goals of therapy. Further reports on such treatment attempts are warranted. Speech therapy may be facilitated by brief focused psychotherapy

Leisure-time physical activity and psychosocial well-being in adolescents after cancer diagnosis.

This preliminary study examined the relationship between leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and psychosocial well-being in 53 adolescents who were previously diagnosed with cancer. Participants completed a mailed, self-administered questionnaire in which they recalled their LTPA (including leisure time exercise and organized sport) at three time points (prediagnosis, treatment, and posttreatment). They also reported their current psychosocial well-being by using measures of depression and self-concept. Examination of the LTPA data revealed four main patterns across the cancer experience tha

Formal Thought Disorder and Self-Disorder: An Empirical Study.

Background: Formal thought disorder was constitutively linked to the original concept of schizophrenia and has since been one of central features supporting its diagnosis. Bleuler considered formal thought disorder as a fundamental symptom of schizophrenia among other fundamental symptoms, including ego disorders. The contemporary concept of self-disorder represents a more developed, nuanced, and systematic approach to disturbances of self-experience than the Bleulerian concept of ego disorders. As fundamental symptoms, on Bleuler's account, are persistently present in every case, an associati

Psychosocial factors and perceived tremor disability in essential tremor.

Growing evidence suggests that patients with essential tremor (ET) show impairment in psychosocial functions and subsequently increasing vulnerability to anxiety. Here we review evidence supporting a positive relationship between self-reported motor disability and psychological symptoms in ET and critically analyze evidence suggesting how psychosocial factors enhance tremor disability in ET. Theories related to motor competency, behavioral conditioning, and social anxiety have been proposed to relate self-concepts to self-reported tremor disability. We review these theories and then propose a

[Comparison of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and chronic backache from the aspect of psychological factors].

36 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 44 patients with chronic low back pain were psychologically tested by the MMPI-201, Self-concept of Invalidism Scale, Impact of Pain on the Patients' Lives Scale, and "Pain Games" Scale. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis show significantly higher values at the depression and hypomania scale, while those with chronic low back pain manifest significantly higher values at the hysteria scale of the MMPI-201. This latter group also manifests significantly higher values at the Self-concept of Invalidism Scale and at the "Pain-Game" Scale.

The real-time interplay between identity, emptiness, and nonsuicidal self-injury ideation: An ecological momentary assessment study in treatment-seeking individuals.

Although research has shown that individuals with identity difficulties are at greater risk of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), less is known about the associations between identity, emptiness, and NSSI ideation in daily life. This study addressed this gap using an ecological momentary assessment design with six daily EMA surveys for 28 days in a treatment-seeking sample of 123 adolescents and adults (mean age = 23.07, SD = 5.32), yielding a total of 14,776 longitudinal assessments (median compliance = 77.4%). Results showed that lower-than-usual momentary identity synthesis and higher-than-usu

Temporal dynamics of perceived self-reliance and psychiatric symptoms in older adults: applying dynamic time warping to longitudinal cohort data.

OBJECTIVES: Contemporary public health and care policies expect that promoting self-reliance can help older adults prevent or recover from morbidity, including psychiatric disorders. We sought to clarify the role of self-reliance dynamics in developing and recovering from psychiatric symptoms throughout the aging process. METHOD: We used dynamic time warping to analyze the temporal ordering of within-person changes in five self-reliance indicators (three self-efficacy dimensions, mastery, self-esteem) and psychiatric symptoms in N = 1968 participants aged 55+ in the Longitudinal Aging Study A

Quality of Life of Children and Adolescents with Epilepsy Compared to Their Healthy Peers: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Epilepsy significantly impacts the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children and adolescents (CaA). This study aimed to assess HRQoL in pediatric epilepsy patients compared to their healthy peers, using both self- and proxy-reports, and to identify specific HRQoL domains affected by epilepsy.A single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted in Munich between October 2021 and June 2023. HRQoL was assessed in 139 patients aged 3 to 17 years with medically diagnosed epilepsy using age-adapted, validated KINDL© questionnaires, completed by the patients and one caregiver. The questionna

Further insight into adolescent personal identity statuses: Differences based on self-esteem, family climate, and family communication.

INTRODUCTION: During adolescence, youngsters are faced with the challenging task of forming an identity. This process can be either supported or hindered by adolescents' family context. The present study used a six-process model of personal identity including the five identity processes described by the dual-cycle model of identity (exploration in breadth, commitment making, exploration in depth, identification with commitment, and ruminative exploration) as well as a sixth identity process of reconsideration of commitment, commonly described in the three-factor model of identity. Real time self-rating of decision certainty by clinicians: a systematic review.

BackgroundWe sought to establish to what extent decision certainty has been measured in real time and whether high or low levels of certainty correlate with clinical outcomes.MethodsOur pre-specified study protocol is published on PROSPERO, CRD42019128112. We identified prospective studies from Medline, Embase and PsycINFO up to February 2019 that measured real time self-rating of the certainty of a medical decision by a clinician.FindingsNine studies were included and all were generally at high risk of bias. Only one study assessed long-term clinical outcomes: patients rated with high diagnos

[Examination of the Young maladaptive schemes in a group of Gamblers Anonymous].

BACKGROUND: Literature of gambling addiction has become widespread in last years. Many studies were written about the vulnerability factors helping the development of addiction, theoretical models, comorbid problems and therapy possibilities. Currently there is no integrated theoretical model that could explain sufficiently the development and maintenance of pathological gambling. The treatment issue is also unresolved. Cognitive psychology is a dynamically developing field of psychology and good results are achieved in gambling treatment with applying cognitive techniques. Jeffrey Young's sch

Beliefs about personal control and self-management in 30-40 year olds living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a collective term for two distinct long term conditions: Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease. There is increasing emphasis on patients taking greater personal control and self-management of this condition, reflecting earlier research into the management of chronic illness. Nurses play a pivotal role in this process, yet how optimal personal control is self-assessed and self-managed in Inflammatory Bowel Disease is poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This study set out to explore beliefs about personal control and self-management of Inflammatory Bowel Di

Interpretation biases in social anxiety: response generation, response selection, and self-appraisals.

Cognitive theories propose that the resolution of ambiguity is related to the maintenance of social anxiety. A sentence completion task was used to examine how individuals high (n=26) and low (n=23) in social anxiety resolve ambiguous social sentences. Individuals were asked to generate as many responses as came to mind for each sentence, and then to endorse the response that best completes the sentence. Total responses, first responses, and endorsed responses were examined separately. Results indicated that high anxious individuals had more negative and anxious responses and fewer positive an

Differences in problems of motivation in different special groups.

In general, children with a range of special needs have below-average motivation and perceived control. We have investigated whether differences exist between the types of problem in different special groups. Theory distinguishes between two types: low motivation and perceived control can be based either on a low perceived contingency, or on a low perceived competence. These two types of problem require different intervention strategies. The development of these types is related to several factors that might vary systematically in different special groups: specific histories of experience of s
