Barriers of attendance to dog rabies static point vaccination clinics in Blantyre, Malawi.

Rabies is a devastating yet preventable disease that causes around 59,000 human deaths annually. Almost all human rabies cases are caused by bites from rabies-infected dogs. A large proportion of these cases occur in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA). Annual vaccination of at least 70% of the dog population is recommended by the World Health Organisation in order to eliminate rabies. However, achieving such high vaccination coverage has proven challenging, especially in low resource settings. Despite being logistically and economically more feasible than door-to-door approaches, static point (SP) vacci

Determination of antimicrobial use in commercial poultry farms in Plateau and Oyo States, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Indiscriminate use of antimicrobials for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection in animals is a common practice in Nigeria as in other developing countries. These antimicrobials are purchased over the counter without restrictions and often administered in form of medicated feedstuffs. In Nigeria, like most developing countries, antimicrobial prescription data are not routinely collected or reported at the farm level, instead import data are used in reporting antimicrobial consumption. Farmers can be useful sources of data on the use of antimicrobial agents by class, an

Multiple birth in Austrian Holsteins: genetic parameters and impacts on calving, health, fertility, and milk production traits.

Multiple birth (MB) is associated with adverse effects on cow fertility and calf survival, thereby contributing to economic losses for dairy farmers; however, it is not currently included in routine genetic evaluations or selection indices in cattle worldwide. This study aimed to (i) estimate the h2 and repeatability of MB, (ii) assess its genetic and phenotypic associations with calving performance, postpartum health, fertility, and milk production traits, and (iii) quantify its impact on these traits in Austrian Holstein population. After data editing, the analyses used 678,877 records belon

Animal welfare outcomes and associated risk indicators on Austrian dairy farms: A cross-sectional study.

In 2017, an Austrian dairy company implemented a third-party animal-based assessment of health and welfare to stimulate welfare improvements on farms. Using this cross-sectional data set, we aimed at identifying prevailing welfare problems and associations thereof with main farm and management characteristics. Welfare outcome measures regarding body condition, cleanliness, diarrhea, integument alterations, claw condition, lameness, rising behavior, and avoidance distance toward humans were assessed by 13 trained observers. Data from health recordings and farm characteristics, such as housing s

The Health Impact of Rabies in Haiti and Recent Developments on the Path Toward Elimination, 2010-2015.

Haiti, a Caribbean country of 10.5 million people, is estimated to have the highest burden of canine-mediated human rabies deaths in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the highest rates of human rabies deaths in the world. Haiti is also the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and has numerous economic and health priorities that compete for rabies-control resources. As a result, primary rabies-control actions, including canine vaccination programs, surveillance systems for human and animal rabies, and appropriate postbite treatment, have not been fully implemented at a national scale. Absence of phlebotominae sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) and allochthonous canine leishmaniasis cases in the Santa Catarina Plateau, Brazil.

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by Leishmania spp., transmitted to hosts through the bite of female phlebotomine sandflies, with domestic dogs serving as reservoirs for the disease. Understanding the entomofauna is crucial for effective control of vector-borne diseases, such as leishmaniasis, because various environmental and climatic factors can influence sandfly presence and distribution. This study aimed to conduct a quantitative and qualitative survey of the entomofauna in urban and peri-urban areas of Lages, Santa Catarina, Brazil, and to analyze documented cases of canine lei

A New Tool to Assess the Economic Impact of Q Fever on Dairy Cattle Farms.

To support farmers in their decisions related to Q fever, a dedicated economic assessment tool is developed. The present work describes the calculator, its economic rationale, and the supporting assumptions. The calculator integrates a yearly compartmental model to represent population dynamism and the main interactions between disorders linked to Q fever, especially reproductive disorders (abortion, retained foetal membranes, purulent vaginal discharge and endometritis, extra services, and calving-conception delays). The effects of the nontangible cost of the disease on human health, the welf

Applying the principles of isotope analysis in plant and animal ecology to forensic science in the Americas.

The heart of forensic science is application of the scientific method and analytical approaches to answer questions central to solving a crime: Who, What, When, Where, and How. Forensic practitioners use fundamentals of chemistry and physics to examine evidence and infer its origin. In this regard, ecological researchers have had a significant impact on forensic science through the development and application of a specialized measurement technique-isotope analysis-for examining evidence. Here, we review the utility of isotope analysis in forensic settings from an ecological perspective, concen

Chemoprophylaxis and treatment of African canine trypanosomosis in French military working dogs: a retrospective study.

African trypanosomosis is a major threat to livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa. Although the disease mainly concerns cattle, dogs can also be infected by Trypanosoma spp. transmitted by tsetse flies. Between 1997 and 2003, the parasite Trypanosoma congolense was identified in French military dogs sent to Africa. On infected dogs, the diagnosis was made during the mission or just after the return to France, depending on when the symptoms appeared. The high incidence and mortality rate among these dogs led veterinarians of the French Health Service to implement a systematic chemoprophyla

A GHS-consistent approach to health hazard classification of petroleum substances, a class of UVCB substances.

The process streams refined from petroleum crude oil for use in petroleum products are among those designated by USEPA as UVCB substances (unknown or variable composition, complex reaction products and biological materials). They are identified on global chemical inventories with unique Chemical Abstract Services (CAS) numbers and names. The chemical complexity of most petroleum substances presents challenges when evaluating their hazards and can result in differing evaluations due to the varying level of hazardous constituents and differences in national chemical control regulations.
