More Than Meets the Eye: Unraveling the Interactions Between Skin Microbiota and Habitat in an Opportunistic Amphibian.

With amphibians still holding the record as the most threatened class of terrestrial vertebrates, their skin microbiota has been shown to play a relevant role in their survival in a fast-changing world. Yet little is known about how abiotic factors associated with different aquatic habitats impact these skin microorganisms. Here we chose the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata), a small anuran that colonizes a wide range of wetland habitats, to investigate how the diversity and composition of both its bacterial and fungal skin communities vary across different habitats and with water charac

The effects of floor temperature, supplemental heat and drying at birth on neonatal swine.

The objective was to determine the effects of floor temperature (20 or 30 C), supplemental heat (heat lamp or light bulb) and drying at birth on piglet survival to day 5. Rectal and infrared skin temperatures were taken on 326 piglets for the first 8 hr postpartum. Blood samples were obtained at birth, day 2 and day 5 and analyzed for thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and cortisol by radioimmunoassay. Weight of each pig was recorded at birth and on days 1, 2, and 5. Survival rates were monitored daily. It was postulated that piglets not dried at birth might have increased heat conservation…

The cross-sectional relationships among hyperthermia-induced hyperventilation, peak oxygen consumption, and the cutaneous vasodilatory response during exercise.

To test the hypothesis that the hyperthermia-induced ventilatory response relates to aerobic power and/or the cutaneous vasodilatory response during exercise, we asked 18 subjects to perform 3 kinds of exercise: an incremental exercise to determine peak oxygen consumption (V(O)(2peak)), a steady state exercise at 50% of V(O)(2peak) to determine the ventilatory response to increasing body temperature, and a steady state exercise at 60% of V(O)(2peak) to determine the cutaneous vasodilatory response to increasing body temperature. The ventilatory and cutaneous vasodilatory responses were evaluat

Thermal effects of emollients on facial skin in the cold.

Ointments are traditionally used in Finland for protection against facial frostbite. Recent epidemiological reports showed unexpectedly, however, that the use of ointments is a statistically considerable risk factor for frostbite of the face and ears. The effects of 4 different emollients on facial temperature were studied in 46 acute cold exposures. The voluntary test persons sat in a cold chamber after emollients were applied thickly on half of the face, while the other half acted as an untreated control. Thermistors and an infrared scanner were used to measure skin temperature of symmetrica…

Regional body composition and human core temperature responses to mild temperature water immersion in adults.

This project studied the effects of regional body composition on the core temperature responses to water immersion. Forty-six volunteers participated in the study, with subgroups of eighteen immersed from the neck down in 18, 22, and 26°C water for up to 10 h, respectively. Regional body composition was measured by Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry. Rectal temperature (Tc), and 10-site mean skin temperatures (Tsk) were measured every minute. Immersion durations ranged from 0.83 to 10 h, and Tc ranged from 35.2 to 38.0°C at the end of immersion. Tc cooling rates were calculated over the first 0.…

In-Play Cooling Interventions for Simulated Match-Play Tennis in Hot/Humid Conditions.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of different in-play cooling strategies for mitigating heat strain during simulated tennis match-play activity in a hot/humid environment representing the most extreme conditions during the US Open (36°C, 50% relative humidity). METHODS: On three occasions, nine males completed an intermittent treadmill protocol with an exercise intensity and activity profile simulating a four-set tennis match, with 90-s breaks between odd-numbered games and 120-s breaks between sets, according to International Tennis Federation rules. During breaks, 1) the cur

Dissecting the factors shaping fish skin microbiomes in a heterogeneous inland water system.

BACKGROUND: Fish skin microbiomes are rarely studied in inland water systems, in spite of their importance for fish health and ecology. This is mainly because fish species distribution often covaries with other biotic and abiotic factors, complicating the study design. We tackled this issue in the northern part of the Jordan River system, in which a few fish species geographically overlap, across steep gradients of water temperature and salinity. RESULTS: Using 16S rRNA metabarcoding, we studied the water properties that shape the skin bacterial communities, and their interaction with fish ta

Influence of heat stress on exercise-induced changes in regional blood flow in sheep.

Radioactive microspheres were used to measure cardiac output and blood flow to most major tissues in sheep at rest and during treadmill exercise (3- to 6-fold increase in metabolic rate for 30 min) in thermoneutral (TN) [dry bulb temperature (Tdb) = 16 degrees C, wet bulb temperature (Twb) = 12 degrees C] and mildly hot (MH) (Tdb = 40 degrees C, Twb = 23 degrees C) environments. During exercise, rectal temperature increased more under MH than under TN conditions; exercise-induced changes in the major central cardiovascular parameters were unaffected by MH. Exercise in TN caused mild hypocapnia

Thermal imaging: A potential tool for early detection of tail lesions in pigs?

Tail biting in pigs is a serious problem both from an animal welfare and an economic perspective. Once the behaviour starts, it is important to identify it and intervene immediately to restrict the spread and risk of secondary problems, such as infections. In this study, we tested whether thermal camera imaging could be used as an aid for early detection of tail biting. We also assessed links between skin temperature, tail health and saliva biomarkers for stress and inflammation. Bitten tails were slightly warmer based on thermal imaging than non-lesioned tails. However, the difference was not…

Measurement of Airborne Ultrasound Focus on Skin Surface Using Thermal Imaging.

In recent years, tactile presentation technology using airborne ultrasound has attracted attention. To achieve an ideal tactile presentation using ultrasound, the acoustic field on the user's skin surface must be determined, particularly the location of the focal point. Previous studies have suggested that thermal images can be used to immediately visualize sound pressure patterns on finger surfaces. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the performance of thermal imaging for measuring the ultrasound focus on the skin. First, we confirmed that the sound pressure peak at the focus and

Delivery of Thermoresponsive-Tailored Mixed Micellar Nanogel of Lidocaine and Prilocaine with Improved Dermatokinetic Profile and Therapeutic Efficacy in Topical Anaesthesia.

The topical delivery of local anaesthetics has always been a difficult task due to the limited percutaneous absorption of local anaesthetic drugs across the various barriers of the skin. In this pursuit, a thermoresponsive mixed micellar nanogel (MMNG) system of lidocaine and prilocaine has been attempted in the current piece of work. The system relies on the ability to alter its phase state (sol-to-gel) for feasibility of the topical application in response to change in temperature. The composition of MMNG entails majorly of Pluronic® F127 and Tween 80 in a fixed combination so as to provide

Transparent Film Dressing Versus Microporous Paper Tape for Temperature Probe Fixation in Preterm Neonates: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the incidence and severity of skin damage associated with transparent film dressing and microporous paper tape used for temperature probe fixation in preterm neonates. METHODS: Preterm neonates requiring radiant warmer care were randomized to receive either transparent film dressing or microporous paper tape for temperature probe fixation. Skin integrity at the probe site was assessed using the Neonatal Skin Condition Score (NSCS), which evaluated dryness, erythema, and breakdown. The primary outcome was the proportion of neonates with any skin damage, defined as an incr
