OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility and clinical value of the endoscopic operations around the skull base.

We report two cases of solitary plasmacytoma of the skull, a very unusual presentation and location of this tumor. There seems to be no difference in prognosis between the tumor originating from the skull (osseous form) and from the dura mater (non-osseous form), differently from the data of other parts of the body. The risk of secondary multiple myeloma appears to be low but the mean follow-up is too short for any conclusion on this point.

Chondrosarcomas of the skull base are indolent, locally invasive tumors with a marked tendency to recur. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment because these tumors are generally resistant to other forms of treatment. A surgical approach with wide access to the skull base and one that is easily repeatable is required, because recurrence is common. Congenital absence of one or both internal carotid arteries (ICAs) has a high association with circle of Willis aneurysm formation. Three dimensional computed tomography was performed in 150 children suffering from a bone lesion of the base of the skull and face. These lesions were either malformative, neoplastic, infectious or traumatic. 3D CT provided an essential anatomical approach to the lesions facilitating the choice of the most appropriate treatment. 3D CT is also indicated in the follow-up of these operated children, particularly of the growth of the operated bone segment and its relations with adjacent structures.

In recent literature the question of the convenience of neurosurgical treatment of cranial depressed fracture of the newborn has been a subject of discussion. The authors review their experience with 4 cases of this condition, that stress the necessity of the operation. Most reported series have dealt with the short-term results of the different ways of treatment. In this article the outcome is evaluated at least 10 years after surgery.

Ten patients with a normal nasopharynx and 36 patients with pathology of the nasopharynx or skull base were studied with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Four millimeter thick axial, coronal, and often sagittal scans were obtained using SE 500/28 and SE 2000/56 pulse sequences. The normal scans were compared with cadaver cryosections.
