Developmental changes in the sleep electroencephalogram of adolescent boys and girls.

The sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) changes across adolescence; however, there are conflicting data as to whether EEG changes are regionally specific, are evident in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and whether there are sex differences. The present study seeks to resolve some of these issues in a combined cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of sleep EEG in adolescents. Thirty-three healthy adolescents (18 boys, 15 girls; 11-14 years) were studied on two occasions 6-8 months apart. Cross-sectional analysis of data from the initial visit revealed signific

The nightly use of sodium oxybate is associated with a reduction in nocturnal sleep disruption: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in patients with narcolepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To further explore the effects of sodium oxybate (SXB) administration on nocturnal sleep in narcolepsy patients during a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group study conducted with 228 adult patients with narcolepsy/cataplexy in the United States, Canada, and Europe. METHOD: Patients were withdrawn from antidepressants and sedative/hypnotics, and then randomized to receive 4.5, 6, or 9 g SXB or placebo nightly for 8 weeks. Patients receiving 6 and 9 g/night doses were titrated to their final dose in weekly 1.5 g increments, while patients receiving placebo were randomized

Medical complaints are more common in young school-aged children with parent reported insomnia symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Studies in adults have found significant association between sleep disturbances and various medical symptoms/disorders. However, in children, few studies have explored this complex association in clinical samples. In this study, we examined prevalence of medical complaints in children with insomnia symptoms in a large general population of school aged children. METHODS: We conducted a cross sectional study of 700 children, ages 5-12 years, from the Penn State Children's Cohort. All children underwent a medical and psychiatric history, physical examination, 9-h overnight polysomnogr

Recovery sleep after sleep deprivation almost completely abolishes dream recall.

The study investigated the effect of one night of sleep deprivation on dream recall at morning awakening after recovery sleep. Forty healthy subjects were studied after adaptation (A) and baseline nights (B), and a recovery (R) night following 40 h of prolonged wakefulness. Parallel to the well-known recovery sleep changes (slow-wave sleep--SWS--rebound, decreased number of awakenings and of REM sleep amount), an almost complete abolition of dream recall was found, with an around 75% decrease with respect to the adaptation and baseline nights. The number of dreams recalled by those subjects wi

Handedness leads to interhemispheric EEG asymmetry during sleep in the rat.

Sleep electroencephalographic (EEG) slow-wave activity is increased after wakefulness and decreases during sleep. Regional sleep EEG differences are thought to be a consequence of activation of specific cortical neuronal circuits during waking. We investigated the relationship between handedness and interhemispheric brain asymmetry. Bilateral EEG recordings were obtained from the frontal and occipital cortex in rats with a clear paw preference in a food-reaching task (right, n = 5; left, n = 5). While still naïve to the task, no waking or sleep EEG asymmetry was present. During the food-reachi

Eight years follow-up of a generalized epilepsy patient with eating-induced late-onset epileptic spasms and atypical absence with myoclonic jerks.

PURPOSE: Eating epilepsy was previously known as a kind of focal reflex epilepsy. However, the development of eating-induced multiple generalized seizures and the associated EEG changes were rarely reported. Herein, we present a 13-year-old generalized epilepsy patient with eating-induced generalized seizures since the age of 5. CASE PRESENTATION: The 13-year-old male patient had suffered from late-onset eating-induced epileptic spasms during the meal since the age of 5. Meanwhile, he also experienced spontaneous epileptic spasms during the period of sleep. The seizure frequency and type grad

Sleep duration and quality in heart failure patients.

PURPOSE: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent in patients with heart failure and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HF-REF). SDB is classified as predominant obstructive (OSA) or central (CSA) and may alter sleep duration, sleep quality, and quality of life. This study describes sleep quality and duration in well-characterized cohorts of these patients. METHODS: Two hundred fifty consecutive patients with HF-REF (NYHA class ≥II, ejection fraction ≤45%) underwent cardiac and pulmonary examination, plus full attended in-hospital overnight polysomnography (PSG). PSG reco

Progressive sleep and electroencephalogram changes in mice carrying the Huntington's disease mutation.

Sleep disturbances in Huntington's disease may be deleterious to the cognitive performance, affective behaviour, and general well-being of patients, but a comprehensive description of the progression of changes in sleep and electroencephalogram in Huntington's disease has never been conducted. Here we studied sleep and electroencephalogram disturbances in a transgenic mouse model of Huntington's disease (R6/2 mice). We implanted 10 R6/2 mice and five wild-type littermates with electromyography electrodes, frontofrontal and frontoparietal electroencephalogram electrodes and then recorded sleep/

[Maintenance of the relation between the pulsed secretion of hormones and the internal sleep structure in human African trypanosomiasis].

In order to determine whether sleep disturbances would affect the hormonal patterns and the normal relationships between hormone pulses and sleep stages, the 24-hour profiles of cortisol, prolactin and plasma renin activity (PRA) were analysed in 6 sleeping sickness patients studied at Brazzaville and in 5 healthy African controls studied in Abidjan. Polysomnographic recordings were done continuously and blood was taken every 10 minutes throughout the 24-hour period. Plasma was analyzed for cortisol, prolactin and PRA. The circadian rhythm of cortisol, considered as an example of an endogenous

A high-density electroencephalography study reveals abnormal sleep homeostasis in patients with rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by disrupting motor enactments during REM sleep, but also cognitive impairments across several domains. In addition to REM sleep abnormalities, we hypothesized that RBD patients may also display EEG abnormalities during NREM sleep. We collected all-night recordings with 256-channel high-density EEG in nine RBD patients, predominantly early-onset medicated individuals, nine sex- and age- matched healthy controls, and nine additional controls with matched medications and comorbidities. Power spectra in delta to gamma frequen

Levofloxacin-containing second-line anti-Helicobacter pylori eradication in Taiwanese real-world practice.

Sedative antidepressants are commonly used drugs in the treatment of insomnia. However, some recommendations claim that only hypnotics have been proven effective in the treatment of sleep initiation and maintenance disorders. The aim of this article is to compare the effect of hypnotics and trazodone on sleep, and to analyse the evidence for the use of trazodone in the treatment of insomnia. Three studies investigated the effects of trazodone on sleep in primary insomnia, 5 studies on insomnia in the course of affective disorders and 6 studies on insomnia in other indications (PTSD, Alzheimer'

Sleep and body temperature in TNFα knockout mice: The effects of sleep deprivation, β3-AR stimulation and exogenous TNFα.

Increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines is assumed to mediate increased sleep under inflammatory conditions, such as systemic infections or recovery from sleep loss. The role of cytokines in sleep regulation under normal conditions is less clear. In the present study, we investigated the role of endogenous tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) in sleep regulation using TNFα knockout (KO) mice. Under control conditions at thermoneutral ambient temperature, total sleep time did not differ between TNFα KO and wild-type (WT) mice, but TNFα KO mice had increased rapid-eye-movement sleep (RE

Sleep disruption in systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) patients: clinical and polysomnographic findings.

BACKGROUND: Progressive systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disease characterized by endothelial lesions and fibrosis of the skin and other organs. Patients' quality of life and life expectancy are determined by the intensity of pulmonary, esophageal, cardiac, and renal involvement. Neurological involvement was considered to be rare, but increasing evidence indicates that peripheral and autonomic neuropathies commonly occur. Conditions seen with SSc, such as pulmonary fibrosis and gastro-esophageal reflux, have the potential to affect sleep. No systematic assessment of sleep-relate

[Qualitative and quantitative EEG-findings in schizophrenia (author's transl)].

The results of the qualitative but particularly the quantitative EEG-studies indicate that 1. The EEG of adult schizophrenics is characterized by an appearance of excessive fast activity along with some slow waves and the lack of alpha-activity. 2. Excessive fast activity and lack of alpha-waves have also been found in the EEGs of psychotic children and most interestingly in children whose parents (particularly the mother) are schizophrenic (high risk children). 3. Based on the studies during sleep and investigations with neuroleptics, it was established that the origin of the excess fast acti

[Sleep-disordered breathing in older adults: clinical features and effects on the nervous system and mental health].

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by upper airway collapse, intermittent hypoxemia, intrathoracic pressure fluctuations, and sleep fragmentation. In older adults, the clinical presentation and consequences of OSA differ from those observed in middle-aged individuals, necessitating age-specific management strategies. This review discusses age-related aspects of OSA epidemiology and pathophysiology, as well as associations with neurological and psychiatric outcomes in later life. Evidence demonstrates that OSA prevalence increases with ag

Class-specific and cumulative effects of psychotropic medication on sleep architecture: a polysomnographic retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the impact of psychotropic medication interactions on sleep architecture. With the growing use of psychotropics, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers, this research seeks to understand how these drugs and their cumulative burden may affect key sleep parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 60 non-psychotropic medication users, as well as 61 psychotropic medication users who underwent hospital polysomnography and met all inclusion criteria. Sociodemographic and polysomnographic data were obtained fr

Sleep Architecture Relates to Daytime Affect and Somatic Complaints in Clinically Anxious but Not Healthy Children.

It is increasingly clear that seminal sleep-affective relationships begin to take root in childhood, yet studies exploring how nighttime sleep characteristics relate to daytime affective symptoms, both in clinical and healthy populations of children, are lacking. The current study sought to explore these relationships by investigating whether trait-like and/or daily reports of affective and somatic symptoms of children with generalized anxiety disorder and matched controls relate to sleep architecture. Sixty-six children (ages 7-11; 54.4% female; 56.1% Caucasian; 18.2% biracial; 6.1% African A

Improvement of sleep and pituitary-adrenal inhibition after subchronic intranasal vasopressin treatment in elderly humans.

Subchronic intranasal treatment with argininevasopressin (AVP) has been shown to exert a strong ameliorating effect on sleep and slow wave sleep (SWS) deficits in elderly. However, AVP is also a potent stimulus of the pituitary-adrenal stress system, which is usually inhibited during early, SWS-rich sleep. A disinhibition of pituitary-adrenal activity during sleep is correlated with aging and is considered a pathologic factor contributing to various age-related diseases. Here, we examined whether the beneficial effect of prolonged intranasal AVP administration on sleep in aged would be associa

Sleep endocrine effects of the 11-beta-hydroxysteroiddehydrogenase inhibitor metyrapone.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Besides regulating hormone secretion, steroids also modulate sleep architecture in specific ways. To simulate a state of altered glucocorticoid- and mineralocorticoid-receptor occupation, we administered metyrapone, an 11-beta-hydroxylase inhibitor, that blocks adrenal cortisol synthesis and inhibits the 11-beta-hydroxysteroiddehydrogenase type-1 enzyme in the central nervous system and investigated endocrine changes and the sleep electroencephalogram. DESIGN: Each volunteer spent 4 nights in the sleep laboratory, the first of which served to habituate the subject to the con
