Mindfulness-based interventions to promote improved sleep quality in older adults.

Sleep quality is a crucial indicator of overall health of older adults, who are vulnerable to sleep-related complications such as increased risk for anxiety, dementia, and falls. Sleep disturbances are common in this population and can be exacerbated by comorbidities, including chronic pain and depression. This article explores the research around mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), which have gained attention as a nonpharmacologic approach to improving sleep quality. MBIs, including mindfulness-based stress reduction, mindfulness-based therapy for insomnia, and mindfulness-based exercises

Objective and subjective measurement of sleep in people who use substances: Emerging evidence and recommendations from a systematic review.

People who use substances commonly experience sleep disruptions, affecting the regulation of physical and mental health, and presenting a significant barrier to treatment success. Sleep impairments are noted in all phases of substance use; however, differences between subjective versus objective methods used to measure sleep quality have been reported. While polysomnography is the gold-standard for sleep measurement, recent advances in actigraphy may help address the discordance between subjective and objective sleep reports. This systematic review examined emerging evidence (2016-present) for

Sleep in Young People With Features of Borderline Personality Disorder: A Scoping Review.

Sleep disturbance is commonly reported in young people with features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Examining sleep quality and sleep-wake patterns in young people with features of BPD is essential to inform the development of sleep-improvement interventions. A scoping review was conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The objectives were to map the literature regarding sleep in young people with features of BPD, highlight areas for further investigation, and provide methodological recommendations for future research. Seven data sets were included in the revi

Poor sleep correlates with biomarkers of neurodegeneration in mild traumatic brain injury patients: a CENC study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep disorders affect over half of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) patients. Despite evidence linking sleep and neurodegeneration, longitudinal TBI-related dementia studies have not considered sleep. We hypothesized that poor sleepers with mTBI would have elevated markers of neurodegeneration and lower cognitive function compared to mTBI good sleepers and controls. Our objective was to compare biomarkers of neurodegeneration and cognitive function with sleep quality in warfighters with chronic mTBI. METHODS: In an observational warfighters cohort (n = 138 mTBI, 44 contro

Sleep disorders in children with asthma.

Asthma and sleep disorders are both common in childhood, and often co-exist in the same child. Moreover, studies have shown that in many children the rate of one is influenced by the other. Sleep disorders can be classified into six different groups-insomnia, hypersomnia, parasomnia, movement disorders, circadian disorders, and sleep-related breathing disorders. Children with asthma often present with complaints of insomnia with poor sleep quality, difficulty falling asleep and sleep disruptions. These complains are often associated with asthma control. They may also complain of daytime sleepi

Obesity and sleep disturbances: The "chicken or the egg" question.

Obesity and sleep disturbances are common conditions in modern societies and accumulating evidence support a close bidirectional causal relationship between these two conditions. Indeed, from one side sleep loss seems to affect energy intake and expenditure through its direct effects on hormone-mediated sensations of satiety and hunger and through the influence on hedonic and psychological aspects of food consumption. Sleep deprived patients have been shown to experiment excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and tiredness that, in a vicious circle, enhances physical inactivity and weight gain

Fatigue correlates with sleep disturbances in Parkinson disease.

BACKGROUND: Many Parkinson disease (PD) patients complain about chronic fatigue and sleep disturbances during the night. The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between fatigue and sleep disturbances by using polysomnography (PSG) in PD patients. METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-two PD patients (152 with mild fatigue and 80 with severe fatigue) were recruited in this study. Demographic information and clinical symptoms were collected. Fatigue severity scale (FSS) was applied to evaluate the severity of fatigue, and PSG was conducted in all PD patients. FSS ≥4 was defined a

Targeting the Orexin System in the Pharmacological Management of Insomnia and Other Diseases: Suvorexant, Lemborexant, Daridorexant, and Novel Experimental Agents.

The orexin (hypocretin) system plays a central role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle through two neuropeptides, orexin-A and orexin-B, which act on OX1R and OX2R receptors. Emerging evidence links heightened orexin signaling with the pathophysiology of chronic insomnia. This review outlines the neurobiology of the orexinergic system, compares the pharmacological profile of dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs) to traditional GABAergic hypnotics, and evaluates the clinical efficacy and safety of Suvorexant, Lemborexant, and Daridorexant. DORAs function by selectively dampening orexin-drive

More Than Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder: Sleep Differences in Parkinson's Disease LRRK2 and GBA Genotypes.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep disorders can significantly worsen the quality of life in Parkinson's disease (PD). Variants in LRRK2 and GBA1, the most common genetic contributors to PD, may lead to different clinical features, including more REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in PD associated with GBA1 mutations (GBA PD). However, there is a dearth of information about differences in non-RBD sleep disorders among these genetic subgroups. METHODS: Seventy-nine participants with PD (18 LRRK2 G2019S carriers with PD [LRRK2 PD], 22 GBA1 [GBA PD], 2 LRRK2 GBA PD and 37 idiopathic PD [iPD]) underwent actigraphy

[Dementia and Sleep: A Bidirectional Relationship].

Sleep-waking is regulated by numerous sleep- and wake-promoting nuclei in the brain and biological clocks (suprachiasmatic nucleus). In dementia, organic damage occurs in the brainstem, hypothalamus, and thalamus, where these nuclei and their neural projections are concentrated, resulting in severe insomnia, hypersomnia, and irregular sleep-wake patterns. Numerous cohort studies have strongly suggested that sleep disturbances, such as impaired sleep quality and hypersomnia, may serve as early indicators or risk factors for the onset of dementia. Until recently, the neuropathological mechanisms

Industrialization Effect on Sleep and Sleep in Preindustrial Societies.

Everything that happens during wakefulness impacts sleep, and vice versa. Human behavior responds to the environment. With the advent of industrialization, various harmful systems have emerged that affect sleep quality, including artificial light, electronic devices, noise, inadequate eating habits, rotating work shifts, stress, sedentary behavior, multitasking, and information overload. Paradoxically, we owe some advances in sleep medicine to the use of electrical energy and digitization. This article analyzes these topics and addresses sleep in societies currently considered preindustrialize

"To die, to sleep": A systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between death anxiety and sleep.

Poor sleep has long been established as both a symptom and cause of psychopathology. Similarly, death anxiety has attracted growing attention for its transdiagnostic role in mental illnesses, particularly anxiety-related disorders. However, the relationship between death anxiety and sleep has not been systematically explored. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the relationship between sleep and death anxiety. In total, 15 studies were included in this review, representing a total sample size of 2786 participants. A review of these studies revealed that death anxiety was signific

Associations between metabolic disorders and sleep disturbance in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance plays a crucial role in mental illness and metabolic dysregulation. However, the clinical correlates of metabolic disorders (MD, only meeting 1 or 2 metabolic syndrome standards) and its relationship to sleep disturbance in patients with schizophrenia are uncertain. The study was to illuminate the association between MD and sleep disturbance in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-four patients with schizophrenia (157 drug-naive and 7 drug-free) were classified into 2 groups: MD and non-MD. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the

Near-Death Experiences and Sleep Disturbance: An Exploratory Study Using Wrist Actigraphy.

Near-death experiences (NDEs) are nonordinary states of consciousness typically occurring on the brink of death. Sleep changes after NDEs have been described, including shorter sleep duration, longer sleep latency, and more sleep disturbances; however, objective verification is lacking. In this exploratory research, 57 participants took part in a 14-day actigraphy study and were assigned to three groups: those who have had an NDE ( n = 26); those who experienced a near-death event but without NDE ( n = 12); and those who had never come close to death ( n = 19). No significant differences were

The interplay between sleep and gut microbiota.

Sleep is a universal physiological need in all species and is essential for the maintenance and recovery of various physiological functions of the body. In late years, the gut microbiota (GM), a vast and extraordinarily complex ecosystem located in human gastrointestinal tract that oversees an array of critical bodily functions, has become a popular focus among researchers. Accumulated evidences in this field have revealed that it exerts important roles in the regulation of some biological characteristics, especially metabolic, immunological and neurobehavioral functions.
