BACKGROUND: To investigate the long-term stability and possible cataractogenesis after femtosecond laser treatment of the crystalline lens.
METHODS: The crystalline lenses of ten Göttingen minipigs® underwent femtosecond laser treatment. During a subsequent 1-year follow-up, the pigs were monitored by means of slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment and Scheimpflug imaging of the lens.
RESULTS: No laser-induced cataractogenesis was observed during the 1-year follow-up. The laser pattern showed a stable appearance under all examination devices.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis.
METHODS: A 3-year-old girl presented with watering in the right eye for 3 days. Slit-lamp examination showed an epithelial defect and hypopyon in the right eye and a corneal scar with thinning and vascularization in the left eye. There was bilateral reduced corneal sensation and evidence of self-mutilated lips and fingers.
RESULTS: Neurological manifestations along with ocular features confirmed the diagnosis of congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis.

We report a case of an elastic cord-related ocular injury, to increase the public's awareness of the seriousness of this type of injury. A 43-year-old Chinese postman presented with decreased visual acuity in the left eye after being hit by an elastic cord at work. Ectopic cilium was diagnosed by slit-lamp biomicroscopy and treated surgically by transconjunctival excision in seven adult horses. All cases presented with a common history of blepharospasm, ocular discharge and keratitis. Ophthalmic examination revealed a single translucent cilium in the upper eyelid palpebral conjunctiva, emerging approximately 5 mm from the eyelid margin. PURPOSE: To report a rare case of true exfoliation of the lens capsule following panuveitis, with slit-lamp photographs before and following the development of the true exfoliation.
METHODS: Case report. Review of the history and clinical features of a 70-year-old woman who developed true exfoliation during the treatment for panuveitis.
RESULTS: After 7 months of treatment for bilateral panuveitis with topical steroid and tropicamide, the patient developed a thin, transparent membrane arising on the lens surface in the right eye. A diagnosis of true exfoliation of the lens capsule was made.

Ninety patients with aphakia and diabetes were examined. Intraocular pressure was normal in 30 patients, in 30 aphakia was concomitant with primary glaucoma, and 30 presented with aphakic glaucoma. PURPOSE: A case of trichotillomania, or compulsive hair-pulling, involving the eyelids is presented to alert ophthalmologists to this common, but frequently overlooked cause of eyelash and eyebrow alopecia.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Clinical records of a 33-year-old woman suffering from trichotillomania were reviewed. Compulsive hair-pulling began in childhood and had become chronic. Psychiatric intervention was unsuccessful.

Between 1983 and 1986, six eyes with diffuse malignant melanomas of the anterior uvea were enucleated at the Eye Hospital of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. The characteristic clinical findings were a monolateral open-angle glaucoma in the same eye and a diffuse spreading of malignant melanocytes on the inner walls of the anterior chamber. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the denervation and reinnervation history of individual segments of the iris sphincter in patients with Adie's syndrome.
DESIGN: The irises of these patients were retroilluminated by shining an infrared-rich light through the lower eyelid and sclera and viewing the transilluminated iris from the front with an infrared-sensitive video camera. The irises of the same group of patients also were videotaped through a slit-lamp camera using routine frontal illumination. Both of these techniques also were used to examine a series of normal subjects.

Fungal keratitis remains a frequent cause of corneal morbidity in tropical regions, particularly after trivial trauma involving plant material. Dematiaceous fungi constitute a smaller subgroup of filamentous organisms but may present with characteristic pigmentation over the corneal lesion. We report a series of three patients who developed conjunctival inclusion cysts following manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS). A 47-year-old man presented to our emergency department complaining of acute ocular pain and redness of his left eye. Ophthalmological antecedents included use of semi-rigid contact lens and primary open-angle glaucoma. We tried to evaluate prevalence and characteristics of Iranian HIV infected patients with retinitis due to opportunistic infections. In this cross sectional study, we evaluated 106 HIV infected patients via indirect ophthalmoscopy and slit lamp examination by 90 lens to find retinitis cases. General information and results of ophthalmologic examination were analyzed.
