Everyday adaptation in a gilded trap: Risk-taking and resilience in Maine's lobster fishery.

Flexibility is widely regarded as an enabling factor of adaptive capacity among natural resource users. Yet, as ecological systems around the world become increasingly simplified and social environments reduce diversification options, flexibility is becoming limited. Despite this trend, efforts to study how people adapt within the confines of constrained social-ecological systems have been sparse. Here, we broaden the analysis of resilience through a study of the American lobster fishery in Maine, United States, one of the most valuable fisheries in the world. Drawing on 307,000 observations f

Implicit learning of social information in contextual cueing.

Human attention is often guided by contextual cues that signal where or how to focus in complex environments. Research on object contextual cueing has largely emphasized spatial regularities, but it remains unclear whether socially meaningful information can also provide such guidance. Across three experiments using face stimuli, we examined whether social cues can serve as contextual cues independently of spatial arrangements. In all experiments, participants searched for a target face among distractor faces, with spatial configurations fully randomized on every trial, and contextual informat

Why does FND mainly affect women? A consideration of gender imbalance in neuropsychiatric disease.

BACKGROUND: Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a common and disabling neuropsychiatric condition in which women comprise approximately 75% of cases. This paper examines whether the gender imbalance seen in FND is unique among neurological and psychiatric conditions and explores the biological, psychological, and social contributors to this disparity. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Gender ratios were compared across depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, Parkinson's disease, and multip

A qualitative systematic review of the impact of hearing on quality of life.

PURPOSE: Hearing loss, deafness, and other hearing-related conditions can significantly impact quality of life; numerous qualitative studies have sought to describe these impacts. Synthesis of these findings may provide additional or more robust insights. METHODS: A qualitative systematic review of studies reporting qualitative data relating to the impact of hearing problems on adults' health-related quality of life. A subset of studies was included in the review and subsequently analysed using a thematic approach. RESULTS: The literature search yielded 129 studies, of which 22 met our inclu

Safety risks among frail older people living at home in the Netherlands - A cross-sectional study in a routine primary care sample.

Frail older people face a range of problems and risks that could undermine their ability to live safely at home. A comprehensive overview of these risks, from a multidimensional perspective, is currently lacking. This study aims to examine the prevalence of risks in multiple domains of life among frail older people living at home. We used cross-sectional data from 824 people aged 65 years and older, who received a comprehensive geriatric assessment (the interRAI Home Care [interRAI-HC]) between 2014 and 2018, as part of routine care from 25 general practices in the region of West-Friesland, th

Sedentary behavior and depression among community-dwelling adults aged ≥50 years: Results from the irish longitudinal study on Ageing.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior (SB) may be a risk factor for depression in middle- and old age adults. The aim of this study was to examine cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between SB and depression in a large national sample of Irish people aged 50 and older taking into account a wide range of previously identified influential factors. METHODS: Data from the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing survey were analyzed (wave 1: 2009-2011, wave 2: 2012-2013). Depression was assessed with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. Total weekday SB and control variables were

Benzodiazepines and anticonvulsants for social phobia (social anxiety disorder).

Both benzodiazepines and conventional anticonvulsants have been evaluated as treatments for social phobia (social anxiety disorder). Among the benzodiazepines, clonazepam is the best studied, although there is reason to expect that all benzodiazepine anxiolytics would be effective for this condition. Among the anticonvulsants, gabapentin and pregabalin, an analogue of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), have been shown to be more effective than placebo in double-blind studies. Other than a small negative open study of valproic acid for social phobia, there is a paucity of information on whether ot

Adolescent emotional disorder symptoms and transdiagnostic vulnerabilities as predictors of young adult substance use during the COVID-19 pandemic: mediation by substance-related coping behaviors.

The COVID-19 pandemic presents unique stressors (e.g. social isolation) that may increase substance use risk among young adults with a history of emotional disturbance. This study examined whether emotional disorder symptoms and transdiagnostic vulnerabilities during adolescence predicted young adult substance use during COVID-19, and whether using substances to cope with the pandemic's social conditions mediated these associations. Adolescents (N = 2,120) completed baseline surveys assessing transdiagnostic emotional vulnerabilities (anhedonia, distress intolerance, anxiety sensitivity, negat…

Freezing Displayed by Others Is a Learned Cue of Danger Resulting from Co-experiencing Own Freezing and Shock.

Social cues of threat are widely reported [1-3], whether actively produced to trigger responses in others such as alarm calls or by-products of an encounter with a predator, like the defensive behaviors themselves such as escape flights [4-14]. Although the recognition of social alarm cues is often innate [15-17], in some instances it requires experience to trigger defensive responses [4, 7]. One mechanism proposed for how learning from self-experience contributes to social behavior is that of auto-conditioning, whereby subjects learn to associate their own behaviors with relevant trigger even

Could social prescribing contribute to type 2 diabetes prevention in people at high risk? Protocol for a realist, multilevel, mixed methods review and evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing is an innovation being widely adopted within the UK National Health Service policy as a way of improving the management of people with long-term conditions, such as type 2 diabetes (T2D). It generally involves linking patients in primary care with non-medical community-based interventions. Despite widespread national support, evidence for the effectiveness of social prescribing is both insufficient and contested. In this study, we will investigate whether social prescribing can contribute to T2D prevention and, if so, when, how and in what circumstances it migh

Language-based labeling modulates oscillatory neural dynamics of social pain processing.

The neurocognitive mechanisms underlying language-based implicit modulation of social pain remain poorly understood. To examine the neural dynamics associated with this process, we recorded electroencephalography (EEG) from 39 healthy adults completing a three-condition labeling task: social exclusion labeling, affect labeling, and gender labeling. Results showed that social exclusion labeling produced stronger modulation of social pain-related neural responses than affect labeling, as reflected in reduced N400 and P300 amplitudes, suggesting a more efficient allocation of cognitive resources

Mixed Methods for Research on Support Networks of People Experiencing Chronic Illness and Social Marginalization.

Substantial research has focused on how social networks help individuals navigate the illness experience. Sociologists have begun to theorize beyond the binary of strong and weak social network ties (e.g., compartmental, elastic, and disposable ties), citing the social, economic, and health conditions that shape their formation. However, limited research has employed mixed social network methods, which we argue is especially critical for examining the "non-traditional" social support networks of marginalized individuals. We employ quantitative social network methods (i.e., the egocentric netwo

The distribution of and relationship between autistic traits and social anxiety in a UK student population.

Traits associated with autism and social anxiety were assessed in a UK student population (n = 1325) using the Autism-spectrum Quotient and the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale. Clinically relevant levels of autistic traits were observed in 3.3% of the cohort; 10.1% of the cohort reported clinically relevant levels of social anxiety; 1.8% of the cohort met clinically relevant cut-offs for both conditions. There was a significant positive correlation between scores on the two scales (r = .51); students with high levels of autistic traits were more likely to report increased social anxiety than th

Neural processing of social participation in borderline personality disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are known to be highly sensitive to social rejection. Social information processing is assumed to play a key role for this shared psychopathological phenomenon. The first steps in social information processing are to encode social cues and to create a mental representation of the social situation. The aim of the current study was to test whether the perception of social participation in patients with BPD and patients with SAD is biased in this initial stage of social processing. Focus was on the

Mental health of clinic-attending Syrian refugee women in Jordan: associations between social ecological risks factors and mental health symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of refugee women is often affected by multiple risk factors in their social ecology. Assessing these risk factors is foundational in determining potential areas for intervention. We used the social ecological model to examine risk factors associated with self-reported mental health symptoms among clinic-attending Syrian refugee women in Jordan. We hypothesize that individual (older age, unmarried, have more children under 18, difficulty reading/writing with ease), interpersonal (intimate partner violence [IPV]), community and societal level risk factors (greater n

Orienting and maintenance of gaze to facial expressions in social anxiety.

In 2 experiments, the authors tested predictions from cognitive models of social anxiety regarding attentional biases for social and nonsocial cues by monitoring eye movements to pictures of faces and objects in high social anxiety (HSA) and low social anxiety (LSA) individuals. Under no-stress conditions (Experiment 1), HSA individuals initially directed their gaze toward neutral faces, relative to objects, more often than did LSA participants. However, under social-evaluative stress (Experiment 2), HSA individuals showed reduced biases in initial orienting and maintenance of gaze on faces (c

The Impact of Prematurity on Social and Emotional Development.

Behavioral and emotional problems are one of the most frequent chronic conditions diagnosed among children born prematurely. The high prevalence of these pathologies is a matter of concern because of their impact on family life, school performance, and social interaction, but also because of current limitations in early detection and access to treatment. This is a review of the various mechanisms by which premature birth affects social and emotional development, and a discussion about strategies that may help support emotional and social development in this high-risk population.

A chronological map of 308 physical and mental health conditions from 4 million individuals in the English National Health Service.

BACKGROUND: To effectively prevent, detect, and treat health conditions that affect people during their lifecourse, health-care professionals and researchers need to know which sections of the population are susceptible to which health conditions and at which ages. Hence, we aimed to map the course of human health by identifying the 50 most common health conditions in each decade of life and estimating the median age at first diagnosis. METHODS: We developed phenotyping algorithms and codelists for physical and mental health conditions that involve intensive use of health-care resources. Indi

AAPL guideline for forensic evaluation of psychiatric disabilities: a disability law perspective.

Contemporary disability law takes into account the insight that physical and mental conditions need not be disabling but for the environmental and attitudinal barriers that keep people with disabilities from social participation on a plane of equality with others. The need to use a wheelchair does not disable except for curbs and stairs, and many mental conditions do not disable except for social attitudes. The "AAPL Guideline for Forensic Evaluation of Psychiatric Disabilities" is a refreshing departure from writings that approach disability from a perspective that focuses on nothing but medi

Co-occurring Neurodevelopmental Conditions in Children: Advocating for Transdiagnostic Approach to Assessments.

Approximately 8% of all children experience developmental and mental health conditions. Similarities in characteristics across neurodevelopmental conditions-such as difficulties in communication and language, social interaction, motor coordination, attention, activity regulation, behavior, mood, and sleep-make it challenging to attribute these characteristics exclusively to specific diagnoses and assessments. The purpose of this study was to identify symptomatic domains across neurodevelopmental conditions in children and to explore dimension reduction for transdiagnostic assessment. Cluster a
