Social marketing interventions to increase HIV/STI testing uptake among men who have sex with men and male-to-female transgender women.

BACKGROUND: Social marketing interventions have been shown to both promote and change many health-related behaviours and issues. As the HIV epidemic continues to disproportionately affect MSM and transgender women around the world, social marketing interventions have the potential to increase HIV/STI testing uptake among these populations. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of social marketing interventions on HIV/STI testing uptake among men who have sex with men and transgender women compared to pre-intervention or control group testing uptake in the same population. SEARCH STRATEGY: We sear

The role of health literacy in clinical, treatment, and work-related outcomes in people with inflammatory arthritis in England: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy has been deemed central to the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases by WHO, including rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. However, the association between health literacy, other social determinants of health, and outcomes in people with inflammatory arthritis remains poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the associations between health literacy, social determinants of health, and clinical, mental health, and work-related outcomes in people with inflammatory arthritis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used individual-level data from pat

Examining the Influence of Social Network Factors on Weight Loss Among Latina and Non-Hispanic White Breast Cancer Survivors: Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women and is the leading cause of cancer death among Latina individuals. Breast cancer survivors are at increased risk of obesity. Mobile health interventions have been shown to be an effective way of reducing the risk of weight gain. Less studied but also important is the extent to which social networks play a role in supporting or undermining weight loss efforts. OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between 4 kinds of social network interactions and change in BMI among Latina and non-Hispanic White breast cancer survivo

Relationship of binge drinking to alcohol dependence, other psychiatric disorders, and behavioral problems in an American Indian tribe.

The hypothesis that binge drinking is a benign behavior not associated with alcohol dependence, other psychiatric disorders, or problem areas, in American Indians, was tested in a sample of 582 adult Southwestern American Indian males and females in large multigenerational pedigrees. All information was obtained from semistructured psychiatric interviews that were independently blind-rated for DSM-III-R diagnoses. Three main outcome measures were used: the relationship between binge drinking and (1) alcohol dependence and other psychiatric disorders, (2) substance abuse treatment, and (3) four

Can Social Network Analysis Help Address the High Rates of Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infections in Saskatchewan?

BACKGROUND: Saskatchewan has one of the highest rates of gonorrhea among the Canadian provinces-more than double the national rate. In light of these high rates, and the growing threat of untreatable infections, improved understanding of gonorrhea transmission dynamics in the province and evaluation of the current system and tools for disease control are important. METHODS: We extracted data from a cross-sectional sample of laboratory-confirmed gonorrhea cases between 2003 and 2012 from the notifiable disease files of the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region. The database was stratified by calenda

Developmental delays and reduced pup ultrasonic vocalizations but normal sociability in mice lacking the postsynaptic cell adhesion protein neuroligin2.

Mutations in neurexin and neuroligin genes have been associated with neurodevelopmental disabilities including autism. Autism spectrum disorder is diagnosed by aberrant reciprocal social interactions, deficits in social communication, and repetitive, stereotyped patterns of behaviors, along with narrow restricted interests. Mouse models have been successfully used to study physiological and behavioral outcomes of mutations in the trans-synaptic neurexin-neuroligin complex. To further understand the behavioral consequences of Neuroligin2 (NLGN2) mutations, we assessed several behavioral phenoty

The effect of ostensive communication on immediate and delayed memory of novel and familiar action patterns.

Actions are often learnt incidentally by observing other individuals. How aspects inherent to the social context in which an action is seen affect action learning remains poorly understood. Here we study the effect of a special social signal, the eye gaze of the demonstrator, on the immediate and delayed memory and execution of observed actions. In Experiment 1, healthy young adult volunteers (N = 37) watched short videos of a demonstrator performing novel actions with novel objects only once, and were tested for immediate and delayed recall of those actions through action execution. Overall,

Behaviour change interventions to promote health and well-being among older migrants: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Whether behaviour change interventions are effective for the maintenance of older migrants' health and well-being is uncertain. A systematic review was conducted to assess evidence for the capacity of behaviour change techniques (BCTs) to promote the health and well-being of older migrants. METHODS: Electronic databases (Cochrane CENTRAL, Embase, Ovid MEDLINE and Web of Science) were searched systematically to identify relevant randomised controlled trials, pre-post studies and quasi-experimental studies published before March 2021. Additional articles were identified through cita

Barriers and opportunities to addressing social determinants of malaria in Wakiso District, Uganda.

Malaria remains a significant public health threat in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Uganda, where it is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. There is limited evidence on factors related to social determinants within ongoing malaria control efforts in the country. This study explored barriers and opportunities in addressing the social determinants of malaria in Uganda. A qualitative study was conducted in Wakiso district. Data were collected through 10 focus group discussions with community members and community health workers (CHWs), 11 in-depth interviews with heads of househol

Amygdalohippocampal Area Neurons That Project to the Preoptic Area Mediate Infant-Directed Attack in Male Mice.

Male animals may show alternative behaviors toward infants: attack or parenting. These behaviors are triggered by pup stimuli under the influence of the internal state, including the hormonal environment and/or social experiences. Converging data suggest that the medial preoptic area (MPOA) contributes to the behavioral selection toward the pup. However, the neural mechanisms underlying how integrated stimuli affect the MPOA-dependent behavioral selection remain unclear. Here we focus on the amygdalohippocampal area (AHi) that projects to MPOA and expresses oxytocin receptor, a hormone recepto

Trust repair under social surveillance: Behavioral and neural evidence for reputational buffering.

Trust repair requires victims to evaluate both the adequacy of a transgressor's restitution and the social meaning of their response. This research examined whether cues of social surveillance alter the processing of financial compensation after trust violations. Across two experiments using a modified Trust Game, we tested the behavioral and neural effects of eye cues and compensation levels. Experiment 1 showed that eye cues and compensation independently promoted behavioral trust repair. Equal compensation and overcompensation produced greater repair than undercompensation, whereas overcomp

Moderators of peer influence effects for adolescents' smoking and vaping norms and outcomes in high and middle-income settings.

BACKGROUND: Peer influence is central to adolescent smoking initiation, yet its impact varies depending on individual and contextual factors. Understanding which moderators (personality, contextual, cultural, and environmental traits) shape these processes can inform more effective prevention strategies. We investigated hypothesized moderators of peer influence for adolescent smoking/vaping norms and other smoking-related outcomes in high and low-middle-income countries (LMICs): Northern Ireland and Bogotá. METHODS: Across 12 schools (n = 1,344, age 12-13 years), participants completed novel

The economic consequences of narcolepsy.

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder with a typical onset in childhood or early adulthood. Narcolepsy may have serious negative effects on health-, social-, education-, and work-related issues for people with narcolepsy and for their families. The disease may, thus, present a significant socioeconomic burden, but no studies to date have addressed the indirect and direct costs of narcolepsy. METHODS: Using records from the Danish National Patient Registry (1998-2005), we identified 459 Danish patients with the diagnosis of narcolepsy. Using a ratio of 1 patient record

Social networks and infectious diseases prevention behavior: A cross-sectional study in people aged 40 years and older.

BACKGROUND: Social networks, i.e., our in-person and online social relations, are key to lifestyle behavior and health, via mechanisms of influence and support from our relations. We assessed associations between various social network aspects and practicing behavior to prevent respiratory infectious diseases. METHODS: We analyzed baseline-data (2019) from the SaNAE-cohort on social networks and health, collected by an online questionnaire in Dutch community-dwelling people aged 40-99 years. Outcome was the number of preventive behaviors in past two months [range 0-4]. Associations between ne

Another voice in the crowd: the challenge of changing family planning and child feeding practices through mHealth messaging in rural central India.

INTRODUCTION: Kilkari is one of the world's largest mobile phone-based health messaging programmes. Developed by BBC Media Action, it provides weekly stage-based information to pregnant and postpartum women and their families, including on infant and young child feeding (IYCF) and family planning, to compliment the efforts of frontline health workers. The quantitative component of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh found that exposure to Kilkari increased modern contraceptive uptake but did not change IYCF practices. This qualitative research complements

The role of perceived social support in loneliness and self-esteem among children affected by HIV/AIDS: a longitudinal multilevel analysis in rural China.

OBJECTIVES: To delineate the trajectories of loneliness and self-esteem over time among children affected by parental HIV and AIDS, and to examine how their perceived social support (PSS) influenced initial scores and change rates of these two psychological outcomes. DESIGN: We collected longitudinal data from children affected by parental HIV/AIDS in rural central China. Children 6-18 years of age at baseline were eligible to participate in the study and were assessed annually for 3 years. METHODS: Multilevel regression models for change were used to assess the effect of baseline PSS on the

Loneliness and problematic use of conversational artificial intelligence among college students: the serial mediating roles of social anxiety and self-control.

OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is an important public health concern associated with individuals' physical and mental wellbeing. As conversational artificial intelligence (CAI) becomes more widely used, concerns about its problematic use have attracted increasing attention. However, the link between loneliness and problematic use of conversational artificial intelligence (PUCAI) remains insufficiently understood. The current research explored the link between loneliness and PUCAI among college students, with social anxiety and self-control evaluated as serial mediators. These findings provide prelimin

The prognosis following amphetamine poisoning.

AIMS: This study investigated the long-term mortality following poisoning by amphetamine or substituted amphetamines. Furthermore, we examined the social problems and somatic and psychiatric co-morbidity related to amphetamine poisoning, and their impact on the long-term survival. METHODS: We identified amphetamine poisoned patients from the Danish Poison Information Centre database and correlated their personal identification numbers with seven Danish national registries related to different social and health aspects. For each case, we sampled 100 age and gender matched controls from the bac

Revisiting attentional processing of non-emotional cues in social anxiety: A specific impairment for the orienting network of attention.

People with social anxiety disorder (SAD) exhibit an attentional bias for threat (AB). Nevertheless, the focus on AB for emotional stimuli has led to neglect the exploration of basic attention deficits for non-emotional material among SAD patients. This study aimed to investigate the integrity of the attentional system in SAD. The Attention Network Test was used to precisely explore attentional deficits, and centrally the differential deficit across the three attentional networks, namely alerting (allowing to achieve and maintain a state of alertness), orienting (allowing to select information

Daily fluctuation of emotions and memories thereof: Design and methods of an experience sampling study of major depression, social phobia, and controls.

Symptom fluctuations and the dynamic contexts provoking these are poorly understood. This deficit is compounded by people's limited ability to accurately report about such dimensions in retrospect. Utilizing the advantages of experience sampling methodology (ESM), this study rigorously describes and tests proximal environmental, neurobiological and psychological factors associated with symptoms and mood states. Participants were assigned to three diagnostic groups: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD; n = 118), Social Phobia (SP; n = 47), or a Control Group without SP or MDD (CG; n = 119). Laborato
