Perspectives on oral health care integration in HIV care and research in low-resource settings: Insights from patients and key stakeholders in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Oral health conditions are common among people living with HIV, yet many have unmet needs for oral health care. In most low-income countries like Uganda, oral health is not yet integrated in the HIV care settings. We aimed to explore the stakeholder's perspectives on oral health care integration in HIV care and research settings. METHODS: We conducted focused group discussions (FGDs) among people living with HIV (PLHIV) and semi-structured interviews among other key stakeholders that included policy makers, educators and practitioners in fields of HIV and oral health. The particip

Present and future of extraoral maxillofacial prosthodontics: Cancer rehabilitation.

Historically, facial prosthetics have successfully rehabilitated individuals with acquired or congenital anatomical deficiencies of the face. This history includes extensive efforts in research and development to explore best practices in materials, methods, and artisanal techniques. Presently, extraoral maxillofacial rehabilitation is managed by a multiprofessional team that has evolved with a broadened scope of knowledge, skills, and responsibility. This includes the mandatory integration of different professional specialists to cover the bio-psycho-social needs of the patient, systemic heal

A social cascades model of addiction: Examining effects of psychological interventions on social and substance use outcomes via meta-analytic review.

Addiction has long been observed to manifest in social landscapes characterized by high levels of dysfunction, including interpersonal conflict, low social support, and a high density of substance-using peers. Two lines of work have emerged to understand these correlations-one examining how social environments might foster addiction and the other centered primarily around the detrimental effects of substance use on social life. Here, we test a novel cascades model positing bidirectional relationships between individuals' social environments and substance use, integrating theory from basic beha

Associations between living alone, social interactions, and physical performance differ by sex: Results from the Baltimore Hip Studies.

BACKGROUND: There is mixed evidence on whether living arrangements and social interactions are associated with poorer health outcomes after hip fracture repair. Distinct social profiles among male and female older adults may explain some of the differences. However, prior studies did not evaluate these differences by sex. This article aims to assess if the associations between living alone, social interaction, and physical performance differ by sex among hip fracture survivors. METHODS: This prospective cohort study is part of the Baltimore Hip Studies seventh cohort, with 168 male and 171 fe

Implementing care for healthy ageing.

The WHO concept of Healthy Ageing (ie, the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age) has initiated a global discussion about the need for shifting paradigms to reorient health and social services towards person-centred and coordinated models of care. In particular, the integration of health and social care services is critical to provide the basis for comprehensive information sharing and service delivery to support the evolution of the older person over time. The capability to monitor and respond to an older person's changing health and

For socially engaged science: The dynamics of knowledge production in the Fiocruz graduate program in the framework of the "Brazil Without Extreme Poverty Plan".

Public policy planning associated with the management of the Science, Technology, and Innovation is decisive to improve public health. It is important to develop novel strategies to plan, supervise, manage, use and evaluate research using indicators that extrapolates metrics in current use. In 2011, the Brazilian government introduced the Brazil Without Extreme Poverty plan (BWEP) that aimed to integrate several conditional cash transfer programs (CCT). The original that aimed to integrate of the CCTs were expanded in order to integrate social justice and dignity that induced several actions t

A data-driven approach to implementing the HPTN 094 complex intervention INTEGRA in local communities.

BACKGROUND: HIV burden in the US among people who inject drugs (PWID) is driven by overlapping syndemic factors such as co-occurring health needs and environmental factors that synergize to produce worse health outcomes among PWID. This includes stigma, poverty, and limited healthcare access (e.g. medication to treat/prevent HIV and for opioid use disorder [MOUD]). Health services to address these complex needs, when they exist, are rarely located in proximity to each other or to the PWID who need them. Given the shifting drug use landscapes and geographic heterogeneity in the US, we evaluate

Family Carers' Perspectives on Integrated Community Care in the Czech Republic.

AIM: The problem of family care for people dependent on another person has only recently become a focus of research. As demand for health and social services has not been adequately met by public service providers, growing attention has been given to informal care and the integration of families within systems of health and social care at the community level. This paper presents the results of a survey on informal carers' views and opinions under the current conditions of social support in the Czech Republic. The survey was based on theoretical concepts of caring societies, deinstitutionalizat

An investigator-blinded, randomized study to compare the efficacy of combined CBT for alcohol use disorders and social anxiety disorder versus CBT focused on alcohol alone in adults with comorbid disorders: the Combined Alcohol Social Phobia (CASP) trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders and social anxiety disorder are common and disabling conditions that frequently co-exist. Although there are efficacious treatments for each disorder, only two randomized controlled trials of interventions for these combined problems have been published. We developed a new integrated treatment for comorbid Social Anxiety Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder based on established Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) interventions for the separate disorders. Compared to established MI/CBT for alcohol use disorders this new interventio

Impact of different degrees of social engagement interventions (DDSEIs) on cognitive performance and brain activity in community-dwelling adults with subjective cognitive decline in Nanjing, China: a randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Social isolation may have adverse effects on incidence and severity of cognitive impairment including subjective cognitive decline (SCD). An increase of environmental variety and social interactions may furthermore reduce progression from SCD to dementia. Research evaluating respective interventions is limited, particularly as regards studies comparing different degrees of social engagement interventions. We thus developed a clinical trial protocol to determine the efficacy of social interventions with different intensities in protecting cognitive function and white matter integr

Seeing red: How perceptions of social status and worth influence hostile attributions and endorsement of aggression.

Within social hierarchies, low social status is associated with increased vigilance, hostile expectations, and reactive aggression. We propose that societal devaluation is common across many low social status groups and produces a sense of threatened social worth. Threatened social worth may lead those of low status to be more vigilant towards social threats, thereby increasing the likelihood of hostile attributions and endorsement of aggression. Integrating theory on belongingness, social rejection, and stigma compensation, two studies test a sequential process model demonstrating that threat

Transmission dynamics of pulmonary tuberculosis between autochthonous and immigrant sub-populations.

BACKGROUND: The overall incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in Western Europe has been declining since the 19th Century. However, immigrant sub-groups from high-prevalence countries are slowing down this trend. The aim of this study was to describe how immigration influences TB transmission in Germany. For that we prospectively investigated the dynamics of TB transmission between TB high-prevalence immigrant and TB low-prevalence local populations with molecular epidemiological methods and conventional contact investigations. Besides, we assessed transmission in relation to social mixing using an i

Effects of social isolation on all-cause mortality in older adults: do age, gender, and measurement matter?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research has suggested that social isolation increases mortality risk. However, findings have been mixed regarding gender differences, and few studies have explored age differences among older adults. We examined whether the association of social isolation and all-cause mortality varied by gender and age and compared two established measures of social isolation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants (N = 7,026, age 65+) in the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) were followed up to 12 years. 2 NHATS-based social isolation measures (Pohl and Cudjoe), b

When Social Hierarchy, Power, and Collective Autonomy Motivate Social Movement and Counter-Movement Mobilization Among Disadvantaged and Advantaged Groups.

What happens when disadvantaged group members try to gain power in an attempt to protect their collective autonomy? The present integrative review outlines dynamic social processes and conditions under which efforts to restrict a group's collective autonomy motivate social movement mobilization among disadvantaged groups to challenge social hierarchies that limit their power. This, in turn, threatens advantaged groups' perceptions of their access to power and, by extension, their sense of collective autonomy, motivating them to reaffirm the existing social hierarchy by mobilizing counter-movem

Oral health can be a driver of the UK health transformation agenda.

Oral health is a critical yet underutilised lever for health system transformation in the UK. Despite being among the most prevalent noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), oral conditions remain dominated by costly, intervention-based care models. The World Health Organization's Global Oral Health Action Plan (2023-2030) and recent UK health reform agendas present an opportunity to embed oral health within primary care and universal health coverage frameworks. This paper argues for a paradigm shift toward prevention, integration, and equity, addressing shared risk factors across NCDs through team-ba

Enhancing social and linguistic skills in children with autism: A semi-randomized controlled clinical trial of a virtual reality-based communicative rehabilitation programme.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, and conventional therapies often struggle to facilitate the generalization of these skills to real-world settings. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR)-based communication rehabilitation intervention as a supplement to conventional treatment for improving the linguistic and social communication skills of Arabic-speaking Egyptian children with ASD. A clinical trial with a pretest-posttest control group design was employed, wherein 60 children aged 4-6 years with m
