Mitigating the affective and cognitive consequences of social exclusion: an integrative data analysis of seven social disconnection interventions.

BACKGROUND: Being socially excluded has detrimental effects, with prolonged exclusion linked to loneliness and social isolation. Social disconnection interventions that do not require direct support actions (e.g., "how can I help?") offer promise in mitigating the affective and cognitive consequences of social exclusion. We examine how various social disconnection interventions involving friends and unknown peers might mitigate social exclusion by buffering (intervening before) and by promoting recovery (intervening after). METHODS: We present an integrative data analysis (IDA) of five studie

Amelioration and deterioration: Social network typologies and mental health among female domestic workers in China.

Previous quantitative studies on the effects of social network types on mental health have obtained inconsistent or conflicting results, due to problems such as sample selection bias or crude measurement of variables. In this study, we avoided these problems by using appropriate statistical methodology to examine the effect of various forms of social network on the mental health of a sample of 987 Chinese female domestic workers. Thus, we measured social network types in terms of both network attributes (friend networks and family networks) and interaction channels (face-to-face, telephone, an

The richness of social stimuli shapes developmental trajectories: Are laboratory mouse pups impoverished?

The early environment is crucial for brain and behavior development. In particular, social experiences involving the mother and the peers are critical in shaping the adult individual. Though animal models of psychiatric disorders have widely investigated the relevance of the mother-offspring interaction, the peer interaction has so far been rarely studied. The communal nest (CN) is an innovative experimental strategy that favors a more comprehensive investigation of the long-term effects of both components. CN is a rearing condition employed by up to 90% of mouse females in naturalistic settin

Social Network Factors Associated with the Intention to Use Digital Mental Health Interventions Among AANHPI Emerging Adults: Application and Integration of the Network Episode Model.

BACKGROUND: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) emerging adults face significant mental health disparities yet consistently underutilize formal mental health services. Digital mental health interventions (DMHI) have been proposed as a solution; however, the social network factors shaping intention to use DMHIs in this population remain poorly understood among this highly collectivist population. Prior work has established that individual-level factors derived from the Seeking Mental Health Care model (i.e., perceived need, mental health literacy, and stigma) are asso

Interaction of lithium and sleep deprivation on memory performance and anxiety-like behavior in male Wistar rats.

Sleep plays a crucial role in the modulation of physiological and cognitive functions. Many studies have reported the impairment effect of s … mg/kg, for three consecutive days. The results showed that SD impaired passive avoidance memory and social interaction memory, and decreased anxiety-like behavior. Lithium also impaired passive avoidance memory and induced an anxiolytic effect, while it improved social interaction memory and reversed the impairment effect of SD on social interaction memory. In concl …

A Single Test to Study Social Behavior and Repetitive Self-grooming in Mice.

The ability to recognize and interact with members of the same species is essential for social communication. Investigating the neural substrates of social interest and recognition may offer insights into the behavioral differences present in disorders affecting social behavior. Assays used to study social interest in rodents include the 3-chamber test, a partition test, and a social interaction test. Here, we present a single protocol that can be used to quantify the level of social interest displayed by mice, the ability to distinguish between different individual mice (social recognition), …

μ-Opioid Receptor (Oprm1) Copy Number Influences Nucleus Accumbens Microcircuitry and Reciprocal Social Behaviors.

The μ-opioid receptor regulates reward derived from both drug use and natural experiences, including social interaction, through actions in the nucleus accumbens. Here, we studied nucleus accumbens microcircuitry and social behavior in male and female mice with heterozygous genetic knockout of the μ-opioid receptor (Oprm1+/-). This genetic condition models the partial reduction of μ-opioid receptor signaling reported in several neuropsychiatric disorders. We first analyzed inhibitory synapses in the nucleus accumbens, using methods that differentiate between medium spiny neurons (MSNs) express…

Increased sensitivity to the effects of chronic social defeat stress in an innately anxious mouse strain.

Stress and genetic predisposition are two of the major risk factors for a variety of psychiatric illnesses. Inbred mouse strains are conside … eated (10 days) social defeat stress on a variety of behavioural and endocrine parameters including social interaction, locomotor activity, plasma corticosterone, body weight and stress-related physiological parameters in both mouse strains. Given that the duration of stress exposure may differentially affect such responses we also compared stressors of short (Socia …

Childhood adversity and depressive symptoms among young adults: Examining the roles of individuation difficulties and perceived social support.

AIM: While childhood adversity is a known risk for depressive symptoms, little is known about the contributing role of individuation difficulties among young adults. The present study examined individuation difficulties and perceived social support-and their interaction-as moderators of the relationship between childhood adversity exposure and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Young adults (N = 119; M = 20.8 years) completed self-report assessments of childhood adversity, depressive symptoms, individuation difficulties, and perceived social support. Regression analyses were used to examine intera

AI Chatbot Dependence as an Indirect Link Between Social Anxiety and Psychological Resilience: The Moderating Role of Perceived Social Support.

Generative artificial intelligence has transformed AI chatbots into systems that can provide information, emotional feedback, and social interaction. Although prior research has examined AI adoption, trust, and continuance intention, less is known about sustained reliance on AI chatbots and its relationship with psychological adaptation. Drawing on an integrated compensation-resource framework, this study examined whether social anxiety was indirectly associated with psychological resilience through AI chatbot dependence and whether this association varied across levels of perceived social sup…

Navigating social environments is a fundamental challenge for the brain. It has been established that the brain solves this problem, in part … decision-making task, we show that the dmPFC and ACC represent the combinatorial possibilities for social interaction afforded by a given situation, and that they do so in a compressed format resembling the basis functions used in spatial, visual and motor domains10-12. Dissociable contributions of the hippocampus and orbitofrontal cortex to representing task space in a social context.

The hippocampus (HC) and the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) jointly encode a map-like representation of a task space to guide behavior. It remai … en the participants and characters and used a drift-diffusion model to capture the inner process of social interaction. Then we used multivoxel pattern analysis to explore the brain-behavior relationship. We found that (i) both the HC and the OFC showed higher activations during the selective trial than the narrative trial; (ii) the neural pattern of the right HC wa …

Distilling Heterogeneity among Children with Disruptive Behavior: Associations between Symptom Patterns and Social Functioning.

Children with disruptive behavior (DB) are a heterogeneous group who exhibit several characteristics that may contribute to poor social functioning. The present study identified profiles of reactive aggression, proactive aggression, callous-unemotional (CU) traits, and prosocial behavior in a sample of children with DB. Associations with social functioning (social interaction, social status) were then examined, along with sex differences in profile membership. Parent ratings of 304 clinic-referred children ages 6-12 years with DB were analyzed using latent profile analysis. Five profiles were …

Naltrexone increases negatively-valenced facial responses to happy faces in female participants.

Positive social cues, like happy facial expressions, activate the brain's reward system and indicate interest in social affiliation. Facial … happy facial expressions after naltrexone compared to placebo, consistent with lowered interest in social interaction or affiliation. Our findings provide evidence for a role of the opioid system in modulating automatic behavioral responses to cues of reward and social interaction, and translate to rodent models of the mu-opioid system and social affiliation.

Reward-related neural responses are dependent on the beneficiary.

Prior studies have suggested that positive social interactions are experienced as rewarding. Yet, it is not well understood how social relationships influence neural responses to other persons' gains. In this study, we investigated neural responses during a gambling task in which healthy participants (N = 31; 18 females) could win or lose money for themselves, their best friend or a disliked other (antagonist). At the moment of receiving outcome, person-related activity was observed in the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC), precuneus and temporal parietal junction (TPJ), showing higher a…

Nonlinear and sex-specific effects of V1aR deletion on juvenile social behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Social behaviors emerge during juvenile development and require the integration of social motivation, recognition, and context-appropriate responses. Arginine vasopressin signaling through the V1a receptor (V1aR) has been implicated in multiple aspects of social behavior, yet its role across distinct behavioral domains, developmental stages, and sexes remains poorly understood. METHODS: We used a CRISPR/Cas9-generated V1aR knockout model in Syrian hamsters to examine the effects of V1aR disruption on social interaction, social recognition, and social avoidance in juvenile males …
