Understanding the relationships among adolescents' internet dependence, reward, cognitive control processing, and learning burnout: a network perspective in China.

Alterations in the reward and cognitive control systems are commonly observed among adolescents with internet dependence (ID), and this impairment is often accompanied by social dysfunctions, such as academic burnout. However, the intercorrelations among ID, reward, cognitive control processing, and learning burnout remain unclear. We recruited 1074 Chinese adolescents to investigate the complex interrelationships among these variables using network analysis. The resulting network revealed patterns that connected ID to the behavioral inhibition/activation system (BIS/BAS), self-control, and le

The psychometric network structure of mental health in eating disorder patients.

OBJECTIVE: Psychometric network analysis has led to new possibilities to assess the structure and dynamics of psychiatric disorders. The current study focuses on mental health networks in patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and other specified eating disorders (EDs). METHOD: Network analyses were applied with five mental health domains (emotional, psychological and social well-being, and general and specific psychopathology) among 905 ED patients. Also, networks of 36 underlying symptoms related to the domains were estimated. The network stability, structure

Understanding the social context of fatal road traffic collisions among young people: a qualitative analysis of narrative text in coroners' records.

BACKGROUND: Deaths and injuries on the road remain a major cause of premature death among young people across the world. Routinely collected data usually focuses on the mechanism of road traffic collisions and basic demographic data of those involved. This study aimed to supplement these routine sources with a thematic analysis of narrative text contained in coroners' records, to explore the wider social context in which collisions occur. METHODS: Thematic analysis of narrative text from Coroners' records, retrieved from thirty-four fatalities among young people (16-24 year olds) occurring as

A Network Approach to Understanding the Structure of Core Symptoms of Psychopathic Personality Disturbance in Adolescent Offenders.

A central aim of research on psychopathic personality disturbance (PPD) involves identifying core features of the construct. This has been addressed primarily through prototypicality studies and research using item-response theory. More recently, the logic of social network analysis was extended to psychopathology research to examine which symptoms were most central to PPD networks. Such studies identified affective symptoms of the disorder as especially central among adult offenders. To build upon this prior research, the current study used data on male offenders from the Incarcerated Serious…

Borders and Businesses: Intersectional Resilience, Entrepreneurship and Health Promotion Among Immigrant Women in the Post-Pandemic Global South.

This theoretical paper examines immigrant women's entrepreneurship in the post-pandemic Global South. We challenge conventional models that fail to capture economic engagement driven by necessity and survival. Using an intersectional lens, the analysis illuminates how structural vulnerabilities such as-gender, class, income, migratory status, and social hostility-hinder formal market integration. COVID-19 related restrictions exacerbated this precarity, disproportionately affecting informal businesses. We contend that entrepreneurship serves as a pivotal strategy for socio-economic resilience

[Cross-sectional association between social isolation and nutritional status among older urban adults: The Itabashi Longitudinal Study on Aging].

AIM: The social isolation of older Japanese adults with infrequent contact with others diminishes appetite, reduces food intake, and worsens their nutritional status. However, there is insufficient evidence regarding the association between social isolation and nutritional status, with studies primarily confined to rural and suburban areas. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between social isolation and nutritional status among older adults residing in urban areas. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis included 1,052 adults (mean age, 78 years). Nutritional statu

Relationships between received and perceived social support and health-related quality of life among patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment in Mainland China.

BACKGROUND: Social support has been considered one of the most important factors of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) evaluations among different populations; however, few studies have explored the relationships of both received and perceived social support to HRQoL among patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). Thus, the purpose of this cross-sectional study was to clarify these relationships. METHODS: Participants were patients admitted at the two largest privately and publicly funded MMT clinics in Xi'an. The main explanatory variable was social support, both receive

Social Media Engagement and Self-Esteem as Predictors of Adjustment Domains Among Adolescents With Body Dysmorphic Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Social media has influenced the perception of beauty, attraction and body image among adolescents which is significantly regulated by socio-cultural factors. Individuals with low self-confidence and a strong desire for social acceptance tend to seek approval from their environment and become overly concerned with their physical appearance. Adolescents, who are more susceptible to insecurity and adjustment issues, are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of social media. OBJECTIVE: This study comprises two objectives: 1) To investigate the relationship among self-esteem,

Comparative effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for social anxiety disorder in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a prevalent and disabling mental health condition in adults, associated with marked functional impairment, reduced quality of life, and substantial personal and societal burden. Previous meta-analyses have mainly evaluated single non-pharmacological interventions for SAD, but few evidence syntheses have compared the relative effectiveness of multiple non-pharmacological approaches within a unified analytic framework. As a result, the comparative efficacy of these interventions remains unclear. METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Library, EBSCO, PubMe

Unraveling the Cross-Cultural Differences in Online Expression of Social Anxiety in Online Support Communities.

Individuals suffering from social anxiety disorder (SAD) are increasingly turning to online support communities for self-disclosure and social support. Despite the extensive body of research on online mental health discourses, the cultural nuances within SAD-related discussions remain underexplored. In this study, we examine the cultural differences in online expression of social anxiety by analyzing individuals' self-disclosure and support-seeking behaviors in social media posts. Using two-week data (n = 1,681) from two SAD support communities on the Reddit and Douban groups, we used both qua

Social Isolation or Autistic Homophily: An Exploration of the Social Networks of Autistic College Students.

Our understanding of autistic socialization using social network analysis has focused on autistic children and understanding support systems. The purpose of this study is to examine autistic friendship networks in adulthood without focusing on support systems. We broadly recruited autistic and nonautistic college students (n = 592 students). Students provided ego-network information, including demographics, satisfaction with their social relationships, and perceptions of their friends (e.g. perceived neurotype and demographics). Autistic college students reported similar network structure metr…

A qualitative study of methamphetamine initiation among Chinese male users: Patterns and policy implications.

China is a major producer and distributor of methamphetamine (meth) worldwide. Within the last two decades, China has seen rapid growth in meth use, especially among young men. However, patterns of Chinese male users' initiation of meth is rarely explored. To address this void in the literature, this study adopts China's mian'zi culture to explore Chinese male meth users' initiation patterns qualitatively. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 35 male meth users from seven Chinese compulsory drug treatment institutions. Thematic analysis was applied to data analysis. Most participants

Childbirth attitudes in parous and nulliparous women: the roles of cognitive flexibility, perceived social support, and obstetric factors.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth is frequently associated with increased negative emotions, leading to psychological challenges for many pregnant women. In this study, childbirth attitudes are defined as encompassing both fear of childbirth and negative evaluative attitudes toward childbirth. Factors shaping these attitudes, including perceived social support and cognitive flexibility in parous and nulliparous women, remain underexplored. This study aims to examine the influence of perceived social support and cognitive flexibility on childbirth attitudes among parous and nulliparous women based on soci

Functional connectivity between the cerebrum and cerebellum in social cognition: A multi-study analysis.

This multi-study connectivity analysis explores the functional connectivity of the cerebellum with the cerebrum in social mentalizing, that is, understanding the mind of another person. The analysis covers 5 studies (n=92) involving abstract and complex forms of social mentalizing such as (a) person and group impression formation based on behavioral descriptions and (b) constructing personal counterfactual events (i.e., how the past could have turned out better). The results suggest that cerebellar activity during these social processes reflects a domain-specific mentalizing functionality that

New Perspective on Digital Well-Being by Distinguishing Digital Competency From Dependency: Network Approach.

BACKGROUND: In the digital age, there is an emerging area of research focusing on digital well-being (DWB), yet conceptual frameworks of this novel construct are lacking. The current conceptualization either approaches the concept as the absence of digital ill-being, running the risk of pathologizing individual digital use, or follows the general subjective well-being framework, failing to highlight the complex digital nature at play. OBJECTIVE: This preregistered study aimed to address this gap by using a network analysis, which examined the strength of the relationships among affective (dig

Integrated network pharmacology and UHPLC-Q-TOF LC-MS/MS phytochemical profiling demonstrate tilianin-mediated restoration of PDE10A/cAMP/PKA/CREB signaling in an MK-801-induced schizophrenia-like model.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by impairments in cognition, perception, and social behavior. Current antipsychotic medications primarily target dopaminergic signaling but often exhibit limited efficacy in treating negative and cognitive symptoms. Moreover, long-term antipsychotic therapy is frequently associated with clinically relevant adverse effects, including metabolic syndrome and extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS). Phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A) has emerged as a promising non-dopaminergic therapeutic target involved in regulating cyclic nucleoti

Defensive networks provide basis for late pre-Hispanic Andean polities.

Regional polities may emerge from the development of a centralized hierarchy of a specific political regime, or from bottom-up patterns of interaction and collective action, especially mutual defense. In this study, we assess the proposition that the development of late pre-Hispanic polities of the south-central Andes was significantly shaped by defensive networks of pukaras (hillforts), which were in turn shaped by variable affordances for fortification in the mountainous Andean landscape. Pukaras are very common in the Andean highlands and date overwhelmingly to 1250 to 1500 CE, reflecting a
