Longitudinal patterns of visual impairment and trajectories of cognitive function and depressive symptoms in older adults: the moderating role of social vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: Most studies treat visual impairment (VI) as a static, binary exposure. Less is known about whether distinct longitudinal VI patterns are differentially associated with later cognitive and affective trajectories, and whether social vulnerability modifies these associations. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether longitudinal VI patterns classified by directionality and chronicity are differentially associated with trajectories of cognitive function and depressive symptoms, and whether social vulnerability modifies these associations. METHODS: We analyzed data from 15,393 older adults in t

Empty nest but better off? Association between empty nest status and cognitive function among older adults with chronic diseases in rural China.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of cognitive impairment poses substantial risks to older adults, particularly those with chronic diseases. While existing studies have examined the connection between the empty nest phenomenon and cognitive function, few have attempted to consider endogeneity issues within this relationship, with limited attention given to older adults with chronic diseases. This study investigates the impact of empty nest status on cognitive function among rural Chinese older adults with chronic diseases and explores the possible mechanisms underlying this effect. Machine learning approach to examine the intersectional association of social identities and circumstance with current cigarette smoking among US adults.

Little is known about how the intersections of social identities and circumstances exacerbate cigarette smoking disparities among US adults. We analyzed data from the 1995-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (n = 1 496 458). Participants reported current cigarette smoking status (smoking cigarettes some days or every day vs not smoking at all) and 13 social identities (eg, race, ethnicity, Hispanic heritage) and circumstances (eg, education, marital status). We applied a statistical-learning boosting algorithm that allows interactions of these identities and circumstan

Social support: its structure and impact on marital disruption.

Availability of social support has been hypothesized to play a role in influencing adjustment to marital disruption either directly or by moderating the debilitating effects of stress. Yet previous research has not adequately conceptualized or measured the nature and availability of social support. In an effort to learn more about the structure and impact of social support as it relates to marital disruption, 50 newly separated men and women were interviewed at 2 months and again at 8 months after their separations. The structure of social support was found to include (a) several important sou

The psychosocial context of Black women's health.

Researchers have demonstrated that Black women exhibit a disproportionate risk of ill health. We examined the relationship between psychosocial factors, including economic status, race-based social inequality, gender-based violence, and the health status of 323 Black women between the ages of 18 and 65. Black women from a community sample completed a health survey with open-ended responses. Results indicated that women in lower economic groups are more likely to be treated for allergies (p = < .05) and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID; p = < .01). Women who experienced increased incidents of r

[Hormones and aggression].

This work is a review about psychoendocrinologic aspects of aggressive behavior. We have considered two approaches, the classical view focused on hormonal influences in the regulation of aggression and the most recent view which accounts for the influences of aggressive behavior and social status on hormonal secretion. In this review we differentiate the organizational from the activational effects. The main conclusions are referred to the gonadal steroids effects both organization and activation of the neural subtract of aggression. Among them it seems that aromatizable androgens have the mos…

The Effect of Social Isolation on Sarcopenia: A Longitudinal Study among the Middle-Aged and Older Population in China.

INTRODUCTION: Although social isolation is associated with premature death and somatic and mental diseases, evidence of its long-term effect on sarcopenia is scarce. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal association between social isolation and possible sarcopenia. METHODS: We extracted baseline and 4-year follow-up data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and included participants aged 45 years or above. Social isolation was measured by factors including living alone, marital status, frequency of contact with adult children and friends, and participation in social

Effect of extended-release naltrexone (XR-NTX) on quality of life in alcohol-dependent patients.

BACKGROUND: Extended-release naltrexone (XR-NTX) is a once-a-month injectable formulation for the treatment of alcohol dependence previously shown to reduce drinking and heavy drinking relative to placebo (Garbutt et al., 2005). A 24-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study established the efficacy and safety of XR-NTX in this patient population. In this report, the effect of XR-NTX on quality of life (QOL) was examined. METHODS: Alcohol-dependent patients were randomly assigned to receive XR-NTX 380 mg (N = 205), XR-NTX 190 mg (N = 210), or placebo (N = 209), combined with a

Geriatric oral health issues in India.

An overview of the demographics and oral health status of the elderly population of India is presented. India is a vast country with a population of one billion people. Of this, people older than 60 years constitute 7.6%, which in actual number is 76 million. There are several factors that affect the oral health of elderly. The dentist:population ratio is 1:27,000 in urban areas and 1:300,000 in rural areas, whereas 80% of the elderly population reside in rural India. Forty per cent of the elderly live below the poverty line and 73% are illiterate. Ninety per cent of the elderly have no social

Length of hospitalization on a short-term therapeutic community. A multivariate study by sex across time.

Patient length of hospitalization was examined in a private short-term therapeutic community unit using a longitudinal, multimethod, -ultivariate approach, with data analyzed separately by patient sex. Patient data were entered into stepwise linear regression analyses for weeks 1, 2, and 4 of an average seven-week hospitalization for male and female patients separately. Results for men were not specifically replicated among the women. Longer-staying men were diagnosed more frequently as "personality disorders," tended to be somewhat aloof, perceived the ward as encouraging denial, facade, orde

The social determinants of depression in elderly Korean immigrants in Canada: does acculturation matter?

Depression in old age significantly decreases the quality of life and may lead to serious consequences, such as suicide. Existing literature indicates that elderly Korean immigrants may experience higher levels of depression than other racial ethnic group elders. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate factors that influence depression among older Korean immigrants in Toronto. A total of 148 participants, ages 60 years or older (mean age = 74.01, SD = 8.24), completed face-to-face interviews in Korean language. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted by adding variable

Impact of vitamin B6 status on psychological distress in a longitudinal study of HIV-1 infection.

OBJECTIVE: Inadequate vitamin B6 status has been associated with altered neuropsychiatric function, possibly through its effect on the metabolism of neurotransmitters, including serotonin (5-HT). The present eighteen month longitudinal study evaluated the relationship between vitamin B6 status and psychological distress in HIV-1 infected individuals, controlling for the influence of negative life events, social support and coping style. METHOD: Biochemical measurements of nutritional status, and dietary intake evaluations were obtained in HIV-1 seropositive homosexual men, (at baseline: CDC S

Transcranial direct current stimulation suggests a causal role of the medial prefrontal cortex in learning social hierarchy.

Social hierarchies can be inferred through observational learning of social relationships between individuals. Yet, little is known about the causal role of specific brain regions in learning hierarchies. Here, using transcranial direct current stimulation, we show a causal role of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in learning social versus non-social hierarchies. In a Training phase, participants acquired knowledge about social and non-social hierarchies by trial and error. During a Test phase, they were presented with two items from hierarchies that were never encountered together, requiri
