Five confirmed cases of canine blastomycosis occurred over the 10-month period of December 1983 to September 1984 in a south-eastern Wisconsin colony of 30 dogs maintained for sled competition. Contrary to other published reports of canine blastomycosis, the sex-specific attack rates were higher among females than males. The sudden death occurred of a captive Estuarine crocodile hatchling (Crocodylus porosus). On autopsy, granuloma-like lesions were seen in the liver, left lung and spleen, and branching, septate fungal hyphae were observed in sections of liver and spleen. The fungus isolated from the liver showed characteristics of both Paecilomyces lilacinus and Paecilomyces marquandii but was closer to the former species. This is apparently the first report of the isolation of this fungus from a reptile in Australia.

Coccidioides immitis was isolated from lesions in the lung of a Sonoran Gopher snake, Pituophis melanoleucus affinis. A lactophenol cotton blue mount of a fungal colony grown on Sabouraud's agar revealed coarse, branching, septate hyphae with alternating thick-walled arthroconidia. Seventy-one patients with oropharyngeal candidosis received treatment with fluconazole given as a single 50 mg capsule once daily. Of these patients 61 were HIV-antibody positive. Candidosis had been present in nearly all patients for a least one month prior to fluconazole treatment. The duration of daily therapy was 5-20 days and in many cases this was followed by a period of maintenance treatment using 50 mg fluconazole every 48 h. Of several media tested for their ability to induce asexual reproduction in confirmed or suspected isolates of Mortierella wolfii obtained from cattle in various geographical locations, only silage extract agar worked consistently and rapidly. Its use should provide a simple reliable culturing procedure to assist with identification of clinical isolates of this fungus. Temperature growth response curves and electrophoretic patterns of soluble protein extracts of these isolates with characteristic morphological features of M. wolfii indicate substantial variation amongst them.

Seven of 73 mongrel dogs in Rio de Janeiro gave positive results in skin tests with a polysaccharide mycelial antigen from Histoplasma capsulatum. Five of the positive reactors were necropsied and four of them had disseminated histoplasmosis proved by histopathology and culture. Four healthy puppies exposed for 10 min to soil at the site of a known outbreak of histoplasmosis developed symptoms and died 7-14 days after exposure with fulminant histoplasmosis. These experiments show the value of dogs as epidemiological indicator of histoplasmosis and as experimental models for the disease.

Adult BALB/c mice of both sexes were infected intranasally with 10(6) viable P. brasiliensis conidia. Animals were sacrificed at intervals up to 6 months and studied by histopathology and organ cultures. A urease-antibody conjugate was used in an enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) for the detection of antibodies in blastomycosis. A Blastomyces dermatitidis immunodiffusion antigen was used as the reference antigen in a solid phase indirect ELISA procedure and the endpoints were determined visually. Arthrospores of Trichophyton mentagrophytes were inoculated on to the plantar part of a guinea pig foot by a newly devised non-abrasive method. Twenty-nine patients with mycologically proven tinea pedis were randomly allocated to oral treatment with either ketoconazole 200 mg daily or griseofulvin 1 g daily for a period of up to 8 weeks. Mycological cure rate at 4 weeks was 33% for ketoconazole and 29% for griseofulvin, and at 8 weeks was 53% and 57% respectively. The efficacy of both drugs in the treatment of interdigital tinea pedis is similar, and is considerably lower than that found with topical imidazole preparations where cure rates of over 70% are generally expected.

A hyphomycete isolated from a pale-grain eumycetoma in an indian male patient is described as a species of a new form-genus, Polycytella hominis. The fungus is characterized by elongate multiseptate conidia in which only the apical compartment becomes thick-walled and retains viable cytoplasm. The appearance of P. hominis in the host tissues is described and compared with other pale-grain eumycetomas.

A case of systemic zygomycosis caused by Apophysomyces elegans in a 56-year-old man is described. The left kidney and the bladder showed presence of broad, nonseptate-to-infrequently septate hyphae in both the bladder lesion and in the septic kidney. Surgical debridement and treatment with amphotericin B cured the infection. No underlying immune defect was ever demonstrated, and the patient was not hyperglycemic or acidotic at any time. This zygomycetous fungus closely resembles Absidia corymbifera, but is distinguished by its distinctive morphological features.

Male ICR mice were challenged intracerebrally with endospores of Coccidioides immitis and then treated with water (control), fluconazole, amphotericin B (Fungizone), or ketoconazole (Nizoral). All three drugs markedly prolonged survival, and all three drugs lowered brain colony counts of C. immitis. Survival of mice treated orally with fluconazole at the high dose was longer than in the ketoconazole treated group. Amphotericin B was more efficacious than fluconazole. Further investigations are needed to determine the efficacy of fluconazole in treatment of coccidioidal meningitis.

The survival of Blastomyces dermatitidis with markedly reduced population, in the gastrointestinal tract and faeces of Rhinopoma hardwickei orally infected with 2.5 X 10(5) colony forming units of the fungus, is reported. B. dermatitidis was cultured from the stomach, intestine and faeces up to 16-24 h and from rectum up to 48 h post infection. The results demonstrate that orally infected R. hardwickei hardwickei bats transiently shed B. dermatitidis through their faeces but the significance of this route of environmental dissemination requires further evaluation.

A case of tinea pedis caused by a dual infection with Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum canis is reported. It is of particular interest because infections of the toe webs caused by M. canis are uncommon and the combination of T. rubrum and M. canis has not been reported. In addition, a marked difference in response to treatment with an imidazole (bifonazole) was observed.

This report describes two patients with subacute pulmonary mucormycosis who died of pulmonary hemorrhage. Both patients had diabetes mellitus, but neither patient had the typical fulminant illness associated with this infection. The subacute progressive illness seen in these patients is unusual and suggests the need for aggressive diagnostic and therapeutic measures in patients who are at risk for this infection.
