Land use shapes soil organic matter stabilization and chemistry in tropical soils: insights from density fractionation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Although land use influences on soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics are well recognized, stabilization and chemical components of SOM under diverse land uses in tropical soils are not fully understood. Herein, we aimed at investigating SOM stabilization and chemical components across contrasting land uses in tropical soils. Soil samples were collected from seven representative land uses: forest, pasture, corn plantation, sugarcane plantation, cassava plantation, orchard, and abandoned land. SOM was physically isolated into free particulate SOM (fSOM), occluded light SOM (oSOM), weakly bound SOM…

Occurrence of nitro- and oxy-PAHs in agricultural soils in eastern China and excess lifetime cancer risks from human exposure through soil ingestion.

The quality of agricultural soil is vital to human health, however soil contamination is a severe problem in China. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been found to be among the major soil contaminants in China. PAH derivatives could be more toxic but their measurements in soils are extremely limited. This study reports levels, spatial distributions and compositions of 11 nitrated (nPAHs) and 4 oxygenated PAHs (oPAHs) in agricultural soils covering 26 provinces in eastern China to fill the data gap. The excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) from the exposure to them in addition to 21 pa…

Methodological problems in determining TCAA in soils-the discovery of novel natural trichloroacetyl containing compounds and their interference with a common method for determining TCAA in soil and vegetation.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) is a pollutant with several sources and is also formed naturally in soil. We show that almost all investigated environmental compartments (soil, soil water, groundwater, spruce needles and throughfall, but not rain) contain compounds, which make false positives in the thermal decarboxylation method often used for determination of TCAA in environmental samples. The compounds are dominating quantitatively over TCAA in soil, soil water and groundwater, while TCAA is dominating in needle and throughfall samples. The compounds behave differently from TCAA with regard to …

Predicting Cadmium and Arsenic Accumulation and Soil-Exposure Health Risks in Agricultural Soils Below the Risk Screening Values: A Refined Flux Balance Model.

Less attention has been paid to soils with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) below agricultural land risk screening values, even though they continue to accumulate these elements. In this study, four typical areas in Ningxia were selected to determine the concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in 176 samples collected from 130 sampling sites across seven matrices. A refined mass balance model was developed by partitioning irrigation input into suspended-solid and supernatant phases and crop removal into grain and straw components. The model was used to analyze the contributions of var…

Linking soils and human health: geospatial analysis of ground-sampled soil data in relation to community-level podoconiosis data in North West Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a form of leg swelling, which arises when individuals are exposed over time to red clay soil formed from alkaline volcanic rock. The exact causal agent of the disease is unknown. This study investigates associations between podoconiosis disease data and ground-sampled soil data from North West Cameroon. METHODS: The mineralogy and elemental concentrations were measured in the soil samples and the data were spatially interpolated. Mean soil values were calculated from a 3 km buffer region around the prevalence data points to perform statistical analysis. Analysis in…

Amino acid value-added urea reduces fertilizer-derived nitrogen loss in paddy soil by enhancing plant uptake, soil retention, and microbial turnover: Evidence from 15N tracing.

High nitrogen inputs have led to improved agricultural productivity, but have also caused a range of environmental issues. How to promote th … s contributed by N leaching. The increase of fertilizer nitrogen in plant uptake (33.6 ± 18.2%) and soil residues (21.8-28.4%) were directly related to fertilizer nitrogen losses and are essential factors to explain the decline in N losses. Moreover, amino acid-enhanced urea significantly increased soil N residues by promoting the utilization of fertil …

Preparation and characterization of high-ash coal slime-based soil amendment as well as investigations of its adsorption performance and mechanisms towards heavy metals in soil.

In this study, high-ash coal slime-based mineral soil amendment (MSA) was prepared via the hydrothermal method using high-ash coal slime as raw material, supplemented with activator calcium oxide and additive KOH solution. After hydrothermal treatment at 230 °C for 5 h, the original crystalline phase (quartz and kaolinite) of the high-ash slime was completely transformed into hydrotalcite zeolite, tobermorite, and silicate of potassium aluminosilicate, which has the largest specific surface area. The adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ was adherent to the kinetic equation of secondary adsorption and F…

Efficacy of chitosan-coated textile waste biochar applied to Cd-polluted soil for reducing Cd mobility in soil and its distribution in moringa (Moringa oleifera L.).

Soil pollution with Cd has promoted serious concerns for medicinal plant quality. Amending Cd-polluted soils with textile waste biochar (TWB) coated with natural polymers can lower Cd bioavailability in them and reduce associated environmental and human health risks. In this study, we explored the impacts of solely applied TWB, chitosan (CH), their mix (TWB + CH) and TWB coated with CH (TBC) in Cd-polluted soil on Cd distribution in moringa (Moringa oleifera L.) shoots and roots as well as plant-available Cd in soil. Moreover, amendments effects on plant growth, dietary quality, and antioxidat…

Ecosystem-specific patterns in soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) biodegradability: Validated by a multi-property persistence index for linking DOM and soil organic matter intrinsic characteristics.

Soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) bio-stability is critical for understanding carbon (C) cycling and ecosystem functioning. Existing approaches for estimating DOM biodegradability are constrained by the need to balance accuracy, scalability, and cost-effectiveness, given DOM's chemical complexity and methodological limitations. Soil DOM is widely used as a proxy for soil organic matter (SOM) persistence, yet direct empirical validation remains scarce. Here, we applied an integrative index, the persistence index (PI), calculated using ecosystem multifunctionality frameworks based on multiple …

Assessment of cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) based method for the extraction of soil-transmitted helminth DNAs from stools for molecular dagnostic of soil-transmitted helminthiasis.

Although several protocols were developed to extract DNA for soil-transmitted helminthiasis diagnostic, amplifying these extracts remains challenging due to DNA polymerase inhibitors. This study aimed to assess a DNA extraction method for efficient detection of soil-transmitted helminth species by determining stool mass and the type of DNA polymerase that can be used for this extraction method. For this study, 141 stool samples harbouring soil-transmitted eggs and 50 samples without egg were obtained from school-aged children of Makenene in the Centre region of Cameroon. DNA was extracted from…

Enhancing Global Cropland Soil Organic Carbon Stability Through Integrated Management Practices.

The ratio of mineral-associated organic carbon to particulate organic carbon (MAOC:POC) can serve as an indicator for assessing relative soil organic carbon (SOC) stability, which is closely linked to climate change mitigation and sustainable agriculture. However, the potential for enhancing relative SOC stability in global croplands, and the corresponding optimized integrated management strategies, remain unclear. Here, we developed a machine learning model that captured the interactions among cropland management practices, soil, and climate factors using a compiled global data set of 2,029 f…

Associations among soil microbial and plant richness across global terrestrial biomes.

Soil microbiomes play a crucial role in terrestrial ecosystems by influencing plant diversity and ecosystem functions, yet global patterns linking soil microbial and plant species richness remain unclear. Here we employed machine learning models integrating environmental variables to map global richness patterns of plants, bacteria, and fungi across terrestrial biomes and examined their associations. We found distinct biogeographical distributions and high diversity regions: plant richness peaked in tropical forests, soil bacterial richness was highest toward arid and transitional zones, and s…

Extracellular DNA Alters Detection of Subtle Bacterial Responses to Soil Rewetting.

Microbial communities are often characterized using DNA-based sequencing, but these approaches also capture extracellular DNA (exDNA) released from dead cells, potentially altering inference about microbial responses to environmental change. This may be especially important during pulse disturbances, such as soil drying-rewetting, which can increase microbial mortality and transient necromass pools. We assessed whether exDNA altered inference about bacterial responses to drying-rewetting (an 80 mm simulated rainfall event following a 28-day drought) in conventionally tilled corn and perennial …

An interpretable soil-pH suitability index for arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal genera.

Soil pH is among the most consistent abiotic axes structuring arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal communities, yet the pH dependence of individual taxa has not been turned into an interpretable instrument that resolves preference at the genus level and maps globally. HESI (Hydrogenic Edaphic Suitability Index) is a fuzzy-set trapezoidal pH-membership function for twelve Glomeromycotina genera whose four parameters are read from binned presence-rate profiles in GlobalFungi by an explicit rule rather than fitted, then scored on an independent SoilGrids pH surface. Under spatial block cross-valida…

Soil iron modulates beneficial maize microbiome feedbacks in rotations with wheat.

BACKGROUND: Plants change their surrounding soil microbiome by root exudates and these conditioned microbiomes impact the performance of the present as well as the next plant generation as for example in crop rotations. The big challenge is that such 'microbiome feedbacks' are highly context-dependent, i.e. they vary in strength and direction dependent on the local soil environment - of which the driving factor(s) remain unknown. Including maize in crop rotations involves benzoxazinoids (BXs), which are exuded from roots and alter the soil microbiome, which in turn affects growth and defence o…
