Transmission electron microscopy investigation of colloids and particles from landfill leachates.

Leachates collected at two (active and closed) municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills were examined for colloids and particles by transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, selected area electron diffraction and for the chemical compositions of the filtrates after the filtration to 0.1 µm and ultrafiltration to 1 kDa (~ 1 nm). Six groups of colloids/particles in the range 5 nm to 5 µm were determined (in decreasing order of abundance): carbonates, phyllosilicates (clay minerals and micas), quartz, Fe-oxides, organics and others (salts, phosphates). Inorganic colloids/part…

Increased bioavailability of mercury in the lagoons of Lomb, Togo: the possible role of dredging.

Surface sediments of the lagoons of Lomé, Togo, were analyzed for mercury, methylmercury, and trace elements. Concentrations were greater than typical for natural lagoon sediments, and with greater variability within the Eastern lagoon compared to the Western one. The Eastern lagoon is larger and has been dredged in the past, while the Western lagoon, which also receives major waste inputs, has not been dredged and shows less tidal flushing. Accordingly, one naturally believes that the Eastern lagoon is cleaner and probably safe to use due to its natural resources, including fishes to eat. Une

Genotoxicity of leachates from highly polluted lowland river sediments destined for disposal in landfill.

The Matanza-Riachuelo is one of the most polluted rivers of Latin America. The complex chemical mixture of pollutants discharged into the river is accumulated in the river sediments. In this paper, Matanza-Riachuelo river sediment composition and genotoxicity were tested in order to develop a cost-effective, environmentally sound option for disposal and management of contaminated dredged materials. Sampling was performed in a rural area, in a solid waste dumpsite and also in an urban and industrial area. The concentrations of total heavy metals increased from the upper basin to the lower basin…

Caffeine metabolism during cultivation of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) with spent coffee grounds.

In coffee-producing countries, waste products from coffee production are useful substrates for cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus. This species is relatively easy to grow, coffee waste substrates are readily available and the mushroom fruiting bodies are a valuable source of nutrition and income. In developed countries, cultivation of P. ostreatus on spent coffee grounds (SCG) from coffee consumption is a novel way to recycle this urban waste product. Here, we studied the effect of SCG and caffeine on growth of a commercial strain of P. ostreatus in liquid and solid cultures, and on a commerci

Cerium-Modified TiO2 Nanomaterials Derived From Upcycled Coffee Ground Waste for Photocatalytic Oxidation and Hydrogen Production via Photoreforming.

The valorization of spent coffee ground wastes to prepare advanced materials offers a promising pathway toward sustainable materials engineering. In this work, spent coffee grounds were valorized by their utilization as a template for the synthesis of Ce-loaded TiO2 to be used as photocatalysts. The synthesis in the presence of the bio-derived sacrificial template in the absence of solvent promote a hierarchical porosity and surface area and an intimate contact between Ce and Ti precursors to improve the photocatalytic activity of the obtained composite material. Pure TiO2 is made up of nanopa

From Waste to Value: Solubility and Dissolution Enhancement of Bioactive Extracts from Olive Leaves Using Poloxamers.

The European Union, producing over 2.5 billion tons of waste annually, has prompted the European Parliament to implement legal measures and encourage the shift towards a circular economy. Millions of tons of biowaste from olive plant leaves are generated annually, resulting in environmental and economic challenges. To address this, the biowaste of olive leaves was valorized, resulting in the extraction of valuable components, triterpenes and polyphenols, which hold potential pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic applications. Our research involved the formulation of a triterpene extract (TTP70, 70

Hydrolysis of iron and chromium fluorides: mechanism and kinetics.

Fluoride complexes of metallic ions are one of the main problems when processing industrial effluents with high content of fluoride anion. The most important case is derived from pickling treatment of stainless steel, which is performed with HNO3/HF mixtures to remove oxides scale formed over the metal surface. Waste from this process, spent pickling liquor, must be treated for recovering metallic and acid content. Conventional treatments produce a final effluent with high quantity of fluoride complexes of iron and chromium. This work proposes a hydrolysis treatment of these solid metal fluori

Silage intake, rumination and pseudo-rumination activity in sheep studied by radiography and jaw movement recordings.

1. The eating and ruminating activity of four rams given long-chopped silage ad lib. in two daily meals was studied by jaw movement recordings. The events of rumination and pseudo-rumination were observed by fluoroscopy and by cineradiography. 2. The rate of eating was highest at the beginning of the main meal and then declined gradually. 3. The silage intake level was low. 4. The swallowed silage did not accumulate at the cardiac region but was forced into the dorsal sac of the rumen by the contractions of the reticulum and cranial sac of the rumen. For regurgitation the solid particles had t

Beyond the digester: facility-wide greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions and energy performance of hybrid anaerobic-aerobic organic waste composting.

This study presents the first comprehensive facility-wide assessment of greenhouse-gas emissions and energy balance at a full-scale hybrid anaerobic-aerobic composting (AC) facility integrating high-solids anaerobic digestion with aerobic stabilization. Multi-season, phase-resolved monitoring was conducted using dynamic flux chambers for CO2, N2O, NH3, H2S, and NMVOCs, and UAV-based flux-curtain surveys for CH4, revealed distinct gas-specific emission patterns across operational stages. CH4, CO2, and H2S emissions were highest during curing, while NH3, N2O, and NMVOCs peaked during excavation,

Phosphorus release and realignment in anaerobic digestion of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment sludge - Masking effects from high ammonium.

Waste activated sludge (WAS) is a significant phosphorus (P) repository, and there is a growing interest in P recovery from WAS. Typically, the commercial technology for treating WAS involves thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) coupled with anaerobic digestion (AD). However, there is ongoing debate regarding the transformation and distribution of P throughout this process. To address this, a long-term THP-AD process was operated in this study to comprehensively investigate P transformation and distribution. The results revealed that a substantial biodegradation of dissolved organic nitrogen

Freezing/thawing effects on anaerobic digestion of mixed sewage sludge.

This study examined the effects of freezing/thawing disintegration on the characteristics of mixed (primary and waste) sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants. It also assessed the effects of freezing/thawing on anaerobic digestion, and its consequences for biogas production and digester supernatant quality. Freezing/thawing caused a decrease of more than 10% in the total chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), volatile solids (VS) and total solids (TS). A simultaneous doubling of the soluble COD and volatile fatty acids (VFA) occurred. Release of nitrogen and phosp

Solid-State Fermented Discarded Dates as a Functional Feed Ingredient: Effects on Meat Quality, Fatty Acid Profile, and Essential Amino Acid Composition.

Palm fruits are produced extensively in tropical and subtropical regions and consumed worldwide. However, over 20% of the total yield is discarded due to inferior quality, resulting in significant agricultural waste and economic loss. To mitigate this challenge and enable the safe valorization of discarded dates (DD) in animal feeding systems, this study employed solid-state fermentation (SSF) to upgrade the nutritional quality of DD and evaluated its potential as a functional feed ingredient for goats. Twenty-four male goats (6 months old; initial body weight 25.86 ± 0.25 kg) were randomly as

Productivity evaluation, multi-scale characterisation, and safety assessment of biochar derived from green and woody agricultural biomass in Qatar.

Qatar produces approximately 2 million tons of agricultural biomass waste annually. Less than 20% is currently recycled or valorized, mainly through limited composting, landfilling, and, in some cases, open burning. This study presents a systematic production and multi-scale characterization of biochar derived from local mixed green agricultural waste (GAGW) and woody agricultural waste (WAGW), providing a characterization-based foundation to inform their potential integration into the energy-water-food (EWF) nexus of arid regions. Each feedstock was analyzed for moisture content (MC), volatil

Impact of declining oxygen conditions on metal(loid) release from partially oxidized waste rock.

The best available technology for preventing the formation of acid drainage water from the sulfidic waste rock at mine closure aims to limit the oxygen access to the waste. There is, however, a concern that contaminants associated with secondary minerals become remobilized due to changing environmental conditions. Metal(loid) mobility from partially oxidized sulfidic waste rock under declining and limited oxygen conditions was studied in unsaturated column experiments. The concentrations of sulfate and metal(loid)s peaked coincidently with declining oxygen conditions from 100 to < 5 sat-% and

Removal of Pharmaceutical residues by ferrate(VI).

BACKGROUND: Pharmaceuticals and their metabolites are inevitably emitted into the waters. The adverse environmental and human health effects of pharmaceutical residues in water could take place under a very low concentration range; from several µg/L to ng/L. These are challenges to the global water industries as there is no unit process specifically designed to remove these pollutants. An efficient technology is thus sought to treat these pollutants in water and waste water. METHODOLOGY/MAJOR RESULTS: A novel chemical, ferrate, was assessed using a standard jar test procedure for the removal
