Analytical Evaluation of Wet and Dry Mechanochemical Syntheses of Calcium-Deficient Hydroxyapatite Containing Zinc Using X-ray Diffractometry and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Calcium-deficient zinc-containing calcium phosphate (ZnAP), which has sustained zinc release properties that are effective for treating osteoporosis, can be efficiently synthesized as a biomaterial through wet grinding. To elucidate the physicochemical mechanism of these mechanochemical syntheses, ground products were obtained from the starting material powder (S-CP), consisting of calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate (CHPD), calcium oxide (CaO), and zinc oxide (ZnO), by wet and dry grinding for 0-3 h in a centrifugal ball mill. The ground S-CP products were analyzed using powder X-ray diffrac

Grey-box modeling and hypothesis testing of functional near-infrared spectroscopy-based cerebrovascular reactivity to anodal high-definition tDCS in healthy humans.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been shown to evoke hemodynamics response; however, the mechanisms have not been investigated systematically using systems biology approaches. Our study presents a grey-box linear model that was developed from a physiologically detailed multi-compartmental neurovascular unit model consisting of the vascular smooth muscle, perivascular space, synaptic space, and astrocyte glial cell. Then, model linearization was performed on the physiologically detailed nonlinear model to find appropriate complexity (Akaike information criterion) to fit functi

Brain monitoring using near-infrared spectroscopy to predict outcome after cardiac arrest: a novel phenotype in a rat model of cardiac arrest.

Improving neurological outcomes after cardiac arrest (CA) is the most important patient-oriented outcome for CA research. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) enables a non-invasive, real-time measurement of regional cerebral oxygen saturation. Here, we demonstrate a novel, non-invasive measurement using NIRS, termed modified cerebral oximetry index (mCOx), to distinguish the severity of brain injury after CA. We aimed to test the feasibility of this method to predict neurological outcome after asphyxial CA in rats. Our results suggest that mCOx is feasible shortly after resuscitation and can pro

Does Early Cerebral Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Monitoring Predict Outcome in Neonates with Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy? A Systematic Review of Diagnostic Test Accuracy.

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains one of the top 10 contributors to the global burden of disease. Early objective biomarkers are required. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) may provide a valuable insight into cerebral perfusion and metabolism. We aimed to determine whether early NIRS monitoring (<6 h of age) can predict outcome as defined by grade of encephalopathy, brain MRI findings, and/or neurodevelopmental outcome at 1-2 years in infants with HIE. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and The Cochrane Library databases (July 2019). Studie

Predicting postoperative delirium and postoperative cognitive decline with combined intraoperative electroencephalogram monitoring and cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy in patients undergoing cardiac interventions.

Studies have associated electroencephalogram (EEG) suppression with postoperative delirium (POD) and postoperative cognitive decline (POCD). Otherwise, improving cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (rScO2) seems beneficial. No study has evaluated the impact of EEG suppression and decreased rScO2 on the incidence of POD and POCD when the intraoperative management of patients is performed with a depth-of-anesthesia (DOA) monitor and a cerebral oximetry. In this prospective study patients undergoing cardiac interventions were monitored with the NeuroSENSE® DOA monitor and bilateral cerebral oximetr

Near-infrared spectroscopy might be a useful tool for predicting the risk of vascular complications after pediatric liver transplants: Two case reports.

In patients that have undergone liver transplants, a postoperative reduction in the blood flow of the liver graft represents a critical complication. We recently encountered an interesting phenomenon; that is, we found that the rSO2 level of the liver graft, as measured by NIRS, drops in patients that subsequently require an emergency liver biopsy. An 8-month-old female and an 8-month-old male underwent living donor liver transplants for biliary atresia. In both cases, a reduction in rSO2 was detected before an emergency liver biopsy was required. As a result of biopsy examinations, both patie

Intraoperative renal near-infrared spectroscopy indicates developing acute kidney injury in infants undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass in infants. Renal near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is used to evaluate regional oximetry in a non-invasive continuous real-time fashion, and reflects tissue perfusion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between renal oximetry and development of AKI in the operative and post-operative setting in infants undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. METHODS: In this prospective study, we enrolled 59 infants undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery for congenita

Exploring frontal asymmetry using functional near-infrared spectroscopy: a preliminary study of the effects of social anxiety during interaction and performance tasks.

Preliminary studies examining brain function associated with social anxiety suggest the possibility of right-sided prefrontal activation associated with phobic stimulation. Although most existing neuroimaging techniques preclude participants from engaging in ecologically valid social tasks during assessment, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a promising new technique that permits such assessment. The present study investigated the utility of the fNIRS procedure and explored frontal asymmetry during in vivo social challenge tasks among female undergraduate students who scored in

Simultaneous determination of mercury, lead and cadmium ions in water using near-infrared spectroscopy with preconcentration by thiol-functionalized magnesium phyllosilicate clay.

Analysis of metal ions in environment is of great importance for evaluating the risk of heavy metal to public health and ecological safety. A method for simultaneous determination of metal ions in water samples was developed by using adsorption preconcentration and near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (NIRDRS). A high capacity adsorbent of thiol-functionalized magnesium phyllosilicate, named Mg-MTMS, was prepared by co-condensation for preconcentration of Hg(2+), Pb(2+) and Cd(2+) in aqueous solutions. After adsorbing the analytes onto the adsorbent, NIRDRS was measured and PLS model

Frontal dysfunction during a cognitive task in drug-naive patients with panic disorder as investigated by multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy imaging.

The present study investigated oxygenated ([oxy-Hb]) and deoxygenated ([deoxy-Hb]) hemoglobin concentration changes during the performance of a word fluency task in the frontal region of five drug-naive patients with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia and in 33 age-, sex-, and task performance-matched healthy volunteers by using multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The left inferior frontal [oxy-Hb] changes during performance of the task in patients with panic disorder were significantly smaller than those of healthy controls. This pilot study suggests the possibility that

A comparative study of COVID-19 point-of-care detection across human biofluids using MEMS-based near-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning.

This study explores the use of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in the 1.3–2.6 μm wavelength range, employing a handheld miniaturized microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based spectrometer for the rapid, non-invasive detection of COVID-19 from various biofluids. A total of 238 samples—including nasopharyngeal (NSP) swabs, nasal swabs, and saliva—from both COVID-19 positive and negative individuals are analysed. Machine learning algorithms process the spectral data to develop predictive models for the disease classification. Models based on a single biofluid achieve detection accuracies betwe

Anesthetic Management of Asymptomatic Innominate Artery Compression Syndrome in an Elderly Patient Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Bilateral Radial Arterial Pressure Monitoring.

Innominate artery compression syndrome (IACS) is rare in adults and poses anesthetic challenges, as airway manipulation may exacerbate tracheal compression or compromise cerebral perfusion. Peri-intubation cerebral oxygenation in this context has rarely been reported. We describe the case of an 82-year-old woman with incidentally detected, asymptomatic IACS and moderate tracheal stenosis who underwent robot-assisted rectal surgery under general anesthesia. During fiberoptic-guided tracheal intubation, bilateral radial arterial pressures and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) were continuously m

Impact of Lipid-Rich Plaque on Per-Vessel Outcomes in Patients Treated with Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Intravascular Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

Lipid-rich plaque detected by near-infrared spectroscopy combined with intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) may be related to adverse outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The relationship between NIRS-derived lipid burden and target vessel failure (TVF)-particularly non-target lesion failure (TLF) TVF-remains unclear. We retrospectively analyzed 151 consecutive patients (163 lesions) who underwent NIRS-IVUS-guided drug-eluting stent implantation at a single center. The maximum 4-mm lipid core burden index (MaxLCBI4mm) was measured before and after stent implantation. Primary

Effects of virtual reality eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy for adolescents with major depressive disorder: a functional Near-Infrared spectroscopy study.

Virtual Reality-based Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (VR-EMDR) has been proven effective in treating adults with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, its effectiveness in treating adolescents with MDD is less studied, and its underlying neuroimaging mechanism remains unknown. Sixty-eight adolescents with MDD and 29 adolescent healthy control (HC) were recruited. Adolescents with MDD were randomly allocated to the intervention group and the wait-list control group. The intervention group received 12-session of VR-EMDR, while another group received no psychotherapy. W

Validated Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Chemometric Modelling for Rapid Quantification of Essential Oil Yield and α/β-Santalol in Santalum Album L.

The sandalwood industry remains constrained by destructive, time-intensive assays for essential oil (EO) yield, composition, moisture content, and wood fraction, which limit real-time decision-making. We report a unified near-infrared spectroscopy-artificial intelligence (NIRS-AI) platform for non-destructive analytics across the Santalum album L. value chain. Reflectance and transmittance spectra from solid matrices (disks, logs, chips, and powders), oils, ethanol extracts, and CID-derived emulsions were acquired using benchtop (400-2500 nm) and portable (900-1700 nm) spectrometers and calibr

Cortical Brain Activation During Robot-Assisted Gait in Humans With Acute and Chronic Spinal Cord Injury: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

Most treatments being developed to regain motor function following spinal cord injury (SCI) presuppose that brain motor functions remain intact. To examine this assumption, this study aims to analyze residual neurological functions during assisted robotic gait in individuals with SCI comparing blocks (gait × resting), time after SCI (acute × chronic), injury level (paraplegic × tetraplegic), and ASIA scale (ASIA C × D). The hemodynamic functions were analyzed using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in 23 individuals (11 acute, 12 chronic; ASIA Impairment Scale grade C: 10, D: 13; p
