INTRODUCTION: Challenges in reading and speech commonly co-occur. For example, adults and children with clinically elevated levels of speech disfluencies, indicating a speech fluency disorder, are more likely to have a reading disorder.
METHOD: The aim of this study was to explore the connection between reading and speech difficulties in adult literacy learners (ALLs). We examined the relationship between phonemic decoding, speech disfluencies, and silent reading fluency in ALLs. Participants included 234 English-speaking ALLs enrolled in adult literacy programs in the USA and Canada.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation is to describe the communication profile of children with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome from infancy through school age and to examine the influence of other medical aspects, such as palate anomalies, learning disorders, and cardiac defects of the syndrome to communication.
METHODS: Seventy-nine children were examined using standardized tests of speech and language and perceptual measures of resonance and voice.
RESULTS: Results show significant delay in emergence of speech and language milestones with delay/disorder in speech-language processes per

INTRODUCTION: Phonological analysis is a system for assessing children's speech that was introduced by Ingram in 1976. Despite being acknowledged as one of the essential elements for understanding speech therapy intervention in speech disorders, it is not a wholly generalised practice due to the difficulties involved and the shortage of standardised instruments for performing it.
DEVELOPMENT: Here, we examine the impact of phonological analysis on speech therapy intervention and the history of the instruments that have been developed over the years to perform it, both in English and in Spanis…

Acquired and developmental apraxia of speech (AOS and DAS) are defined as disorders of the transition from an abstract phonological code into motor commands. However, the natural course of these disorders differs substantially because of the fundamental difference in the developmental stage at which the apraxia expresses itself. In normal and pathological development alike, development of language and speech is an interactive process, involving speech motor control, perception, and psycholinguistic processes. Infant speech develops from random babbling and sensomotoric learning, followed by mo

Genetic investigations of people with speech and language disorders can provide windows into key aspects of human biology. Most genomic research into impaired speech development has so far focused on childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties with coordinating rapid fine motor sequences that underlie proficient speech. In 2001, pathogenic variants of FOXP2 provided the first molecular genetic accounts of CAS aetiology. Since then, disruptions in several other genes have been implicated in CAS, with a substantial proportion of cases being

Speech signal analysis to support objective clinical decision-making has gained immense interest, especially in neurological disorders. This research assessed the feasibility of speech analysis on the detection of concussions. Using a speech dataset from 82 concussed and 82 healthy participants, we extracted two speech feature sets focusing on Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) to characterize speech articulation. A machine learning pipeline was developed to discriminate concussion speech from healthy speech by applying Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Deci

The first author directed a group-therapy program of 20 sessions for clients without speech, diagnosed with autism who communicate using facilitated communication. An average of five clients and their facilitators, the leader, and an assistant leader comprised the group. The themes that emerged and the group-development process observed paralleled regular verbal groups in many respects. The success of the project challenges accepted views of person labeled autistic as intractably and inevitably isolated and unreachable.

Asperger syndrome (AS), belonging to the autism spectrum of disorders, is one of the pervasive developmental disorders. Individuals with AS usually have normal development of formal speech but pronounced problems in perceiving and producing speech prosody. The present study addressed the discrimination of speech prosody in AS by recording the mismatch negativity (MMN) and behavioural responses to natural utterances with different emotional connotations. MMN responses were abnormal in the adults with AS in several ways. In these subjects, fewer significantly elicited MMNs, diminished MMN amplit

Presented in this article is a discussion of current progress in behavioral, cognitive, and neuroanatomic definitions of apraxia of speech (AOS). A behavioral definition summarizes the speech symptoms that should be considered diagnostic of AOS with or without co-occurring aphasia and dysarthria. AOS is defined in cognitive terms as an impairment in the translation of phonological representations into specifications for articulation. Progress toward a neuroanatomic definition of AOS will rely on mapping the processes described by increasingly sophisticated cognitive models of normal speech pro

BACKGROUND: Velopharyngeal dysfunction produces a nasal speech pattern because of the inability to close the nasal airway during speech, most often associated with anatomical abnormalities of the palate.
CASE REPORT: We describe two cases of possible velopharyngeal dystonia, a task-specific movement disorder causing a speech pattern similar to velopharyngeal dysfunction. Both patients experienced treatment response with anticholinergic medication.
DISCUSSION: Dystonia affecting speech via involvement of the pharyngeal musculature may be an unrecognized etiology of voice disorders.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysarthria is a motor speech impairment commonly characterized by varying levels of reduced speech intelligibility … a on vowel space and speech intelligibility are particularly limited for Hebrew speakers with motor speech disorders.
AIMS: To determine the nature and degree of vowel space centralization in Hebrew-speaking adolescents and young adults with dysarthria, in comparison with typically developing (TD) peers, and to correlate these findings with speech intelligibility …

BACKGROUND: Patients with cleft palate often suffer from recurrent otitis media chronica with effusion during infancy. The consecutive binaural conductive hearing loss is seen as a risk factor for developing auditory processing disease. Since there are just a few studies examining auditory processing in this population this study aimed to investigate on an own patient cohort with different cleft manifestations in terms of auditory processing disorders in context to given studies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 48 patients (5-16 years): all patients had a non-syndromic cleft palate

Although commonly known as movement disorders, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal syndrome (CBS) may present with changes in speech and language alongside or even before motor symptoms. The differential diagnosis of these two disorders can be challenging, especially in the early stages. Here we review their impact on speech and language. We discuss the neurobiological and clinical-phenomenological overlap of PSP and CBS with each other, and with other disorders including non-fluent agrammatic primary progressive aphasia and primary progressive apraxia of speech. Because lang

PURPOSE: During motor speech examinations for suspected apraxia of speech (AOS), clients are routinely asked to repeat words several times sequentially. The purpose of this study was to understand the task in terms of the relationship among consecutive attempts. We asked to what extent phonemic accuracy changes across trials and whether the change is predicted by AOS diagnosis and sound production severity.
METHOD: One hundred thirty-three participants were assigned to four diagnostic groups based on quantitative metrics (aphasia plus AOS, aphasia-only, and aphasia with two borderline speech

PURPOSE: To develop an assessment protocol for speech motor planning with phonologically balanced stimuli for Brazilian Portuguese, including all necessary variables for this diagnosis.
METHODS: Three stages were carried out: In the first, word lists were built with the main criterion being syllabic and accentual patterns. From the survey conducted in Stage 1, the words that composed the first version of the protocol lists in Stage 2 were selected, and grouped into two fundamental tasks for diagnosing acquired apraxia of speech (AOS): repetition and Reading Aloud (RA). In Stage 3, the occurre

This paper presents the current state of progress of a project aimed at achieving an automated information entropy-based discrimination of phoneme mispronunciations in utterances of early school-age children. The introductory part briefly describes the dyslalia symptomology and the incidence of dyslalic disorders. This section also reviews the current challenges posed by the main research objective in other similar projects sharing the same objective and summarizes the current results thereof. The Material and Method section presents the conditions, the technology and the feature-extraction te
