Comparison between perceptual assessments of nasality and nasalance scores.

BACKGROUND: There are different reports of the usefulness of the Nasometer™ as a complement to listening, often as correlation calculations between listening and nasalance measurements. Differences between findings have been attributed to listener experience and types of speech stimuli. AIMS: To compare nasalance scores from the Nasometer with perceptual assessments, for the same and different Swedish speech stimuli, using three groups of listeners with differing levels of experience in judging speech nasality. METHODS & PROCEDURES: To compare nasalance scores and blinded listener ratings of

Learning disabilities with communicative disorders as related handicaps: a two-year study.

This study presents a demographic profile of learning-disabilities children with communicative disorders as related handicaps, and attempts to determine the analytical impact of including these children with children manifesting communicative disorders as primary handicaps. The purpose of this investigation emerged as a result of problems stemming from current definitions of learning disabilities as they relate to speech--language pathology and audiology, and from unavailable data on communicative disorders as related handicaps. The findings indicate that 0.35% of the school population were le

Development and evaluation of a comprehensive screening for orofacial dysfunction.

The aim was to develop a comprehensive screening instrument for evaluation of orofacial dysfunction that was easy to perform for different health professionals without special equipment. The Nordic Orofacial Test--Screening (NOT-S), consisting of a structured interview and clinical examination, was developed with a picture manual illustrating the different tasks in the examination. It was first tested in a Swedish version, and later translated to other Nordic languages, and to English. The interview reflected six domains, (I) Sensory function, (II) Breathing, (III) Habits, (IV) Chewing and swal

Slowly progressive anarthria with late anterior opercular syndrome: a variant form of frontal cortical atrophy syndromes.

We describe eight patients with slowly progressive speech production deficit combining speech apraxia, dysarthria, dysprosody and orofacial apraxia, and initially no other deficit in other language and non-language neuropsychological domains. Long-term follow-up (6-10 years) in 4 cases showed an evolution to muteness, bilateral suprabulbar paresis with automatic-voluntary dissociation and frontal lobe cognitive slowing without generalised intellectual deterioration. Most disabled patients presented with an anterior opercular syndrome (Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome), and pyramidal or extrapyramid

Speech recognition in noise and presbycusis: relations to possible neural mechanisms.

This study is part of ongoing efforts to characterize and determine the neural bases of presbycusis. These efforts utilize humans and animals in sets of overlapping hypotheses and experiments. Here, 50 young adult and elderly subjects, with normal audiometric thresholds or high-frequency hearing loss, were presented three types of linguistic materials at suprathreshold levels to determine speech recognition performance in noise. The study sought to determine how peripheral and central auditory system dysfunctions might be implicated in the speech recognition problems of elderly humans. There w

Are Auditory-Perceptual Evaluations of Dysphonia by Experienced Voice Clinicians Affected by Knowledge of Speaker Race?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate implicit racial bias in auditory-perceptual evaluations of dysphonic voices completed by experienced voice-focused speech-language pathologists (SLPs). METHOD: Thirty SLPs specializing in voice disorders listened to audio files of 20 Black speakers and 20 White speakers of General American English with voice disorders. The SLPs rated the overall severity of dysphonia (OS) of each voice heard using a 100-unit visual analog scale and then completed the Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT) to estimate their implicit racial bias. RESULTS:

Physiotherapy and Speech and Language therapy intervention for chronic cough.

There are few effective pharmacological therapies available to treat refractory chronic cough. Functional MRI studies of the brain have recently shown that patients with chronic cough have dysfunctional inhibitory control of cough. Self-management therapies delivered by physiotherapists or speech therapists are effective at suppressing cough. They enable patients to consciously suppress the urge to cough. The intervention consists of education, laryngeal hygiene, cough suppression and distraction measures and behaviour modification. The efficacy of Physiotherapy and Speech And Language Interve

South African Speech-Language Therapists' Perceptions of Youth Offenders and Youth Offender Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals (HCPs) tend to display similar levels of implicit bias towards certain groups as the general population. This is concerning as such biases are known to result in poorer clinical decision-making and therapeutic outcomes for offender populations. Understanding the perceptions that HCPs hold towards the groups they serve are therefore essential. Given the promising role that speech-language therapists (SLTs) could fulfil in youth offender rehabilitation, their perceptions towards the youth offender population needs further exploration. This study explored Sout
