Malabsorption syndromes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Malabsorption syndromes commonly result from a pathological interference of the normal digestive process. There have been major advances in the last 4 years. The purpose of this review is to highlight in the form of a brief summary the most outstanding information available. METHODS: The review was performed based on a medical literature search using MEDLINE (1993-1997), bibliographic reviews of book chapters and review articles. As a consequence of the extensive information incorporated in the period and the limited scope of this review, the review will focus in three aspect

Anaemias and other haematological changes due to disease of the alimentary tract.

Often anaemia and other haematological changes are unrelated to primary diseases of the erythron but are secondary to gastrointestinal alterations, such as occult or overt blood loss or defective absorption of essential haemopoietic factors. This overview emphasizes, through the description of different pathological conditions, the fundamental role of the gastrointestinal tract in maintaining a normal haematological balance. This role is jeopardized in diseases related to the liver and to the various sections of the alimentary tract from the oesophagus to the rectum. Of primary importance in i

Effect of Strongyloides ratti on small bowel function in normal and immunosuppressed host rats.

Although Strongyloides stercoralis is a common parasite, little is known about its effect on intestinal function. Published clinical studies are difficult to evaluate and compare because of the inability to differentiate the effects of the parasite load from that of various other coexisting features such as bacterial overgrowth, multiparasitism, malnutrition, or tropical sprue. Using a rat model where these problems do not occur, we found that Strongyloides ratti did not inhibit intestinal function in the healthy rat. In fact, in normal rats S. ratti appeared to increase ileal sucrase activity

The distribution and enteric loss of 51Cr-labelled lymphocytes in normal subjects and in patients with coeliac disease and other disorders of the small intestine.

Peripherally harvested lymphocytes have been labelled with 51Cr, reinjected into human subjects and their distribution then studied. Evidence is presented which suggests faecal loss of 51Cr represents loss of T lymphocytes and that there is normally a pathway of lymphocyte removal into the gut of probable importance in lymphocyte migration streams. In 9 normal subjects, without structural intestinal disease, faecal loss of lymphocytes over 5 days was 0.20% (SEM +/- 0.06) whereas in 5 patients with untreated coeliac disease faecal loss was 1.13 +/- 0.34%, in 7 with Crohn's disease it was 1.01 +
