The ethics of research involving biobanking specimens from Kenyan children and adolescents living with HIV: discrepancies between individual perceptions and policy considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Biobanking is common in research involving young people living with HIV (YPLHIV). The ethics and policies guiding this practice require careful consideration, especially given the population’s multiple vulnerabilities, like age, HIV status, and limited resources. We examined how well the perspectives of YPLHIV and other stakeholders are reflected in current policies in sub-Saharan Africa, aiming to inform more ethically grounded policy development for specimen biobanking. METHODS: We conducted a review of biobanking-related policy documents from sub-Saharan Africa, primarily from

Prevention, on-site management, and public-health implications of sport-related mild traumatic brain injury in children and adolescents: A mixed-method study.

OBJECTIVES: Sport-related mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are a significant health concern for children and adolescents, particularly in sports contact. Frequent collisions, falls, and impacts increase the risk of mTBI, leading to cognitive, emotional, and physical alterations. Despite growing awareness, limited European data, including Switzerland, hinder effective prevention and management strategies. This study aimed to: (1) assess the incidence of sport-related mTBI among Swiss children and adolescents and evaluate health education and communication activities; (2) explore stakeholder

Evidencing the effectiveness of upper limb prostheses: a multi-stakeholder perspective on study requirements.

The provision of upper limb prosthetic devices through the National Health Services (NHS) within the United Kingdom is driven by national policies. NHS England have recently published a new policy to provide multi-grip myoelectric hands. The policy highlighted that there was limited evidence to support its deployment and it will be reviewed should new information arise. The clear identification of the evidence gap provides an opportunity for the academic research community to conduct studies that will inform future iterations of this and other upper limb prosthetic related policies. This paper

Online prevention programmes for university students: stakeholder perspectives from six European countries.

BACKGROUND: Students beginning university are at a heightened risk for developing mental health disorders. Online prevention and early intervention programmes targeting mental health have the potential to reduce this risk, however, previous research has shown uptake to be rather poor. Understanding university stakeholders' (e.g. governing level and delivery staff [DS] and students) views and attitudes towards such online prevention programmes could help with their development, implementation and dissemination within university settings. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews, focus groups and on

Exploring community needs in combating aedes mosquitoes and dengue fever: a study with urban community in the recurrent hotspot area.

BACKGROUND: Aedes mosquitoes are the main vector of dengue infection, a global health threat affecting millions of people annually. Conventional prevention and control methods against dengue outbreaks have only achieved marginal success. Recognizing the complex issue at hand, a multilevel participatory approach is crucial. Thus, alternative strategies that involve community engagement are increasingly being considered and attempted. While community-based vector control programs have been conducted, sustaining behavioral changes among the population remains a challenge. This study aimed to iden

Community-engaged intervention mapping for developing the DIGNITY program: Supporting decision-making in aging and dementia for autonomy in rural nursing homes.

BACKGROUND: Person-centered care that honors individual preferences can improve the well-being of nursing home (NH) residents with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). However, preferences such as going outside independently are often restricted due to perceived safety risks. There is a critical need for strategies that help NH staff balance safety concerns with residents' autonomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed the Decision-making In aGing and demeNtIa for autonomy (DIGNITY) intervention using the Community-Engaged Intervention Mapping (CEIM) Model. Relatives' and stakeholders' perspectives on pandemic-related visiting restrictions for German nursing homes: a framework analysis.

Background: During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, many countries restricted visits to nursing homes to reduce infections among residents and staff. This also affected the residents' relatives, as personal contact was no longer possible. Aim: As part of a research network, we investigated the experiences, challenges, strategies, and consequences of visiting restrictions in nursing homes during the early phase of the pandemic from the perspective of relatives and stakeholders advocating residents' interests. Methods: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured telephone intervie

Combating antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture: the stakeholders survey in Nigeria.

The aquaculture practices have contributed immensely to the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in developing countries where antibiotic use is often poorly regulated. This study employed a cross-sectional survey design to assess the perceptions, knowledge, and practices among stakeholders in Nigerian aquaculture regarding AMR, with a particular focus on biosecurity measures. A one-day stakeholder engagement was conducted at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, involving 97 participants, including 40 researchers, 30 aquaculture farmers, 19 government officials, and 8 ot

Stakeholder-Informed Solutions To Address Barriers for Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention in Thai Hypertension Care.

Premature deaths from NCDs disproportionately affect people in low- and middle-income countries. Since alcohol use is one of the most common causes of reversible hypertension, interventions targeting alcohol use may be a feasible and effective low-cost approach to synergistically reduce the prevalence of harmful drinking and high blood pressure. This study sought to identify key factors in successfully implementing alcohol use screening and brief intervention in hypertension care in Thailand. For this purpose, we surveyed participants (NRound 1 = 91, NRound 2 = 27) from three different groups

Business-community relations under COVID-19: A study of micro and small firms.

In considering the premises of social capital and stakeholder theory, this study examines the extent to which firm-community relationships were affected during the COVID-19 crisis, and the significance of firms for their community during this unprecedented event. Responses from 107 Italian micro and small firms were gathered through an online questionnaire. The findings first reveal a strengthening of relations, particularly between firms and other businesses in their community; however, participants' comments also recognise no changes or even weakening relations. Second, three dimensions high

Evaluating Thailand's malaria reactive surveillance and response strategies for malaria elimination: a mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: Thailand aims to eliminate malaria in all provinces by 2030, where 37 out of 77 provinces have been verified as malaria-free by 2021. Thailand is accelerating its elimination activities and preventing re-establishment of malaria through implementation of the 1-3-7 reactive surveillance and response (RASR) strategy, which entails case notification within one day, case investigation within three days and case investigation survey within seven days after detecting an index malaria case. This study aimed to assess how this 1-3-7 malaria RASR strategy was implemented to understand how i

Defining a core outcome set for hypermobility spectrum disorders and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: A Delphi consensus study.

The reported prevalence of hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is unclear due to complex presentations and lack of awareness amongst professionals, contributing to diagnostic and management uncertainties. Standardising an outcome measure to assess symptoms most important to patients should help determine the impact of interventions. This Delphi study aims to reach a consensus with stakeholders on the core outcome set for children and adults with HSD/hEDS. A three-round modified Delphi consensus study with a follow-up consensus meeting was used.

Actionable solutions to address antibody validation failures.

The experimental use of antibodies that have not been validated for context-specific use frequently misdirects biomedical research. Experimental results that derive from the use of inadequately validated antibodies are estimated to waste over $1 billion annually in the United States alone and to consume millions of animal and human biological samples in experiments whose conclusions may be unreliable. Community validation frameworks, reporting standards, and independent characterisation initiatives have made important progress, and multi-stakeholder coordination efforts are emerging. However,

Determinants and Strategies for Implementation of the HOPE Self-Sampling Cervical Screening Intervention for Women Living with HIV in Ghana: A Context Assessment and Implementation Mapping Study.

Background: In Ghana, fewer than 5% of women eligible for cervical screening access this intervention. This screening gap has significant implications for early detection and treatment, especially for women living with HIV (WLWH), who are at higher risk of developing and dying from cervical cancer. The HOPE-in-Ghana (HOPE-inG) study aimed to identify determinants of implementation for the HOPE self-sampling cervical screening intervention in Ghana's Central Region and to select implementation strategies to optimize its implementation in this context. Methods: We applied the nominal group techn

Is home-based self-swabbing feasible for postoperative wound culture after cardiac surgery? A multicentre mixed-methods feasibility study in the UK.

INTRODUCTION: Poor access to surgical wound swabbing in the community often results in delayed or inappropriate antibiotic prescribing for surgical site infections. This delay can contribute to prolonged wound healing and poor antimicrobial stewardship. Patient self-swabbing at home could improve access to diagnostic testing, but its feasibility and acceptability remain unexplored. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: TREASURE is a multicentre, mixed-methods feasibility study. A total of 40 patient participants and 10 staff stakeholders will be included. 40 adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery via medi
