Changes in brain putrescine concentration associated with nonconvulsant behavioral patterns induced by systemic N-methyl-D-aspartate injection.

The relationship between the behavioral effects and motor activity induced by N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) (150 mg/kg, ip) and brain polyamine concentration was studied in male Wistar rats. Motor activity was evaluated by an automated subtraction analysis system to measure the duration and vigor of any kind of movement. The behavioral modifications exhibited by the nonconvulsant NMDA-treated rats were evaluated according to the composition and sequence of behavioral components as: hypoactivity (pattern A), partially stereotyped activity (pattern B), and generalized stereotyped activity (pattern

Superimposition and withholding of edible consequences as treatment for automatically reinforced stereotypy.

The delivery and subsequent withholding of tangible consequences has been previously investigated as an intervention for stereotypic behavior. The current investigation sought to extend previous research by evaluating its effectiveness and durability as treatment for stereotypy of 2 children who had been diagnosed with autism. Nonsocial functions for stereotypic behavior were identified via functional analysis. Edible items were then delivered contingent on stereotypy and were withheld in a subsequent condition. When the superimposition procedure failed to reduce stereotypy, environmental enri

An analogue assessment of hand stereotypies in two cases of Rett syndrome.

Stereotype hand movements are one behavioural manifestation of Rett syndrome, a neurodegenerative disorder resulting in severe mental retardation. They are neuropathological in origin, and constitute a barrier to the acquisition and exhibition of more developmentally appropriate behaviours, as well as posing a health risk for some individuals. The present study used an analogue assessment procedure, in which experimental conditions were constructed varying in the consequences delivered contingent upon the exhibition behaviour, to examine environmental correlates to the moment-to-moment express

Patterns of Masculinity Ideologies Among Chinese Adolescent Boys: A Latent Class Analysis.

Researchers have long recognized the multiplicity of masculinity ideologies. While rigid masculinity, particularly in domains of stereotypical male roles, homophobia, and male dominance, is associated with maladjustment, inclusive masculinities have been found conducive to individual well-being. Yet little is known about how this multiplicity manifests in non-Western contexts, such as in China, where Confucianism, filial piety, and conservative gender discourse intersect. Based on the gender role strain paradigm (GRSP), this study aimed to identify patterns of masculinity ideologies among 1680

The Intersection of Power and Gender: Examining the Relationship of Empowerment and Gender-Unequal Norms Among Young Adolescents in Kinshasa, DRC.

PURPOSE: To examine how perceptions of gender norms and expressions of empowerment are related among disadvantaged young adolescent boys and girls in Kinshasa, DRC. METHODS: We included data from 2,610 adolescent boys and girls between 10 and 14 years old. We examined correlations between three dimensions of perceived gender norms (a sexual double standard, gender stereotypical roles, and gender stereotypical traits) and two domains of agency (voice and decision-making), overall and by sex. We conducted sex-stratified simple and multivariable linear regression models to assess these associati

Effects of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior.

Zoological institutions develop human-animal interaction opportunities for visitors to advance missions of conservation, education, and recreation; however, the animal welfare implications largely have yet to be evaluated. This behavioral study was the first to quantify impacts of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior and welfare, by documenting giraffe time budgets that included both normal and stereotypic behaviors. Thirty giraffes from nine zoos (six zoos with varying guest feeding programs and three without) were observed using both instantaneous scan sampling and continuous b

Differential neurochemical and behavioral adaptation to cocaine after response contingent and noncontingent exposure in the rat.

RATIONALE: In naive rats, passive administration of drugs of abuse preferentially increases extracellular dopamine (DA) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) shell as compared to the core. Repeated exposure to the same drugs results in behavioral and biochemical sensitization characterized by stereotyped activity and reduction of the shell/core DA response ratio. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is to study the neurochemical and behavioral effects of response-contingent vs response-noncontingent drug administration in rats, who were bilaterally implanted with chronic intracerebral guide cannulae and

Roxindole: psychopharmacological profile of a dopamine D2 autoreceptor agonist.

The putative, selective dopamine (DA) dopamine-2 autoreceptor agonist roxindole, which also exhibits serotonin-1A-agonistic and 5-hydroxytryptamine reuptake-inhibiting properties, was examined for its behavioral effects in rats and mice. Roxindole inhibited apomorphine-induced climbing in mice and stereotyped behavior in rats with ED50 values of 1.4 mg/kg s.c. and 0.65 mg/kg s.c., respectively, and inhibited conditioned avoidance response in rats (ED50 = 1.5 mg/kg s.c.). Thus roxindole showed a profile resembling those of the classical antipsychotic haloperidol and the atypical neuroleptic clo

Differences between horses (Equus caballus) displaying oral and locomotor stereotypies in their responses to a stable mirror.

Recent cross-species analyses suggest that the different forms of stereotypic behaviour have heterogeneous causal mechanisms. In ungulates, there are indications that some forms of locomotor stereotypy may be linked to social factors. Using the domestic horse as a model species within this clade, we investigated whether individuals displaying the locomotor stereotypy box-walking (n = 6) demonstrated greater responses to a stable mirror, intended to mimic presence of a conspecific, than horses displaying the oral stereotypy crib-biting (n = 5) and non-stereotypic horses (n = 5). After a 24 hr b

Behavioral restriction, lorazepam, and escitalopram uniquely influence the expression of naturalistic stereotypy in deer mice: perspectives on anxiety- and compulsive-like behavior.

Introduction: Stereotypical expression in laboratory-housed rodents can be explained by different motivational, coping, and motor dysfunction theories. Here, we aimed to explore the neurocognitive underpinnings of high stereotypical (HS) expression in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii), previously proposed as a model system of compulsive-like behavioral persistence. Specifically, we aimed to establish whether HS behavior is related to an underlying escape-related trigger. Methods: One-hundred and sixteen deer mice were classified as either non-stereotypical (NS) or HS. Mice of each coh

Characterization of a Jumping Stereotypy in Gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) and Assessment of Opaque Tubing Enrichment on Stereotypies and Breeding.

Mongolian gerbils can develop stereotypic behaviors, including corner digging. At our institution, gerbils also engage in repetitive corner jumping, which we sought to characterize as a potentially novel stereotypy in gerbils. We then attempted to mitigate this behavior by mimicking the natural habitat by adding intracage environmental complexity. Seventeen gerbil breeding pairs were video recorded in their home cages during the light cycle. Repetitive corner jumping and digging were compared between different times of day to assess when the behaviors occurred and whether they were temporally

A new brief opioid stigma scale to assess perceived public attitudes and internalized stigma: Evidence for construct validity.

One key strategy to improve treatment access for persons with opioid use disorder (OUD) is overcoming stigma that is internalized by such individuals. Because few theoretically-derived, multidimensional measures of substance abuse stigma exist, we contribute a brief, theoretically-based measure of opioid-related stigma (adapted from Corrigan's Self-Stigma of Mental Illness Scale) to assess perceived stigma and internalized stigma among individuals with OUD. This study presents initial validation of the newly-developed Brief Opioid Stigma Scale among 387 adults who entered an inpatient opioid m

Negative emotion and perceived social class.

People use stereotypes about the benefits of wealth and success to infer that rich people look happier than poor people. For instance, perceivers categorize smiling faces as rich more often than they categorize neutral faces as rich. Moreover, richer people's neutral faces in fact display more positive affect than poorer people's neutral faces. Applying these emotion stereotypes thus enables perceivers to accurately classify targets' social class from their neutral faces. Extant research has left unexplained whether perceivers use broad differences in valence or specific emotions when judging

A comparison of RIRD within chained and multiple schedules in the treatment of vocal stereotypy.

Slaton and Hanley (2016) compared the effects of multiple and chained schedules on stereotypy and item engagement for 2 individuals who exhibited automatically maintained motor stereotypy. Contingent access to motor stereotypy (i.e., chained schedules) was more effective than time-based access (i.e., multiple schedules) at reducing motor stereotypy, increasing item engagement, and establishing stimulus control for both participants. We systematically replicated Slaton and Hanley with 2 participants by a) targeting vocal stereotypy, b) including response interruption and redirection as a treatm

Understanding Motor Stereotypies as a Transdiagnostic Phenotype.

Motor stereotypies (MS) are repetitive, rhythmic actions varying in complexity and presentation. Parents and teachers often notice these movements in children at home or in the classroom, prompting clinical attention. Concerns typically arise regarding the potential adverse consequences of these movements on the child, their impact on others, and whether they signal chronic neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This Clinical Perspectives emphasizes MS as a common, transdiagnostic phenotype. It is crucial for clinicians and families to understand their characteri

Case Reports: Clozapine for the Treatment of Catatonia in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Catatonia is a severe clinical syndrome which has been increasingly reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The prevalence of catatonia in ASD is unknown. Diagnosing catatonia in ASD is complicated by overlapping clinical features such as mutism, stereotypies, and echophenomena. Here, we present the clinical histories of two individuals with ASD and catatonia who were successfully treated with clozapine. We have reported on a novel potential treatment option for catatonia in ASD. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of clozapine for the treatment

The stability of function of automatically reinforced vocal stereotypy over time.

Although prior research has suggested the function of socially reinforced problem behavior can change across time, the stability of the function of automatically reinforced behavior is largely unknown. Further, some authors have suggested automatically reinforced behavior is likely to enter into socially mediated contingencies. The present study compared 2 functional analyses conducted on the same target behavior at least 1 year apart. Participants were 6 individuals diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability displaying automatically reinforced vocal stereotypy. Results indicat
