Strabismus surgery for Medicare-aged patients: more than a decade of insights.

BACKGROUND: The psychosocial and functional impact of strabismus among the elderly is increasingly important as life expectancy increases and factors that enhance the quality of life become more significant. The purpose of this study was to characterize the demographics, presenting complaints, health status, underlying etiology, and outcomes of strabismus surgery in three age cohorts of Medicare-aged patients. METHODS: The medical records of patients at least 65 years of age who underwent strabismus surgery between 2004 and 2015 in a university-based strabismus practice were reviewed retrospe…

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus and strabismus: a unique cause of secondary Brown syndrome.

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus can be associated with a variety of ocular and visual sequelae, including isolated or even multiple cranial neuropathies, potentially affecting the oculomotor, trochlear, or abducens nerves. We report a case of a secondary Brown syndrome following resolution of a unilateral isolated trochlear nerve palsy associated with herpes zoster ophthalmicus in an immunocompetent 57-year-old man.

Diplopia after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in a patient with a history of strabismus.

In patients with a history of strabismus, refractive surgery can result in decompensation of ocular alignment, with subsequent diplopia. Refractive surgery in the management of strabismus has been described, although it remains controversial. We present a young adult with past history of strabismus surgery and new-onset diplopia after refractive surgery. Binocular diplopia was treated surgically with laser in situ keratomileusis.

The impact of strabismus on quality of life in adults with and without diplopia: a systematic review.

Strabismus affects approximately 4% of the adult population and can cause substantial physical disturbance and changes to appearance. This article aims to examine the impact of strabismus in adults both with and without diplopia, focusing primarily on quality of life (QoL). We highlight the value of measuring QoL, assess the ways in which it can be measured, and the impact the disease, diplopia, and surgery have on the patient. QoL differs for strabismus patients based on their diplopia status. Patients with diplopia tend to have more concerns relating to functional QoL, whereas patients witho…
