Ten normal and four moderate to severe stutterers participated in the study. Pleural (Ppl) and abdominal (Pab) pressure was studied using oesophageal and gastric balloon catheter systems and VL (VL) was studied using magnetometry. The classical Campbell diagram was modified by plotting Pab versus VL. In a preliminary study we determined whether a surrogate curve could be substituted for the true curve in the Campbell diagram. A study of 71 patients with idiopathic torsion dystonia (ITD) and 71 matched controls was performed to investigate the range of possible clinical expression of ITD and the role of environmental factors in the development of the disease. A family history of tremor and stuttering were the only factors significantly associated with ITD. No associated environmental factor was identified.

Psychogenic aphonia is rare in childhood and adolescence and its management is therefore problematic. Two examples, one of a hypofunctional aphonia in a 14 year old with a stutter and another of psychogenic aphonia confirm the necessity after psychiatric assessment and treatment of speech therapy in order to restore the voice to normal. We describe a 54-year-old female carrier of X-linked adrenomyeloneuropathy presenting with episodic stuttering triggered by mild exertion. Despite pre-existing neurological disease, normal neuroimaging, clinical inconsistency, distractibility, and rapid response to respiratory-based therapy supported a functional speech disorder. This case emphasizes the importance of recognizing functional speech disorders in patients with other comorbid neurological conditions.

Individuals who survive a suicide attempt by hanging have a range of deficits, including neuropsychological, neuropsychiatric, pulmonary and even speech and language deficits.
