Detection of accessory renal arteries with virtual vascular endoscopy of the aorta.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of virtual vascular endoscopy (VVE) in the detection of accessory renal arteries. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the CT angiography data sets of 67 patients (29 male and 38 female; age range 17-72 years, mean age 53 years) imaged for the study of the renal arteries, and affected by renovascular hypertension. All patients also had intraarterial digital subtraction angiography (DSA). CT angiography data sets were processed to obtain maximum intensity projection (MIP) and surface-rendered VVE of the aorta. Axial images, MIP, and VVE were evaluat

[MRI of the thorax; clinical application and efficacy in 100 thoracic diseases].

We carried out a retrospective analysis of about 100 surgical cases of mediastinal, pleural, chest wall and pulmonary disorders in order to determine the clinical application and efficacy of MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the thorax. Coronal and/or axial image of T1-weighted images were obtained in all cases, and T2-weighted or gadolinium-DTPA contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images were additionally obtained in several selected cases. All MR images were compared with findings of chest X-ray, CT and IVDSA (intravenous digital subtraction angiography) as appropriate. As a result, MR images we

Transcranial color-coded duplex sonography, magnetic resonance angiography, and computed tomography angiography: methods, applications, advantages, and limitations.

Transcranial color-coded duplex sonography (TCCD), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and computed tomography angiography (CTA) are novel noninvasive or minimally invasive techniques for the study of the intracranial circulation. TCCD is relatively inexpensive and permits bedside examination. It improves the accuracy and reliability of conventional transcranial Doppler studies. The main limitation of TCCD are the ultrasonic windows. They restrict the area of insonation to the major cerebral arteries and the proximal part of its branches, lower the spatial resolution, and may prevent transte

Ideal length of accessory rod for the prevention of rod fracture after pedicle subtraction osteotomy in adult spinal deformity: short or long?

OBJECTIVE: Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) is an effective surgical procedure for adult spinal deformity (ASD). However, the complexity of the procedure and its associated complications including rod fracture (RF) remain challenging issues. Among several RF reduction methods, the accessory rod (AR) is an important surgical technique. To date, knowledge about the ideal length and configuration of the AR is limited. This study aimed to assess the influence of the connection levels and configuration of the AR on RF occurrence in patients with ASD who underwent long level constructs and PSO.

Intravenous regional limb perfusion techniques in the anesthetized foal.

OBJECTIVE: To provide a video tutorial on how to perform IV regional limb perfusion (IVRLP) using the cephalic or saphenous vein in anesthetized foals. ANIMALS: Foals from neonatal to weaning age not amenable to standing, sedated procedures. METHODS: A pneumatic or wide-rubber tourniquet is applied around the proximal antebrachium or gaskin. The IVRLP dose of desired antimicrobial is diluted with physiologic saline to 30 mL of total volume. A 23-gauge winged infusion set or 22-gauge, 1-inch IV catheter is inserted into either the cephalic or saphenous vein distal to the tourniquet, and the e

Materials and manufacturing techniques for occlusal splints: A literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To review the materials and fabrications methods of occlusal splints with their advantages and shortcomings and to clarify the indications for each. BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) encompass a range of conditions affecting the masticatory system. Occlusal splints are currently recognised as a viable option for the management of TMDs when they are adopted in conjunction with additional approaches varying from conservative procedures (counselling, biofeedback, physical therapy, pharmacotherapy) to irreversible and less conservative ones (occlusal adjustments, ort

Spinal Dorsal Intradural Arteriovenous Fistulas: Natural History, Imaging, and Management.

In this review, we describe the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of spinal dorsal intradural arteriovenous fistulas (DI-AVFs), focusing on novel research areas. DI-AVFs compose the most common subgroup of spinal arteriovenous lesions and most commonly involve the thoracic spine, followed by lumbar and sacral segments. The pathogenesis underlying DI-AVFs is an area of emerging understanding, thought to be attributable to venous congestion and hypertension that precipitate ascending myelopathy. Patients with DI-AVFs typically present with motor, sensory, or urinary dysfunction, although

Clinical Efficiency of an Artificial Intelligence-Based 3D-Angiography for Visualization of Cerebral Aneurysm: Comparison with the Conventional Method.

PURPOSE: Artificial intelligence (AI)-based three-dimensional angiography (3D-A) was reported to demonstrate visualization of cerebral vasculature equivalent to that of three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography (3D-DSA). However, the applicability and efficacy of the AI-based 3D‑A algorithm have not yet been investigated for 3D-DSA micro imaging. In this study, we evaluated the usefulness of the AI-based 3D‑A in 3D-DSA micro imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 3D-DSA micro datasets of 20 consecutive patients with cerebral aneurysm (CA) were reconstructed with 3D-DSA and 3D‑A. Three re

[Regional myocardial perfusion in ischemic heart disease assessed by myocardial contrast echocardiography].

Myocardial contrast echocardiography is a new cardiovascular imaging technique that can be used to evaluate regional myocardial perfusion. Regional myocardial perfusion was studied in 12 patients with normal coronary arteries, 14 patients with old myocardial infarction, four patients with acute myocardial infarction, and 15 patients with effort angina. Conventional two-dimensional echo imaging was obtained during intracoronary injections of relatively small volumes (2 ml) of agitated Urografin-76. The echo intensities were measured before and after injecting contrast agents and the subtraction

Eponymous "valves" of the nasolacrimal drainage apparatus. II. Frequency of visualization on dacryocystography.

Developmental remnants may follow segmental canalization of ectodermal epithelial cords forming the nasolacrimal drainage apparatus (NDA). This can result in false luminal "valves" along the path of the NDA, many of which have been named, but most have not been anatomically identified with consistency. By 1908, eight such "valves" were documented, those of: Foltz, Bochdalek, Rosenmüller, Huschke, Aubaret, Béraud or Krause, Taillefer, and Hasner or Cruveilhier or Bianchi. Digital subtraction dacryocystography (DS-DCG) is the highest spatial resolution imaging technique available to outline in v

Forward subtractive libraries containing genes transactivated by dexamethasone in ataxia-telangiectasia lymphoblastoid cells.

Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by biallelic mutations in the Ataxia Telangiectasia-mutated gene. A-T shows a complex phenotype ranging from early-onset progressive neurodegeneration to immunodeficiencies, high incidence of infections, and tumors. Unfortunately, no therapy is up to now available for treating this condition. Recently, the short term treatment of ataxia-telangiectasia patients with glucocorticoids was shown to improve their neurological symptoms and possibly reverse cerebellar atrophy. Thus, corticosteroids represent an attractive approa

Multimodal MRI analysis of the corpus callosum reveals white matter differences in presymptomatic and early Huntington's disease.

Recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies suggest that abnormalities in Huntington's disease (HD) extend to white matter (WM) tracts in early HD and even in presymptomatic stages. Thus, changes of the corpus callosum (CC) may reflect various aspects of HD pathogenesis. We recruited 17 HD patients, 17 pre-HD subjects, and 34 healthy age-matched controls. Three-dimensional anatomical MRI and diffusion tensor images of the brain were acquired on a 3T scanner. Combining region-of-interest analyses, voxel-based morphometry, and tract-based spatial statistics, we investigated callosal thicknes

Identification of higher brain centres that may encode the cardiorespiratory response to exercise in humans.

1. Positron emission tomography (PET) was used to identify the neuroanatomical correlates underlying 'central command' during imagination of exercise under hypnosis, in order to uncouple central command from peripheral feedback. 2. Three cognitive conditions were used: condition I, imagination of freewheeling downhill on a bicycle (no change in heart rate, HR, or ventilation, V(I)): condition II, imagination of exercise, cycling uphill (increased HR by 12 % and V(I) by 30 % of the actual exercise response): condition III, volitionally driven hyperventilation to match that achieved in condition

Endovascular treatment of a "blister-like" aneurysm of the internal carotid artery.

BACKGROUND: "Blister-like" aneurysms of the supraclinoid internal carotid artery have recently been recognized as having unique pathological and clinical features. Little is known regarding their optimal treatment modality. METHODS: We report a case of a "blister-like" aneurysm of the internal carotid artery treated with Guglielmi detachable coil (GDC) embolization. CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old man presented with a Hunt & Hess grade II subarachnoid hemorrhage. Computed tomography revealed diffuse subarachnoid blood. Cerebral angiography demonstrated a broad-based bulge on the medial wall of th

Comparison of intrinsic optical signals associated with low Mg2+-and 4-aminopyridine-induced seizure-like events reveals characteristic features in adult rat limbic system.

PURPOSE: To analyze the intrinsic optical signal change associated with seizure-like events in two frequently used in vitro models-the low-Mg2+ and the 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) models-and to monitor regions of onset and spread patterns of these discharges by using imaging of intrinsic optical signals (IOS). METHODS: Combined hippocampal-entorhinal-cortex slices of adult rats were exposed to two different treatments: lowering extracellular Mg2+ concentrations or application of 100 microM 4-AP. The electrographic features of the discharges were monitored using extracellular microelectrodes. Optic
