5-Fluorouracil in Facial Plastic Surgery: Indications, Efficacy, and Safety - A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is an antimetabolite that inhibits fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, making it valuable in facial plastic surgery for scar modulation and other conditions. This systematic review examines the indications, outcomes, and safety of 5-FU in facial plastic surgery. Due to methodological heterogeneity across studies, a narrative synthesis was performed. A comprehensive search of MEDLINE, Cochrane, SCOPUS, EMBASE, PubMed, and Web of Science identified 32 eligible studies (1,456 patients) from 4,772 screened articles. Indications included keloids, hypertrophic scar

A modified anchored suturing technique for enhanced flap stability in periodontal plastic surgery: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession is a common mucogingival condition that may cause esthetic concerns, root sensitivity, and functional problems. Tunneling techniques with connective tissue grafts (CTGs) are well established for root coverage and esthetic preservation. Various suspensory sutures have been proposed to stabilize coronally advanced flaps. The butterfly suture is a modified anchored approach intended to provide simultaneous stabilization of interproximal and midfacial areas. This case series describes the clinical application and short-term outcomes of this technique. METHODS: Three

Searching for Signs of Plastic Surgery on the Face: Tracking the Eyes of Where Observers Look.

Background: Objective measurement of where observers direct their attention to faces when searching for signs of facial plastic surgery (FPS) is currently lacking. Objective: To compare where laypersons direct their attention on facial photographs using eye-tracking software when they are asked to (1) search for signs of aesthetic facial surgery or (2) allowed to gaze without direction (free-gaze). Methods: Naïve observers either free-gazed or examined faces for signs of FPS (FPS-prompted) for 10 s per face while their gaze was recorded by an eye-tracking system. Faces had no known history or

The emerging role of robotics in plastic and reconstructive surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The role of robotics has grown exponentially. There is an active interest amongst practitioners in the transferability of the potential benefits into plastic and reconstructive surgery; however, many plastic surgeons report lack of widespread implementation, training, or clinical exposure. We report the current evidence base, and surgical opportunities, alongside key barriers, and limitations to overcome, to develop the use of robotics within the field. This systematic review of PubMed, Medline, and Embase has been conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Revie

Nanofat in Plastic Reconstructive, Regenerative, and Aesthetic Surgery: A Review of Advancements in Face-Focused Applications.

Nanofat is a relatively novel technique in fat grafting that has gained significant interest in the fields of regenerative medicine, aesthetic and translational research. It involves the extraction of autologous fat from a patient, which is then transformed into "nanofat", consisting of small fat particles with a diameter of less than 0.1 mm and containing high concentrations of stem cells and growth factors. This article focuses on the use of nanofat in facial rejuvenation and its potential for lipomodelling. Fat tissue is a "stem cell depot" and nanofat contains many stem cells that can diff

An Updated Overview of Gender Dysphoria and Gender Affirmation Surgery: What Every Plastic Surgeon Should Know.

Gender dysphoria refers to the medical condition experienced by individuals whose physical anatomy is not consistent with their gender identity. Surgery is a safe and effective treatment for many individuals, yet the current demand for surgery exceeds the number of trained surgeons. This article reviews gender-affirming surgical procedures and emphasizes an individualized approach within the context of a multidisciplinary team. We review pre-, intra-, and postoperative care including the preoperative requirements for surgery.

Usefulness of Endoscopy for Female Genital Plastic Surgery: A Series of 4 Cases with Genital Malformations.

BACKGROUND Female genital plastic surgery is rare and requires specific patient anatomical information to successfully carry out the appropriate procedure for each female genital malformation. Performing endoscopic surgery can increase the amount of information intraoperatively. We report on our experience of proactively using endoscopy to obtain additional intraoperative information to perform the appropriate surgical procedure suited to each female genital malformation, and evaluate the usefulness of concurrent endoscopy for improved surgical outcomes. Connective Tissue Graft Stabilization by Subperiosteal Sling Suture for Periodontal Plastic Surgery Using the VISTA Approach.

This report describes a minimally invasive surgical approach using the vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access and a suture called the subperiosteal sling (SPS) to stabilize the connective tissue graft (CTG) for periodontal plastic surgery. The SPS suture engages only the CTG and stabilizes the CTG against the tooth independent of the overlying tissue, which minimizes the risk of graft mobility caused by muscle movement.

Venous thromboembolism in plastic surgery: the current state of evidence in risk assessment and chemoprophylactic options.

The application of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis has been the topic of intense debate in plastic surgery. The overall incidence of VTE is low in plastic surgery patients as compared to other surgical subspecialties but may be higher in the inpatient rather than outpatient plastic surgery populations. The Caprini Risk Assessment Model is the most highly studied and validated tool to assess VTE risk in plastic surgery patients. However, the Caprini model lacks procedure-specific risk assessment and patient-specific risk factor calculations. Due to these limitations, such as the low in

Perioperative Safety in Plastic Surgery: Is the World Health Organization Checklist Useful in a Broad Practice?

INTRODUCTION: In October 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced the Safe Surgery Saves Lives Program, the cornerstone of which was a 19-item safe-surgery checklist (SSC), in 8 selected hospitals around the world. After implementation, death rates decreased significantly from 1.5% to 0.8% (P = 0.003), inpatient complications reduced from 11% to 7% (P < 0.001), as did rates of surgical site infection (P < 0.001) and wrong-sided surgery (P < 0.47), across all sites. On the basis of these impressive reductions in complications and mortality, our institution adopted the WHO SSC in Apr
