Targeting hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide to repair cardiovascular injury after trauma.

The systemic cardiovascular effects of major trauma, especially neurotrauma, contribute to death and permanent disability in trauma patients and treatments are needed to improve outcomes. In some trauma patients, dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system produces a state of adrenergic overstimulation, causing either a sustained elevation in catecholamines (sympathetic storm) or oscillating bursts of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity. Trauma can also activate innate immune responses that release cytokines and damage-associated molecular patterns into the circulation. This combination of al

Multiple areas of the cerebral cortex influence the stomach.

The central nervous system both influences and is influenced by the gastrointestinal system. Most research on this gut-brain connection has focused on how ascending signals from the gut and its microbiome alter brain function. Less attention has focused on how descending signals from the central nervous system alter gut function. Here, we used retrograde transneuronal transport of rabies virus to identify the cortical areas that most directly influence parasympathetic and sympathetic control of the rat stomach. Cortical neurons that influence parasympathetic output to the stomach originated fr

Sympathetic innervation controls homeostasis of neuromuscular junctions in health and disease.

The distribution and function of sympathetic innervation in skeletal muscle have largely remained elusive. Here we demonstrate that sympathe … metic treatment. In conclusion, this study identifies the neuromuscular junction as a target of the sympathetic nervous system and shows that sympathetic input is crucial for synapse maintenance and function.

Near-infrared Intraoperative Imaging of Thoracic Sympathetic Nerves: From Preclinical Study to Clinical Trial.

UNLABELLED: The sympathetic nervous system controls and regulates the activities of the heart and other organs. Sympathetic nervous system dysfunction leads to disease. Therefore, intraoperative real-time imaging of thoracic sympathetic nerves (ITSN) would be of great clinical significance for diagnosis and therapy. The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the feasibility and validity of intraoperative ITSN using indocyanine green (ICG). METHODS: ITSN using ICG was performed on 10 rabbits to determine its feasibility. Animals were allocated to two groups. The rabbits in one group re…

Sweat function in Parkinson's disease.

Sweat function was studied in patients with Parkinson's disease and in normal adults by sympathetic skin response, the bromphenol blue printing method and the silicone mould method. In patients with Parkinson's disease, dysfunction of sweating was classified into two types: one type involved the postganglionic fibres and the other involved the preganglionic fibres or the central nervous system. The latter was observed in patients with milder disease and the former was observed in patients with severe disease. The progressive involvement of sweat function in Parkinson's disease may reflect spre

Twenty patients with prostatodynia were studied urodynamically with synchronous video-pressure-flow studies and electromyography of the exte … r or detrusor-striated sphincter dyssynergia but suggest a primary abnormality involving the pelvic sympathetic nervous system. We believe that more advanced methods than those available currently are needed to elucidate fully the role of the autonomic nervous system, especially its sympathetic component, in the etiology of prostatodynia.

Examining the Influence of Glycemic Management During Sleep on Sleep-Related Bruxism: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) is a biomarker of sleep-related bruxism (SRB). Sleep quality and sympathetic nervous system activity are associated with SRB onset. We focused on fluctuations in blood glucose levels during sleep, which are considered to affect these factors. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the effects of stabilising blood glucose levels through dietary instructions on SRB improvement. METHODS: Nineteen healthy adults diagnosed with SRB were included in this study. The first 7 days were the non-intervention period, and the second 7 days were the…

The autonomic nervous system and bone health in chronic kidney disease.

Besides the well-known role of hormonal factors in mineral and bone metabolism, the sympathetic nervous system participates in this regulation by inhibiting bone formation and promoting bone resorption, primarily via β-adrenergic receptors expressed on osteoblasts. Conversely, the parasympathetic system, through cholinergic signalling, inhibits osteoclast activity, promoting bone formation and maintaining skeletal homeostasis. This review presents the role of the autonomic nervous system, with particular focus on the potential role of β-blockers, especially β1-selective blockers, in modulating…

Sympathetic innervation of ciliary muscle and oculomotor function in emmetropic and myopic young adults.

PURPOSE: Evidence exists for an additional inhibitory accommodative control system mediated by the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). This work aims to show the relative prevalence of sympathetic inhibition in young emmetropic and myopic adults, and to evaluate the effect of sympathetic facility on accommodative and oculomotor function. METHODS: Profiling of ciliary muscle innervation was carried out in 58 young adult subjects (30 emmetropes, 14 early onset myopes, 14 late onset myopes) by examining post-task open-loop accommodation responses, recorded continuously by a

Targeting postoperative sleep disorders: Current advances and emerging directions in stellate ganglion block therapy.

The stellate ganglion block (SGB) is an extensively utilized regional anesthesia technique, integral to pain management protocols and postoperative analgesia. Its fundamental objective lies in the modulation of sympathetic nervous system activity, thereby facilitating the intricate balance of the autonomic, circulatory, endocrine, and immune systems to preserve homeostatic equilibrium. Postoperative sleep disorders (PSD), characterized by disruptions in sleep quantity and quality subsequent to surgical intervention, manifest as oscillations in the sleep-wake cycle and are indicative of postope…

The neuronal and glial cell diversity in the celiac ganglion revealed by single-nucleus RNA sequencing.

The sympathetic nervous system regulates various visceral functions, including those of the heart, lungs, and digestive system, and maintains homeostasis. The prevertebral ganglia (PVG) in the peripheral nervous system serve as a vital relay station, transmitting efferent signals to visceral organs. The PVG receives innervation from intestinofugal afferent neurones (IFANs) that originate from the enteric plexus, as well as from spinal sensory nerves that innervate the enteric tract. While neural circuits comprising sensory and sympathetic nerves have been proposed, the exact diversity of the i…

Autonomic Cardiovascular Alterations in Chronic Kidney Disease: Effects of Dialysis, Kidney Transplantation, and Renal Denervation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the results of studies of the effects of dialysis and kidney transplantation on the autonomic nervous system alterations that occur in chronic kidney disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Vagal control of the heart mediated by arterial baroreceptors is altered early in the course of the renal disease. Sympathetic activation occurs, with increases in resting heart rate, venous plasma norepinephrine levels, muscle sympathetic nerve traffic, and other indirect indices of adrenergic drive. The magnitude of the changes reflects the clinical severity of the kidney disease. Both the

Heart failure as an autonomic nervous system dysfunction.

In heart failure, it has been recognized that the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is activated and the imbalance of the activity of the SNS and vagal activity interaction occurs. The abnormal activation of the SNS leads to further worsening of heart failure. Many previous clinical and basic studies have demonstrated that the abnormal activation of the SNS is caused by the enhancement of excitatory inputs including changes in: (1) peripheral baroreceptor and chemoreceptor reflexes; (2) chemical mediators that control sympathetic outflow; and (3) central sites that integrate sympathetic outflow…

The effect of angiotensin II (Ang II) infusion on the doses of ouabain required to induce ventricular arrhythmias and death was investigated … Thus, the action of Ang II to augment ouabain toxicity appeared to be related to its effects on the sympathetic nervous system.
