The lacrimal drainage systems of 78 eyes were studied by technetium scanning at the University of Iowa and, of these, 25 were also subjected to conventional contrast dacryocystography. Twenty-six eyes were asymptomatic for epiphora and normal scans were recorded on all of them. All of the remaining 52 symptomatic eyes had an abnormal lacrimal scan with either a presac or a postsac blockage. IMPORTANCE: Parathyroid hormone (PTH)-secreting thymomas are an exceedingly rare entity. A PTH-secreting thymoma was discovered in the workup of a patient with primary hyperparathyroidism. A concomitant parathyroid adenoma was removed from the same patient. We present the intriguing clinical course and review the literature on this rare entity. In addition, we discuss the use of scanning with technetium Tc 99m sestamibi, the PTH assay, and cervical ultrasonography in the workup of a parathyroid adenoma.

In a study designed to evaluate the radionuclide images in patients with gout, six (23%) of the 26 patients had clear evidence of Paget's disease of bone by technetium Tc 99m medronate imaging. A reference population consisting of 333 technetium Tc 99m medronate bone scans ordered for other reasons was reviewed, and only seven scans (2.1%) were found to have evidence of Paget's disease. In an attempt to know the exact retrograde spread of high-dosage 5-aminosalicylic acid enemas, we have studied eight patients with active left-sided colitis, by adding a small amount of barium sulfate to the enemas and by checking the spread radiologically after 15 minutes, 1 hour, and 6 hours. Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. We evaluated scintigraphic localisation of the inflammatory focus in 15 patients with this condition. Technetium-labelled bone scans precisely localised abnormal discrete areas of tracer uptake in 12 (80%) of patients in the medial and posterior aspect below the inferior surface of the calcaneum.
