Increased incidence of anxiety and depression during bone marrow transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Since the first organ transplantation in the 1950s, there have been reports that patients who underwent organ transplantation had a poor prognosis if they were depressed and/or anxious prior to transplantation. Our objective in this study was to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression in the different stages of bone marrow transplantation (BMT). METHODS: Mood disorders (MD), anxiety disorders (AD), and adjustment disorders (ADD) were measured five times with DSM IV. The Beck Inventory of Depression (BID) and Hamilton Rating Scale of Anxiety (HRSA) were used to measure l

Mental health during ecological crisis: translating and validating the Hogg Eco-anxiety Scale for Argentinian and Spanish populations.

BACKGROUND: Eco-anxiety is increasingly recognized as a shared experience by many people internationally, encompassing fear of environmental catastrophe and anxiety about ecological crises. Despite its importance in the context of the changing climate, measures for this construct are still being developed in languages other than English. METHODS: To contribute to global eco-anxiety research, we translated the Hogg Eco-Anxiety Scale (HEAS) into Spanish, creating the HEAS-SP. We validated this measure in samples from both Argentina (n = 990) and Spain (n = 548), performing measurement invarianc

Apraxia related with subcortical lesions due to cerebrovascular disease.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether ideomotor apraxia exists in patients with subcortical ischemic lesions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A matched-control, prospective and multi-centered research design was used. Ideomotor apraxia, anxiety and depression were assessed by the Movement Imitation Test and the Hamilton scales, respectively. RESULTS: Forty two consecutive patients with subcortical ischemic stroke and an equal number of healthy participants, matched in age and sex were included. Paired-sample t-tests showed that patients had significantly more apractic elements in their movements (t = 5.03, P

Both anxiety and joint laxity determine the olfactory features in panic disorder.

Previous research showed a high sensitivity in sensorial modalities in panic disorder (PD). This disorder has been consistently associated to the joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS). In non-clinical samples, this collagen alteration has been also related to an enhanced sensitivity in some sensorial modalities. The main aim of this study is to explore the olfactory functioning in PD in relation to JHS. Sixty patients with PD and sixty healthy controls performed the Sniffin' Sticks Test (SST) (threshold subtest), and completed the Affective Impact of Odors scale (AIO), the Relational Scale of Olf

Living with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia: coping and psychological distress - a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between coping strategies measured by Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Scale (COPE) and psychological distress measured by Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Becks Hopelessness Scale (BHS) in individuals living with Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) and to examine if coping strategies might have a mediating role between experienced illness and psychological distress. HHT is mainly caused by mutations in the ENG- or ALK1-genes and associated with a shorter life span. 90% of patients have recurre

Enhancing psychological performance and basketball skills: a comparative study of elite athletes and college recreational players after an 8-week mindfulness intervention.

BACKGROUND: In high-intensity sports such as basketball, psychological factors significantly influence performance. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) show potential for reducing anxiety, depression, and mental fatigue while enhancing attention, resilience, and basketball technical skills. However, few studies have compared the effects of MBI between elite athletes and recreational players. PURPOSE: This research examined the effects of an 8-week Mindfulness Acceptance Insight Commitment (MAIC) intervention on psychological performance and technical skills among elite basketball athletes

Measurement invariance of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7) across four European countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7) are self-report measures of major depressive disorder and generalised anxiety disorder. The primary aim of this study was to test for differential item functioning (DIF) on the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 items based on age, sex (males and females), and country. METHOD: Data from nationally representative surveys in UK, Ireland, Spain, and Italy (combined N = 6,054) were used to fit confirmatory factor analytic and multiple-indictor multiple-causes models. RESULTS: Spain and Italy had higher latent variab

The Social Phobia Inventory: screening and cross-cultural validation in Spanish adolescents.

Availability of brief, self-report measures to be used as screening instruments is crucial to detect correctly youth with social anxiety disorder and therefore, reach those otherwise under-detected and under-treated. A previous study revealed that the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) was potentially an appropriate measure for screening social anxiety among US adolescents. However, there is a lack of information concerning its properties as a screening test in other cultures and languages. This is the main objective of this study, although further validity of the scale is provided as well. The sa

Hypomania, anxiety and the emotional Stroop.

Bentall & Thompson (1990) selected participants on the basis of high, medium and low scores on the Hypomanic Personality Scale. In an emotional Stroop test, the high hypomanic participants showed interference of colour naming for depression-related but not euphoria-related words. The current study tests the hypothesis that the effects found were mediated by anxiety, and not hypomania as claimed. Bentall & Thompson's study was repeated but measures of state of trait anxiety were also taken. When analysis was restricted to three subgroups selected in the same manner as in Bentall & Thompson's (1

The use of the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale in a clinical trial.

A new scale for assessing severity in PDA (Panic Disorder with/without Agoraphobia) has recently been developed: the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale [P & A (Bandelow, 1995)]. The objective of this study was to test whether the scale is sensitive to changes during a treatment trial. Thirty-seven patients (mean age, 32.7; S.D., 6.3) with PDA were treated with imipramine (75-150 mg/day) for 8 weeks in an open prospective trial. Patients with concurrent agoraphobia were instructed in practising self-exposure to agoraphobic situations. The total scores on the P & A, the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) an

Vulnerability to anxiety differently predicts cortisol reactivity and state anxiety during a laboratory stressor in healthy girls and boys.

BACKGROUND: Children diagnosed with anxiety disorders show altered cortisol and state anxiety reactivity to stressful situations. To date, it remains unclear whether these dysregulations emerge after the pathology or whether they are also detectable in healthy children. If the latter is true, this may provide insight into children's vulnerability to develop clinical anxiety. Various personality factors (anxiety sensitivity, intolerance of uncertainty, perseverative cognitions) increase youth's vulnerability to develop anxiety disorders. This study aimed to examine whether vulnerability to anxi

Use of the MMPI-2 in American Indians: II. Empirical correlates.

R. W. Robin, R. L. Greene, B. Albaugh, A. Caldwell, and D. Goldman (2003) reported that members of 2 American Indian tribal groups had statistically significant higher T scores on several MMPI-2 clinical, content, and supplementary scales than did the MMPI-2 normative group. The present study investigated the empirical correlates of the MMPI-2 scales in these American Indian tribal members. There were a large number of significant correlates reflecting antisocial symptoms with Scales 4 (Psychopathic Deviate), 9 (Hypomania), Anger, and Antisocial Practices. There were even a larger number of si

A Correlation Study of Birthing Ball Technique and Sacral Massage on Maternal and Fetal Well-being Among Parturient Women: A Non-Randomized Clinical Trail.

BACKGROUND: A woman's pregnancy might be challenging because there are so many changes happening at the time. Most women who give birth have severe labor pain. Women typically use a number of coping strategies, including both pharmaceutical and non-pharmacological, or more natural, techniques, to minimize labor discomfort. "Non-pharmacological coping strategies" refers to methods other than using medications to alleviate labor pain. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to correlate birthing ball exercise and sacral massage on maternal and fetal well-being among prim parturient women. M

Eating attitudes, health-risk behaviors, self-esteem, and anxiety among adolescent females in a suburban high school.

In order to determine whether adolescent females with abnormal eating attitudes display lower levels of self-esteem and higher levels of anxiety than their peers, and whether these adolescents participate in health-risk behaviors to a greater or lesser degree than their peers, we administered a series of questionnaires to the females attending a suburban high school in New York State. The questionnaires, completed by 268 students (mean age, 16.2 years), included data on health-risk behaviors and weight attitudes, an Eating Attitudes Test, a self-esteem scale, and an anxiety inventory. The overlooked majority of hikikomori: Latent profiles reveal a discrepancy between social anxiety and life functioning.

Hikikomori is increasingly recognized as heterogeneous; however, how behavioral functions relate to clinically important targets (e.g., functional impairment and social-evaluative anxiety) remains unclear. We identified latent hikikomori profiles by integrating behavioral topography and functions and characterized their clinical profiles. The study recruited Japanese adults aged 18-59 using an online panel, comprising 200 participants each in the hikikomori and control groups, respectively. Latent profile analysis was conducted using three functional indicators from the Hikikomori Functional A

Validation of the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) to screen for depression and anxiety in the Greek general population.

OBJECTIVE: The Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) is an ultra-brief self-report screening scale for depression and anxiety with promising psychometric properties; however, its reliability and validity have not been investigated in Greece yet. The objective of the current study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the PHQ-4 and to establish a cut-off score to identify depression and anxiety in the Greek general population. METHODS: The reliability of the PHQ-4 was assessed using a random sample of 204 students from Athens, Greece. The internal consistency (Cronbach's α) was e
