A report of clinical trial conducted on Toto ointment and soap products.

OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of Toto ointment and soap on common skin disorders was tested. METHODOLOGY: A cohort of Nigerians with common skin conditions such as fungal and bacterial skin infections, scabies, acne vulgaris, and dandruff were selected and followed for a period of 12 weeks. The study is a randomized, comparative, prospective, blinded observational study. Following a placebo run in/wash out period, patients were given either a Toto ointment or soap, or a combination of these, or sulfur ointment alone. Soap use was preferred in patients with Tinea capitis more than patients with any …

Definition of an algorithm for the management of common skin diseases at primary health care level in sub-Saharan Africa.

In order to help primary health care (PHC) workers in developing countries in the care of common skin diseases, an algorithm for the management of pyoderma, scabies, superficial mycoses, contact dermatitis and referral of early leprosy cases (based on the identification of diseases through the presence of objective key signs, and on treatments by generic drugs) was elaborated. One thousand patients were seen by trained dermatologists, who established diagnoses and treatments; in addition, there was systematic recording of each key sign, according to the successive algorithm steps. We compared

Skin disorders affecting human immunodeficiency virus-infected children living in an orphanage in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Skin disorders are common in children in Ethiopia, and it is estimated that 92,000 Ethiopian children are infected with human im … skin disorder; 21 of these had two disorders and 6 had three disorders. The commonest diagnosis was tinea capitis, affecting 39% of children. The other common diagnoses were: molluscum contagiosum (MC) (21%), verruca vulgaris (13%), plane warts (8%) and seborrhoeic dermatitis (7%). There was no significant difference in the prevalence of skin disease between ch …

Radiation-induced meningiomas: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 927 meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the most common intracranial tumor. Ionizing radiation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of radiation-indu … d by whether they received cranial radiotherapy ([CRT]; n = 555 patients) or scalp radiotherapy for tinea capitis ([TC]; n = 270 patients). The median dose prescribed to the CRT and TC groups was ~30 Gy and 1.5 Gy, respectively. The radiation interval to meningioma development between CRT and TC groups were 21.54 and 40.49 years, respectively (P < 0.0001). Twen …

[A recurrent case of adult favus successfully treated with terbinafine].

Favus or tinea capitis favosa, is a chronic inflammatory dermatophytosis of the scalp. The disease is particularly common in children aged 6 to 10 years, more often in boys, and it also occurs in adults. Human-to-human transmission is therefore possible. Anthropophilic Trichophyton schöenleinii is responsible for over 95% of favus cases. In addition, there are rare cases of anthropophilic T.violaceum, zoophilic (T.verrucosum, T.quinckeanum, and Microsporum canis) and geophilic M.gypseum species recorded as agents of favus. It is also reported in mice (T.quinckeanum), poultry (M.gallinae), and …

'Clicking-brain syndrome': a curious cause of insomnia.

This case report describes a curious cause of insomnia. A 93-year-old woman presented to our follow-up clinic with the complaint of insomnia secondary to an audible click emanating from her skull. The site of loud biphasic-sound production corresponded to an area of the scalp where a squamous cell carcinoma had been removed 11 years previously.

CNS tumor induction by radiotherapy: a report of four new cases and estimate of dose required.

We have analyzed 60 cases of intra-axial brain tumors associated with antecedent radiation therapy. These include four new cases. The patients had originally received radiation therapy for three reasons: (a) cranial irradiation for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), (b) definitive treatment of CNS neoplasia, and (c) treatment of benign disease (mostly cutaneous infections). The number of cases reported during the past decade has greatly increased as compared to previous years. Forty-six of the 60 intra-axial tumors have been reported since 1978. The relative risk of induction of an intra-axia

Hair loss in children.

Hair diseases represent frequent complaints in dermatology clinics, and they can be caused by a number of conditions reflected by specific diagnoses. Hair loss is not uncommon in the pediatric group, but its patterns in this group are different from those seen in adults. Additionally, in children, these disorders can have psychological effects that can interfere with growth and development. Hair is easily accessible for examination, and dermatologists are in the enviable situation of being able to study many disorders using simple diagnostic techniques. To fully understand hair loss during chi

Isolation of Microsporum gallinae from a fighting cock (Gallus gallus domesticus) in Japan.

A case of tinea corporis caused by Microsporum gallinae was found in 2011 in Okinawa, located in the southern part of Japan. The patient was a 96-year-old, otherwise healthy, Japanese man, who had been working as a breeder of fighting cocks for more than 70 years. He was bitten on his right forearm by one of the cocks and a few weeks later, two erythematous macules appeared on the right forearm, accompanied by a slight itchy sensation. While the first isolate of this dermatophyte was recovered from the region by Miyasato et al. in 2011, it was not obtained from the same fighting cock owned by

Building integrated mental health and medical programs for vulnerable populations post-disaster: connecting children and families to a medical home.

INTRODUCTION: Hurricane Katrina, a Category 3 hurricane, made landfall in August 2005. Approximately 1,500 deaths have been directly attributed to the hurricane, primarily in Louisiana and Mississippi. In New Orleans, Louisiana, most of the healthcare infrastructure was destroyed by flooding, and > 200,000 residents became homeless. Many of these internally displaced persons received transitional housing in trailer parks ("villages") under the auspices of the [US] Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). PROBLEM: The FEMA villages are isolated from residential communities, lack access to h

Late neoplastic changes following medical irradiation.

New additions since 1968 to the literature on radiation carcinogenesis in man support the earlier conclusion of an approximately linear increase in cancer incidence in a broad intermediate dose range for most sites of cancer. Questions are raised regarding the nature of the dose-response relation at very low and at very high dose exposures. Analyses of some data on exposure to radiation from internal deposits of radioactive material suggest that the dose-response curve at low and intermediate ranges in concave up, implying a smaller effect per unit exposure at very low doses than at intermedia

[Onychomycoses: epidemiology, causative agents and assessment of diagnostic laboratory methods].

Since March 2007 to March 2011, 414 patients with onychopathies were prospectively analyzed. Prevalence of the toenail and fingernail mycoses was 78 % and 58 %, respectively. The major etiological agents were Trichophyton rubrum, Candida spp. and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Dermatophytes were more frequently cultured from toenails, whereas Candida spp. from fingernails (both, p < 0.05). In candidal onychomycosis, species different from C. albicans were prevalent. A higher prevalence of toenail and fingernail mycoses, a predominance of T. rubrum in toenails (p < 0.05), and greater positivity i

Estimated Burden of Fungal Infections in Namibia.

Namibia is a sub-Saharan country with one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world. Although care and support services are available … 3 cases of cryptococcal meningitis and 836 cases of Pneumocystis pneumonia are estimated each year. Tinea capitis infections were estimated at 53,784 cases, and mucormycosis at five cases. Data were missing for fungal keratitis and skin neglected fungal tropical diseases such as mycetoma. The present study indicates that approximately 5% of the Namibian populat …

Cutaneous infectious diseases: Kids are not just little people.

The changes in immune response that occur with age play a significant role in disease presentation and patient management. Evolution of the innate and adaptive immune systems throughout life, influenced partly by hormonal changes associated with puberty, plays a role in the differences between pediatric and adult response to disease. We review a series of manifestations of dermatologic infectious diseases spanning bacterial, viral, and fungal origins that can be seen in both pediatric and adult age groups and highlight similarities and differences in presentation and disease course. Mycological and electron microscopic study of Solanum chrysotrichum saponin SC-2 antifungal activity on Candida species of medical significance.

Solanum chrysotrichum is utilized in traditional Mexican medicine for the treatment of mycotic skin infections. Several microbiological studies have provided evidence of its antifungal activity against dermatophytes and yeasts. S. chrysotrichum saponins have been identified as a group of compounds with antifungal activity and saponin SC-2 has demonstrated to be the most active. Previous clinical studies have shown the therapeutic effectiveness of S. chrysotrichum-derived saponin-standardized herbal products in the treatment of Tinea pedis and Pityriasis capitis. There is no previous evidence o

Low-dose X-ray depilatory treatment induces trichoblastic tumors of the scalp.

BACKGROUND: Depilatory radiotherapy for ringworm was largely used before antifungals were available. Patients who underwent this treatment are at high risk of developing scalp tumors or other cancers. The aim of this study was to characterize scalp tumors occurring after X-ray therapy for ringworm. METHODS: We included cases of postradiotherapy scalp tumors recorded at the Dermatology Department of the Charles Nicolle Hospital, Tunis between 1988 and 2001. We recorded clinical descriptions and all cases were resubmitted to microscopic analysis. RESULTS: Sixty-one tumors occurred in 33 men an
