Using fetal brain cells for therapeutic purposes after a spontaneous abortion can be justified under similar pre-conditions like the removal of an organ post mortem. With an artificially induced abortion, however, there is the danger of justifying the act of abortion by combining it with that positive purpose. In this case any therapeutic utilization of fetal brain cells would only be justifiable, if every step of such a procedure could completely be isolated from the ethically unjustifiable abortion.

Ocular tissue transplantation has come under scrutiny after potential infected tissue was transplanted into healthy patients. In parallel with increased clinical demand, less than optimal or so-called marginal kidney grafts are being used for transplantation. In addition to donor age, it appears that several factors may impact negatively on the quality of the graft. Most importantly, a more precise definition of the term 'marginal graft' is needed. The present review analyzes potential risk factors, suggests scoring systems for a more precise definition, and discusses potential treatment options to improve the quality of marginal grafts.

The various methods of preserving bone for implantation are reviewed. Biological assay systems to determine the physiological and osteogenic potential of the implant are discussed. Sterilization remains the major problem. The influence of high-energy irradiation of freeze-dried bone is still uncertain. Experimentally and clinically it was found that the immunological status of the freeze-dried allo-implant is biocompatible.

In the field of pancreas transplantation great progress has been made in recent years. While the transplantation of the whole organ has lost importance, success could be reached with the transplantation of isolated islets of Langerhans and with the segmental pancreas transplantation in experiments and in clinical practice. The present-day research is focused particularly on influencing the antigenicity of the endocrine pancreas tissue and on methodical problems of segmental pancreas transplantation.

Primary hyperoxaluria is a recessive hereditary disturbance of glyoxylate metabolism caused by deficiency of the liver enzyme, alanine glyoxylate transaminase. The main symptoms are recurrent renal stones, nephrocalcinosis and renal failure. In the advanced state, the disease is frequently complicated by osseous disease, vascular insufficiency and cardiac arrhytmias caused by deposits of calcium oxalate in the tissue. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Renal transplantation systems across the world aim to achieve an optimal balance between fair access to deceased donor kidney transplants (equity) and efficient use of organs (utility). Kidney allocation systems are measured across a host of metrics, and there is no single agreed upon definition of success, which looks different for each system depending on the desired balance between equity and utility. This article evaluates the United States renal transplantation system's efforts to balance equity and utility while drawing comparisons to other national systems.

Utilization of pancreases for transplantation remains inferior to that of other organs. Herein, we analysed UK pancreas discards to identify the reasons for the low utilization rates. Data on all pancreases offered first for solid organ transplantation between 1st January 2005 and 31st December 2015 were extracted from the UK Transplant Registry. The number of organs discarded, reasons and the time point of discard were analysed.
