OBJECTIVES: The use of Coblation® intracapsular tonsillectomy for the treatment of sleep disordered breathing (SDB)/obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) has an increasing evidence base. However, the results for tonsillitis as the predominant indication for surgery are not as clear. Septic arthritis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a rarely seen clinical condition. Such an infection may be encountered following infections in the head and neck region, with direct or haematogenous spread to the joint. This article presents the case of a patient with tonsillitis leading to septic arthritis of the TMJ and reports the results of a review of the literature.

We review a unique case of NUT midline carcinoma that presented in a young girl with an initial diagnosis of tonsillar abscess. We stress the importance of assaying poorly differentiated carcinomas in young patients for the t(15;19) translocation. We describe a 49-year-old man who presented with a cervical mass of a week's evolution, which clinically mimicked a tumoral expansion. We report the case of a 14 years old girl patient with recurrent tonsillitis who had been diagnosed and admitted previously with Plaut-Vincent's angina. Six weeks after leaving the hospital she was assited in Emergencies by an infectious mononucleosis associated to unilateral tonsillar necrotizing ulceration from which a sample was taken to microbiological exam finding the fusospirochaetal complex Borrelia vincenti and Fusobacterium necrophorum. A literature review at the respect of such association and its treatment is performed.

Nitric oxide (NO) degradation products were assayed in lacunar discharge in chronic compensated and decompensated tonsillitis before and after treatment on the ultrasound device Tonsillor. Children with a compensated or uncompensated form of acute or chronic tonsillitis demonstrate high platelet aggregation resultant in faster formation of platelet aggregates, an increased maximum size of these aggregates, faster achievement of the maximum platelet aggregation. Local drug therapy, combined drug + ultrasound and laser therapy failed to normalize platelet aggregation. The best effect on platelet aggregation was obtained in combined treatment with ultrasound and laser.

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the tonsil as a diagnostic tool in evaluating the microflora in chronic tonsillitis has not been popularized. A prospective study of 30 patients with chronic tonsillitis undergoing tonsillectomy was undertaken. FNA of the tonsil core was done under local/general anaesthesia. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the curative effect of shuanghuanglian on acute tonsillitis.
METHOD: 95 cases of acute tonsillitis were randomly divided into shuanghuanglian group (treatment group) and penicillin group (control group).
RESULT: The total effective rate in treatment group was 87.5%, hardly less than that (83.0%) in control group (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSION: Shuanghuanglian was an effective medicine in the treatment of acute tonsillitis, in addition, it was effective for virus infection.

Immune status was examined before and after tonsillectomy in 35 patients with various forms of chronic tonsillitis (CT). Measurements were made of main lymphocyte populations, IgA, IgG, IgM levels, functional activity of neutrophils, titers of antibodies to opportunistic microorganisms of the upper airways. We report on a 30-year-old patient with isolated, left-sided hypoglossal nerve palsy after uncomplicated, presumably streptococci-induced tonsillitis. Needle electromyography (EMG) of the tongue showed denervation changes in the muscles supplied by the left hypoglossal nerve. We have estimated that in 1995 more than 2 million pounds was spent by the National Health Service on throat swabs used to investigate chronic tonsillitis in the UK. This study was devised to assess the value of this investigation. The surface microflora, obtained using a throat swab, was compared with the microflora of the deep tonsil in 30 cases of chronic tonsillitis.
