Dentigerous or follicular cysts of odontogenic origin are innocuous benign cysts that are often linked with the crowns of permanent teeth. A dentigerous cyst circumventing permanent teeth fails to erupt and is often displaced into ectopic positions in the upper and lower jaw in the maxillofacial region. In the maxilla or upper jaw region, the impacted teeth are often displaced and/or shift into the maxillary sinus and apart from the nasal septum, mandibular condyle, coronoid process and the palate, to harbour such ectopic eruptions of teeth. We report a rare case of an impacted left third mola

Dentigerous cysts are benign maxillary odontogenic cysts associated with the crown of an unerupted tooth. They can expand the cortical bone to such an extent that they cause displacement of teeth and root resorption in the adjacent teeth. The purpose of this report was to describe the clinical case of a dentigerous cyst in a mandibular permanent molar of a 6-year-old child. The cyst caused the displacement of the bud of the permanent second molar and root resorption of the primary second molar. The cyst was treated by: (1) mucous fenestration using an erbium laser: (2) drainage of the fluid co

A 12-year-old patient sustained avulsions of both permanent maxillary central incisors. Subsequently, both teeth developed replacement resorption. The left incisor was extracted alio loco. The right incisor was treated by decoronation (removal of crown and pulp, but preservation of the root substance). Comparison of both sites demonstrated complete preservation of the height and width of the alveolar bone at the decoronation site, whereas the tooth extraction site showed considerable bone loss. In addition, some vertical bone apposition was found on top of the decoronated root. Decoronation is

Avulsed teeth that are stored extraorally in a dry environment for >60 min generally develop replacement root resorption or ankylosis following their replantation due to the absence of a vital periodontal ligament on their root surface. One negative sequelae of such ankylosis is tooth infra-positioning and the local arrest of alveolar bone growth. Removal of an ankylosed tooth may be difficult and traumatic leading to esthetic bony ridge deformities and optimal prosthetic treatment interferences. Recently a treatment option for ankylosed teeth named 'de-coronation' gained interest, particularl

Intermittent tongue, lip and cheek forces influence precise tooth position, so we here examine the possibility that tissue remodelling driven by functional bite-force-induced jaw-strain accounts for tooth eruption. Notably, although a separate true 'eruptive force' is widely assumed, there is little direct evidence for such a force. We constructed a three dimensional finite element model from axial computerized tomography of an 8 year old child mandible containing 12 erupted and 8 unerupted teeth. Tissues modelled included: cortical bone, cancellous bone, soft tissue dental follicle, periodont

Dentists encounter fractured anterior teeth on a regular basis. Various methods have been reported in the literature for rehabilitation of an extremely compromised tooth. This report presents a case where esthetic rehabilitation of a fractured maxillary right central incisor was performed employing a multidisciplinary approach: conventional endodontic treatment followed by orthodontic extrusion and final restoration using a CAD /CAM-fabricated one-piece milled zirconia post and core with a full-coverage zirconia crown.

This study evaluated the soft tissue stability around 10 single-tooth implants. All cases were treated following the same protocol, which included guided bone regeneration and connective tissue grafting. One year after prosthesis insertion the soft tissue shrinkage on the buccal side of the implant crown was 0.6 mm on average. The soft tissue volume in the papilla area increased on average by 0.375 mm, and none of the papillae lost volume.

External cervical resorption is a disease entity with an idiopathic etiology by which osteoclastic invasion cavitates teeth near the cementoenamel junction. The lesion, if left untreated, has the potential to progress and compromise tooth maintainability. Treatment of these lesions requires access (often surgical), removal of the affected tissue, and placement of a restorative material. This case series documents 10 external cervical resorption lesions that were treated by surgical crown lengthening with concurrent placement of a resin-modified glass-ionomer restoration and followed up for a p

Dentigerous cyst is an odontogenic developmental cyst arising from the pericoronal tissue of an impacted tooth, and that may exhibit various radiological aspects. The aim of this article is to present four cases of histologically confirmed mandibular dentigerous cysts to highlight diverse radiological presentations: one of classical appearance (well-limited unilocular radiolucent lesion surrounding the crown) and three which have shown radiological peculiarities (one cyst displacing the adjacent tooth, with bone but no root resorption, one cyst presenting hallmarks of infection and one multilo

In this paper the biomechanical response of a novel dental preparation technique, referred to as the Anatomic-Functional-Geometry treatment (AFG), is investigated through a 3D nonlinear finite-element modelling approach. A comparative investigation against a standard technique employed in dental clinical practice is carried out, by simulating typical experimental mechanical tests and physiological functional conditions. Failure mechanisms of treated tooth models are investigated through a progressive damage formulation implemented via a displacement-driven incremental approach. Computational r

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which develops due to fluid accumulation between the reduced enamel epithelium and unerupted tooth crown. The condition is frequently seen with the permanent dentition, usually associated with impacted mandibular third molars and maxillary canines. Rarely, dentigerous cyst occurs in association with a supernumerary tooth. Pain, swelling, and facial asymmetry are occasionally seen; however, they are usually asymptomatic and observed during radiographic examination. Early diagnosis and treatment planning entails thorough history taking, clini…

The Editorial Board of the Journal of Endodontics has developed a literature-based study guide of topical areas related to endodontics. This study guide is intended to give the reader a focused review of the essential endodontic literature and does not cite all possible articles related to each topic. Although citing all articles would be comprehensive, it would defeat the idea of a study guide. This section will present classification of traumatic injuries, crown/root and root fractures, canal obliteration secondary to traumatic injuries, root resorption secondary to traumatic injuries (inter

Detailed oro-maxillofacial studies using dental casts, pantomograms and cephalograms were performed in 28 patients with Turner's syndrome and compared statistically to the results from 23 normal short children. Small tooth crown size, short tooth roots and advanced dental age were characteristic of patients with Turner's syndrome. However, the incidence of peg shaped teeth, malocclusion, high arched palate and congenital anodontia were not characteristic of patients with Turner's syndrome. The coronal arch width (C.A.W.) and basal arch width (B.A.W.) were greater and the coronal arch length (C…

OBJECTIVE: The current clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of proximal indirect restorations in endodontically treated posterior teeth with deeply located margins following deep margin elevation compared to surgical crown lengthening.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Deep proximal cavities in endodontically treated posterior teeth were randomly assigned into two groups; deep margin elevation (DME) or crown lengthening (CL). The clinical attachment level (CAL), probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), crestal bone level (CBL), and secondary caries were evaluated at the baseline, 1,

The objective of this study was to determine the success of the natural crowns of endodontically treated canine teeth in pet dogs, instrumented and obturated using rotary driven non-taper nickel titanium files, through an occlusal access preparation, without the placement of a prosthetic cast metal crown. A search of medical records at a private veterinary dental referral practice was conducted to identify pet dogs having had endodontic treatment of one or more canine teeth over an eleven-year period (2007-2018). Follow up, performed by the same veterinary dental specialist, included a complet

Intracoronal radiolucencies in unerupted teeth are an uncommon radiographic finding; but their early detection and classification allow the most appropriate management protocol to be developed. Early separation of lesions into those that are developmental and remain static and those that are reactive and aggressive is necessary for a controlled outcome. The current paper reviews possible formative mechanisms and describes a case of severe intracoronal resorption resulting in loss of the tooth.

The treatment plan represents the final step in every diagnostic procedure and is the result of a series of assessments based on information gathered from a detailed clinical history. This clinical case reports the replacement of two central incisors that were lost because of a trauma. The advantages and disadvantages of the two treatment options (i.e. implantology or prosthetic restoration) were carefully evaluated in relation to the case in hand. Patient compliance and aesthetic requirements had been also considered. In this case, a conventional prosthetic restoration was performed using a m

Dental trauma is relatively common and can occur secondary to sporting injuries, falls, fights, or accidents. According to the International Association of Dental Traumatology, 50% of children experience dental trauma between the ages of 8 to 12. There are many options for endodontic and restorative treatments of traumatized teeth. Ribbond, which was introduced in the market in 1992, consists of bondable, reinforced ultra-high strength polyethylene fibers. Ribbond may be an option for the treatment of traumatized teeth because of its aesthetic properties; absence of additional tooth preparatio
