Mineralization of basement membrane mediates dentogingival adhesion in mammalian and nonmammalian vertebrates.

In order to elucidate the mechanism of adhesion between the gingiva and the tooth, detailed comparative ultrastructural studies of the dentogingival border were done in the monkey and shark. The tissues were prepared with or without demineralization for the ultrastructural observations. At the border, the internal basement membrane, which is firmly bound to the junctional epithelium through hemidesmosomes, was specialized differently in these species. In the monkey, the lamina densa was closely associated at its enamel side with an additional layer which had characteristics of the lamina densa

Oral health care in the 21st century: implications for dental and medical education.

The past decade has been turbulent for dental education, marked by debate about the future directions of the curriculum and the profession itself. The bulk of the dental school curriculum is still devoted to tooth restoration or replacement techniques, although the need for these procedures has declined. Some dental educators now advocate an oral physician model as the desired direction for the profession, with expanded training in systemic disease pathophysiology and a practice scope that extends beyond exclusive focus on the teeth and supporting structures. Proponents of this model contend f

Gingival invagination area after space closure: a histologic study.

The aim of this study was to show the micromorphologic findings (epithelium, connective tissue, bone) in a region of pronounced gingival invagination after space closure by analyzing a maxilla taken in autopsy from a 19-year-old woman who was orthodontically treated. The dental records were also at our disposal. The second left premolar was congenitally absent. This area displayed before therapeutic horizontal bone atrophy. For space closure, the first upper left molar was moved mesially with a fixed appliance. After space closure, pronounced gingival invagination was diagnosed. The lateral se

Root canal length determination by different methods in primary teeth: an in vivo study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the accuracy of root canal lengths (RCLs) in primary teeth using different clinical methods. METHODS: RCLs of 70 extracted human primary single-rooted teeth were estimated in vivo by a calibrated investigator using the electronic apex locator (EAL) method, radiovisiography (RVG), conventional radiography (X-ray), and tactile sensation method (TSM). The teeth were categorized into Group 1 (G1; teeth without physiological root resorption [PRR]); Group 2 (G2; teeth with one-fourth apical PRR); and Group 3 (G3; teeth with one-fourth to three-fourths lingual PRR).

Endodontic treatment of a taurodontic premolar with five canals.

Taurodontism is a morpho-anatomical abnormality in the shape of a tooth. An enlarged pulp chamber, apical displacement of the pulpal floor and no constriction at the level of the cemento-enamel junction are the characteristic features. Special care is required in all aspects of endodontic treatment of a taurodontal tooth, including identifying the orifice, canal exploration, cleaning, shaping and obturation of the root canal. This case report describes the successful endodontic treatment of a taurodontic mandibular second premolar with five root canals.

Local and chronic application of PTH accelerates tooth movement in rats.

We previously reported that whereas systemic continuous infusion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) accelerated orthodontic tooth movement, systemic but intermittent injection of PTH did not increase the rate of tooth movement. Analysis of these data suggested that continuous administration of PTH could be applicable for orthodontic therapy. In the present study, we investigated whether local and chronic application of PTH(1-34) would accelerate orthodontic tooth movement. To increase the residence time of PTH in the injected area, we used methylcellulose (MC) gel (2% W/V) for a slow-release formula

The mandibular posterior fixed partial denture.

Absence of a mandibular posterior tooth, particularly the first molar, is the basic common denominator in a wide range of dental disorders. Despite their awareness of this fact, many dentists are deterred from the routine construction of mandibular posterior fixed partial dentures because of several technical difficulties. An attempt has been made to show how these difficulties may be overcome to give a predictable and satisfactory result.

Removal of a fractured file beyond the apical foramen using robot-assisted endodontic microsurgery: a clinical report.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic file fractures are common complications of root canal treatment, and requires removal via specialized techniques such as endodontic microsurgery when the file beyond the apical foramen. It is often challenging to precisely and minimally remove a fractured file. Recently the use of dental autonomous robotic system (ATR) has shown promise in precisely and minimally in dental surgery. Therefore, this case details a technique for using the ATR system to precisely and minimally guide the removal of a fractured file beyond the apical foramen. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old

Impact of access cavities on root canal preparation, restorative protocol quality, and fracture resistance of teeth.

The survival of endodontically treated teeth depends on the remaining tooth structure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of different access cavities on root canal preparation, restorative protocol, and fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth. Fifty-six mandibular molars were divided into control (n=8) and experimental (n=16) groups according to access cavity: Traditional, Conservative, and Truss; and redistributed (n=8) according to instrumentation protocols: Reciproc Blue and R-motion. After, teeth were scanned in micro-CT and then filled and redistributed accordin

A new method to test the fracture strength of endodontically-treated root dentin.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a new method to test the fracture strength of endodontically-treated root dentin. METHOD: Bovine tooth roots were transversely cut into 2-mm thick sections and the root canals were enlarged with a taper of 0.06. An outer layer of resin composite was bonded to each section to make the root canal-to-outer radius ratio smaller than 1/3. The resulting discs were treated with irrigants at the inner surface and then fractured by inserting through the center a steel rod of the same taper attached to a universal test system. Fracture strength was calculated by using Lame's equat

Preservation in Young Patients of Pulp Vitality and Anatomical-Functional Restoration of the Lost Structure.

Often, young patients (≤30 years old) present with carious lesions that progress acutely, compromising a large amount of tooth structure. In these cases, a treatment to prevent the occurrence of pulp exposure and promote remineralization of caries-affected dentin is necessary to maintain healthy dental structure and allow more conservative interventions. The approach will be different when pulp exposure occurs: The therapeutic treatments will be focused on reparative dentin formation and prevention of microorganisms penetrating the pulp organ. Due to the different possible treatments that can

The bond strength of adhesive resins to AH plus contaminated dentin cleaned by various gutta-percha solvents.

The optimal bonding of adhesives to dentin requires the sealer to be completely removed from dentinal walls. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different cleaning procedures using gutta-percha solvents on bond strength of adhesive resins to AH Plus contaminated dentin (APCD). The pulp chamber dentin surfaces were contaminated with AH Plus and cleaned with five different techniques (dry cotton, chloroform, orange oil, eucalyptol, and ethanol). Then, Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) (Kuraray), and Tetric N Bond (TNB) (Ivoclar Vivadent) were applied and filled with a composite resin. Th

Effects of medications and laser on induced tooth movement and associated root resorption: four key points.

The following four fundamental points on the use of experimental models will be described to ensure an accurate evaluation of the effects of medication and laser therapy on induced tooth movement and associated root resorption: (1) If the objective is to check the effect on root resorption, the forces experimentally applied must produce a lesion on the cementoblast layer in all specimens; (2) If the objective is to optimize induced tooth movement and reduce treatment time without side effects, the forces experimentally applied should not produce a lesion in the cementoblast layer in any specim

Esthetic 7/8 crown--the Tucker technique.

As restorative dentists, one of the largest challenges we face is to restore proper form and function while considering the impact on the esthetic outcome. One must consider the clinical strengths and weaknesses of various materials and their applicability in different situations. For each clinical situation, there is always a most favorable choice coordinating material and design for optimum physiological, functional and esthetic results. The cast gold 7/8 crown with esthetic buccal margin, as designed and advocated by Dr Richard V Tucker, is an extremely valuable procedure, providing a very

Training sports dentists: a role in elite sport and society.

Within the specialised world of elite sports, it is important that specifically well-trained 'sports dentists' are available to support elite athletes. Their role may be very different to that of the general dental practitioner, as the sports dentist needs to have a clear understanding of sporting dental trauma, prevention of tooth tissue loss, screening of athletes during preparation for major sporting events, and be adaptable to the field-of-play role during sporting events. In addition, they need to fulfil the role of a general dental practitioner as well. The training of these individuals
