Preoperative transcranial magnetic stimulation for picture naming is reliable in mapping segments of the arcuate fasciculus.

In preoperative planning for neurosurgery, both anatomical (diffusion imaging tractography) and functional tools (MR-navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation) are increasingly used to identify and preserve eloquent language structures specific to individuals. Using these tools in healthy adults shows that speech production errors occur mainly in perisylvian cortical sites that correspond to subject-specific terminations of the major language pathway, the arcuate fasciculus. It is not clear whether this correspondence remains in oncological patients with altered tissue. We studied a heteroge…

A transcranial magnetic stimulation study for the investigation of corticospinal motor pathways in children with cerebral palsy.

The aim of this study is to perform transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-based investigation of corticospinal motor pathways in children with cerebral palsy (CP) secondary to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). TMS parameters including motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and central motor conduction time (CMCT) were recorded in 38 children with CP and 46 age-matched healthy controls. The z-score of MEPs were analyzed with respect to the types of MRI patterns of cortical involvement in children with CP. MEP latency values were correlated with the weight and height of children and to reflect th…

Transcranial magnetic stimulation with acepromazine or dexmedetomidine in combination with levomethadone/fenpipramide in healthy Beagle dogs.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of two sedation protocols on transcranial magnetic motor evoked potentials (TMMEPs) after transcranial magnetic stimulation in medium sized dogs. Onset latencies and peak-to-peak amplitudes, elicited in the extensor carpi radialis and cranial tibial muscles, were analysed in 10 healthy Beagles that received either acepromazine or dexmedetomidine in combination with levomethadone/fenpipramide, in a crossover design. Similar TMMEP recordings could be made using both sedation protocols at 80-90% stimulation intensity; however, there were signifi…

Anti-depressive mechanism of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in rat: the role of the endocannabinoid system.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to treat depression has been thoroughly investigated in recent years. However, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) paradigm was applied to male Sprague Dawley rats. Then rTMS was performed for 7 consecutive days, and the anti-depressive effects were evaluated by the sucrose preference test (SPT), the forced swimming test (FST), and the open-field test (OFT). Hippocampal cannabinoid type I receptor (CB1) expression was measured, and the expression levels of brain-derived…

Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation add-on for the treatment of auditory hallucinations: a double-blind study.

BACKGROUND: About 25% of schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations are refractory to pharmacotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy. We conducted a deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) pilot study in order to evaluate the potential clinical benefit of repeated left temporoparietal cortex stimulation in these patients. The results were encouraging, but a sham-controlled study was needed to rule out a placebo effect. METHODS: A total of 18 schizophrenic patients with refractory auditory hallucinations were recruited, from Beer Yaakov MHC and other hospitals outpatient populatio…

A transcranial magnetic stimulation study of the effects of cannabis use on motor cortical inhibition and excitability.

Active compounds in cannabis such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) interact with the inhibitory neurotransmitter delta-aminobutyric acid (GABA) but little is known about the functional effects of cannabis on human cortical brain processes. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate whether patients with chronic cannabis use demonstrate abnormalities in cortical inhibition or excitability. In all, 42 chronic cannabis using subjects (divided into heavy and light using subjects) and 19 controls were included in the study. Single and paired pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation were used to…

Diagnostic relevance of transcranial magnetic and electric stimulation of the facial nerve in the management of facial palsy.

OBJECTIVE: Earlier investigations have suggested that isolated conduction block of the facial nerve to transcranial magnetic stimulation early in the disorder represents a very sensitive and potentially specific finding in Bell's palsy differentiating the disease from other etiologies. METHODS: Stimulation of the facial nerve was performed electrically at the stylomastoid foramen and magnetically at the labyrinthine segment of the Fallopian channel within 3 days from symptom onset in 65 patients with Bell's palsy, five patients with Zoster oticus, one patient with neuroborreliosis and one pat…

Sismotherapy (ST) brings about numerous neurobiological changes, particularly changes in neuromediators and their receptors, second messenge … ulsions. However, recent preclinical data using attenuation, and clinical findings using reiterated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), suggest that it may not be necessary to provoke a clonic convulsion in order to achieve the beneficial psychotropic and anticonvulsant effects of ST. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Individualized Spots Based on Task functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Improves Swallowing Function in Poststroke Dysphagia.

Background: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has not previously been used to localize the swallowing functional area in repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment for poststroke dysphagia; Traditionally, the target area for rTMS is the hotspot, which is defined as the specific region of the brain identified as the optimal location for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). This study aims to compare the network differences between the TMS hotspot and the saliva swallowing fMRI activation to determine the better rTMS treatment site and investigate changes in fun…

Multimodal Imaging of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Effect on Brain Network: A Combined Electroencephalogram and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been increasingly used to treat many neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the clinical response is heterogeneous mainly due to our inability to predict the effect of rTMS on the human brain. Our previous investigation based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) suggested that neuroimaging-guided navigation for rTMS could be informed by understanding connectivity patterns that correlate with treatment response. In this study, 20 individuals with a balance disorder called Mal de Debarquement Syndrome completed hig…

Neuromodulatory effects of offline low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the primary motor cortex (M1) can modulate cortical excitability and is thought to influence activity in other brain areas. In this study, we investigated the anatomical and functional effects of rTMS of M1 and the time course of after-effects from a 1-Hz subthreshold rTMS to M1. Using an "offline" functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-rTMS paradigm, neural activation was mapped during simple finger movements after 1-Hz rTMS over the left M1 in a within-subjects repeated measurement design, including rTMS and sham stimulation. A sig…

[The efficacy of magnetic transcranial stimulation in treating treatment-resistant or prolonged depression in a clinical sample].

INTRODUCTION: Depression is a common, serious and often chronic disorder and one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. The annual prevalence of depression is 5-10%, twice as high among women as men and the lifetime prevalence is at least 20%. Up to a third of depressed individuals meet criteria for treatment-resistant depression, where two antidepressants have been tried for at least 6 weeks each at therapeutic doses. As of January 2022 transcranial magnetic stimulation for adults with treatment-resistant depression that has not responded to other forms of treatment has been available…

Transcranial magnetic stimulation to the angular gyrus modulates the temporal dynamics of the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) delivered to the angular gyrus (AG) affects hippocampal function and associated behaviors (Thakral PP, Madore KP, Kalinowski SE, Schacter DL. Modulation of hippocampal brain networks produces changes in episodic simulation and divergent thinking. 2020a. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 117:12729-12740). Here, we examine if functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-guided TMS disrupts the gradient organization of temporal signal properties, known as the temporal organization, in the hippocampus (HPC) and entorhinal cortex (ERC). For each of 2 TMS sessions, TM…
