A new method to record subglottal pressure waves: potential applications.

Rapid subglottal pressure changes related to the glottal cycles influence the aerodynamics of phonation. Various methods to measure these have been developed, but are not practical for routine phoniatric use. For that reason, a noninvasive measurement tool is necessary. This article presents a technique that uses a microphone positioned at the skin of the jugular fossa to record the signal which arises in the subglottal spaces and is transmitted through the soft tissue to the surface of the skin. Using the program Glottal Segmentation of Voice and Speech, jugular microphone recordings from two

Evaluating a new intrauterine pressure catheter.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance and verify the safety of the Koala Intrauterine Pressure Catheter (IUPC) in clinical use. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty IUP Koala Catheters were placed in laboring women. IUPC monitoring provided diagnostic information in assessing the pressures generated by the myometrium during the labor and delivery process. Information was recorded pertaining to the catheters' safety, ease of use, accuracy, zeroing, drift and amnioinfusion capability. Comparisons were made to a preexisting IUPC. RESULTS: The Koala catheter was safe to introduce into the intrauterine cavity.

Magnitude of Neck-Surface Vibration as an Estimate of Subglottal Pressure During Modulations of Vocal Effort and Intensity in Healthy Speakers.

PURPOSE: This study examined the relationship between the magnitude of neck-surface vibration (NSVMag; transduced with an accelerometer) and intraoral estimates of subglottal pressure (P'sg) during variations in vocal effort at 3 intensity levels. METHOD: Twelve vocally healthy adults produced strings of /pɑ/ syllables in 3 vocal intensity conditions, while increasing vocal effort during each condition. Measures were made of P'sg (estimated during stop-consonant closure), NSVMag (measured during the following vowel), sound pressure level, and respiratory kinematics. Mixed linear regression wa

Interaction of papaverine with the enalapril-induced cough in guinea pig.

BACKGROUND: Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEIs) like enalapril are extremely effective in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. One of the most important side-effects of these drugs which can lead to cessation of therapy is a persistant dry cough, induced because of increased bradykinin levels in the lung. Although antitussive alkaloids like codeine are effective in suppressing this cough, they too present a wide range of side-effects, most notably addiction. OBJECTIVE: In a previous work we were able to show that noscapine, a non-narcotic antitussive agent, was able t

[An experimental study of the surgical trauma on the rabbit's lens suspensory apparatus after cataract surgery].

Extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) implantation requires that the posterior capsule and the zonules remain sufficiently intact. To assess the surgical trauma on the lens suspensory apparatus of the enucleated rabbit eye, we developed a new fine pressure gauge that could quantitate its strength. The cornea and the iris of enucleated eyes were removed to allow clear visualization of the anterior surface of the lens to the equator. Afterwards several types of anterior capsulotomy were performed for ECCE and PC-IOL implantation. And then the le

Adjustable compression wraps: stretch, interface pressures and static stiffness indices.

BACKGROUND: Adjustable compression wraps (ACWs) may represent the future of compression for the treatment of the most severe stages of chronic venous diseases and lymphedema. We tested in five healthy subjects: Coolflex® from Sigvaris®; Juzo wrap 6000®, Readywrap® from Lohmann Rauscher®; Juxtafit® and Juxtalite® from Medi®, Compreflex® from Sigvaris®. The objective of this pilot study was to study the stretch, interface pressures, and Static Stiffness Index (SSI) of the six ACWs applied to the leg. METHODS: The stretch was evaluated by stretching the ACWs to their maximum length. Interface pr

Telemetric monitoring of penile pressure during mating in rats after chronic spinal cord injury.

In men with a spinal cord injury (SCI), erectile function, ejaculation, and fertility are severely impaired. The present study utilized a telemetric pressure transducer implanted into the corpus cavernosum of the penis to examine sexual function during awake mating behavior in a rat contusion model with a range of Infinite Horizon Impactor forces distributed between 150 and 215 kdyn. The mating behavior paradigm included examination of the counts, average pressure, and average duration for mounts, intromissions, and ejaculations. Male Wistar rats were mated with receptive females in 30-min ses

The delta isoform of CaM kinase II is required for pathological cardiac hypertrophy and remodeling after pressure overload.

Acute and chronic injuries to the heart result in perturbation of intracellular calcium signaling, which leads to pathological cardiac hypertrophy and remodeling. Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) has been implicated in the transduction of calcium signals in the heart, but the specific isoforms of CaMKII that mediate pathological cardiac signaling have not been fully defined. To investigate the potential involvement in heart disease of CaMKIIdelta, the major CaMKII isoform expressed in the heart, we generated CaMKIIdelta-null mice. These mice are viable and display no ove

Focal adhesion protein zyxin is a mechanosensitive modulator of gene expression in vascular smooth muscle cells.

Excessive deformation of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) caused by a prolonged increase in blood pressure (eg, in hypertension) results in an adaptive remodeling of the vessel wall that is characterized by SMC hypertrophy or hyperplasia and contributes to fixation of the increase in blood pressure. The onset of this process is characterized by a unique change in gene expression in the SMC. However, thus far, no transcription factor has been identified that specifically mediates mechanosensitive gene expression in these cells. Therefore, the role of a putative mechanotransducer, the cytoske

Tracheal tube cuff pressure during cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass.

To determine the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) on tracheal cuff pressure, we have measured intracuff pressure (ICP) in 29 consecutive patients undergoing cardiac surgery with CPB. Premedication comprised hyoscine and, after induction of anaesthesia with diazepam and fentanyl, followed by vecuronium, the trachea was intubated using a Portex Profile tracheal tube. Anaesthesia was maintained with high-dose fentanyl and 100% oxygen. ICP was measured with a transducer and the ICP was adjusted to 20 mm Hg. CPB was used with mild to deep hypothermia and blood-gas tensions were regulated acc

Skin vascular bed is a potential blood reservoir during heat stress.

To determine the potential role of the skin vasculature as a blood reservoir, we measured venous compliance (Cv), resistance (Rv), and their product, the time constant of venous drainage (tau sk = RvCv), in skin flaps from the hindlimbs of 15 dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium at different core temperatures (Tc, 37-42 degrees C), skin temperature (Ts, 25.3-50.0 degrees C), and during an infusion of papaverine (5%). The vasculature of the flap was isolated, and a double-occlusion technique was used to measure the static pressure in the venous compartment. The blood volume of the flap w

Neurogenic cerebral vasodilation from electrical stimulation of the cerebellum in the monkey.

The effect of stimulation of fastigial nucleus (FN) on cerebral blood flow (CBF) was examined in anesthetized, paralyzed monkeys. CBF was measured with a flow transducer chemically implanted on the left common carotid artery. The left external carotid artery and its branches were ligated. Electrical stimulation of the fastigal nucleus produced rapid (within two seconds) increases in arterial pressure (AP) and heart rate. Mean carotid blood flow (MCBF) rose 77% (+/- 40% SEM) above control and followed the increases in mean arterial pressure (MAP). Calculated cerebrovascular resistance decreased

Study of the force dynamics at the capsular interface related to ciliary body stimulation in a primate model.

PURPOSE: To study the mechanical dynamics between the zonuli-capsular complex and an accommodating intraocular lens mechanics simulator using pharmacological stimulation of the ciliary body in a primate eye. METHODS: Following phacoemulsification removal of the lens, force/movement gauges simulating the accommodating intraocular lens mechanics were implanted in 8 primate eyes (4 positioned in-the-bag and 4 on-the-bag). The gauge readings were taken under full effect of pilocarpine 4% or atropine 1% starting 6 weeks after surgery and following 3-month intervals for 30 months. RESULTS: An aver

The effects of external acoustic pressure fields on a free-running supercavitating projectile.

Proliferation of supercavitating torpedoes has motivated research on countermeasures against them as well as on the fluid phenomenon which makes them possible. The goal of this research was to investigate an envisaged countermeasure, an acoustic field capable of slowing or diverting the weapon by disrupting the cavitation envelope. The research focused on the interactions between high pressure amplitude sound waves and a supercavity produced by a small free-flying projectile. The flight dynamics and cavity geometry measurements were compared to control experiments and theoretical consideration

Stiffness of the pleural surface of the chest wall is similar to that of the lung.

To address the role of the parietal pleura in reduction of mesothelial shear stresses during breathing, we measured the stiffness of the parietal pleural surface of mammalian chest walls using microindentation. The pleural surface was indented over ribs and intercostal spaces with rigid flat punches (tip radii of 0.01, 0.02, and 0.1 cm) to probe stiffness at length scales comparable with those of surface asperities. We found a tissue shear modulus of 6700 dyn/cm2 and pleural membrane tension of 4900 dyn/cm, with a geometric standard deviation of 0.42. These values are similar to those measured

Physiological correlates of colonic motility in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome is frequently encountered in clinical practice, and it has been repeatedly suggested that abnormal colonic motor activity is one of the major pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for the origin of symptoms in such disorder. If this statement is true, then high-amplitude propagated colonic contractions (HAPCs), i.e. the mass movements, may play an important role. To test this hypothesis, we conducted an investigation by recording colonic motility for a prolonged (24 h) period in 25 patients with irritable bowel syndrome and in 18 healthy volunteers, to compare the

Role of Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription signaling pathway in hormonal cancer therapeutic resistance and lineage plasticity.

Cancers of the breast and prostate are one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in women and men, respectively. Although several treatment options have been developed to transform these cancers into manageable chronic diseases, they still contribute to over 70 000 deaths each year in the United States. Though majority of these cancers belong to slow growing differentiated subtypes, the cancers evolve over time due to treatment-related pressure into aggressive treatment-resistant types. A mechanism attributed to the transformation of hormonal and other cancers into aggressive treatment-refrac
