Testosterone therapy is a cornerstone of medical treatment for transgender men who choose to undergo it. The goal of testosterone therapy is usually to achieve serum testosterone concentrations in the male reference range. Testosterone has several desired effects as well as undesired and unknown effects. The desired effects include increased facial and body hair, increased lean mass and strength, decreased fat mass, deepening of the voice, increased sexual desire, cessation of menstruation, clitoral enlargement, and reductions in gender dysphoria, perceived stress, anxiety, and depression. Intersex people and bodies have been considered incapable of integration into society. Medical interventions on often healthy bodies remain the norm, addressing perceived familial and cultural demands, despite concerns about necessity, outcomes, conduct and consent. A global and decentralised intersex movement pursues simple core goals: the rights to bodily autonomy and self-determination, and an end to stigmatisation. The international human rights system is responding with an array of new policy statements from human rights institutions and a handful of national governments recognising the r

Transsexual (TS) individuals seem to display an increased risk in having eating disorders. Several case reports describe TS individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN). In order to understand better the impact of gender dysphoria (GD) and hormonal/surgical treatments on the occurrence and course of eating disorders in TS patients long term follow-up studies are needed. We present here a 41-year-old female-to-male TS patient suffering from AN. History revealed that pathological eating habits could strongly be associated with her GD. Hormonal and surgical treatments resulted in substantial improvemen

Medical intervention for transgender adolescents is a controversial issue but a recently published article describing long-term psychological outcomes using ‘the Dutch model’ of care should help to silence critics and reassure the growing number of clinicians treating this patient population.

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this article are to describe two cases of breast cancer in male-to-female transsexuals and to review eight cases previously reported in the literature.
CONCLUSION: Breast cancer occurs in male-to-female transsexuals who receive high doses of exogenous estrogen and develop breast tissue histologically identical to that of a biologically female breast. This exposure to estrogen results in increased risk of breast cancer. The first patient described is a male-to-female transsexual with screening-detected ductal carcinoma in situ and a family history of breast cancer. T

Transgender (trans) communities in Guatemala are severely and disproportionately affected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with overall HIV prevention and care services severely limited. Our binational community-based participatory research partnership sought to identify priorities for advancing HIV health equity and curtailing the epidemic within Guatemalan transgender communities. In June 2024, we held five stratified, in-person Spanish-language listening sessions in Guatemala City with community leaders (N = 18) representing grassroots trans advocacy groups, frontline mental healt

Genital gender-affirming surgery (GAS) aims to alleviate feelings of gender dysphoria and support psychosexual outcomes. However, little is known of sexual activity and satisfaction of transmen after phalloplasty or metoidioplasty. A clinical follow-up study was conducted in transmen at least one year after genital GAS in order to evaluate measures of experienced sexuality. Participants (N = 38) received a set of self-constructed questionnaires on sexual relationships and orientation, use of genitals during sexual contact, and the experienced influence of surgery on sexuality. Twenty-nine had

CONTEXT: According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, nearly 1.5 million people spend at least 1 night in an emergency shelter or transitional housing each year, and more than 500,000 people are homeless on a given night in the United States. To our knowledge, limited data exist regarding the prevalence of homelessness in ED patients by gender (male, female, and transgender).
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of homelessness by gender in 3 EDs in Pennsylvania.
METHODS: From May 2015 through February 2016, patients in 3 EDs were approached to take a 5-question homelessne

OBJECTIVE: To examine temporal changes in the number and demographic composition of transgender/gender non-binary (TGNB) population using data from integrated health care systems.
METHODS: Electronic health records from Kaiser Permanente health plans in Georgia and Northern and Southern California were used to identify TGNB individuals, who sought care from January 2006 to December 2014, and the data were analyzed by year, site, age, and sex assigned at birth.
RESULTS: In 2006, the number of TGNB people (and corresponding 95% CI) per 100 000 population were 3.5 (1.9, 6.3) in Georgia, 5.5 (4.

The purpose of this article is to explore issues that pertain to the needs of gay men, lesbians, and bisexual and transgender (GLBT) students as a subgroup in U.S. dental schools. The increasing visibility of GLBT persons in all aspects of life is one aspect of the changing face of the U.S. population. Increasingly, there is dialogue about issues related to GLBT persons, their nontraditional families, and their full engagement in society. Recent court decisions, changing policies in states and municipalities, and increasing acceptance in society promote inclusion. Likewise, this dialogue has e

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women, particularly those who have experienced criminal justice involvement, have particularly high HIV burdens, and a majority of those in jail have substance use disorders (SUDs). MSM and transgender women also experience elevated rates of incarceration. Once community re-entry occurs, individuals are in a critical period for addressing potential risks of HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) acquisition and negative sequelae of substance use. Further, the impact experienced by one's social and sexual networks experienced at
