A rare case of histopathologically revealed renal tuberculosis caused by intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) therapy is reported. A 67-year-old man was admitted complaining of fever and micturition pain. He had been undergoing prophylactic BCG instillation therapy for recurrent superficial bladder tumor. Physical examination was unremarkable. The tuberculin skin test was negative. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) was not demonstrated by acid-fast staining and culture of urine. However, MT was isolated by the polymerase chain reaction method. In the following 7 days, symptoms were dissol

Trends in RM with 2 TU PPD-L were analysed in 71 children at the time of detection of tuberculosis of intrathoracic lymph nodes (TITLN). The disease is often diagnosed in children getting infected with tuberculosis infection. Monotonous tuberculin tests represent the most frequent variant of tuberculin allergy at the time of TITLN diagnosis in children. Careful follow-up of children with monotonous RM (2 TU) may improve TITLN outcomes.

Although several brands of tuberculin purified protein derivatives (PPDs) are available for diagnosing bovine tuberculosis (bTB), comparative studies to determine their diagnostic accuracy are infrequent. In Ecuador we compared two different PPD brands for bTB diagnosis using skin testing and measuring skin thickness increase. Additionally, we evaluated four PPD brands, including those used for skin testing, in the Bovine Tuberculosis Interferon Gamma Test (IFN-γ test) measuring IFN-γ induction in whole blood. The study included 17 naturally tuberculosis-infected PPD and IFN-γ test positive bo

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) improve the identification of HIV-infected individuals who could benefit from latent tuberculosis infection therapy.
DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS: We searched multiple databases through May 2010 for studies evaluating the performance of the newest commercial IGRAs (QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube [QFT-GIT] and T-SPOT.TB [TSPOT]) in HIV-infected individuals. We assessed the quality of all studies included in the review, summarized results in prespecified subgroups using forest plots, and where appropri

Tuberculous uveitis (TBU) comprises a broad clinical spectrum of ocular manifestations, making its diagnosis challenging. Ophthalmologists usually require evidence from investigations to confirm or support a clinical diagnosis of TBU. Since direct isolation of the causative organism from ocular specimens has limitations owing to the small volume of the ocular specimens, resultant test positivities are low in yield. Immunodiagnostic tests, including the tuberculin skin test and interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs), can help support a clinical diagnosis of TBU. Unlike the tuberculin skin test

A study was done of the response to PPD-tuberculin, candida and the tuberculin conversion rate after BCG vaccination among 302 healthy children in northern Thailand. The children were grouped according to whether their parent(s) or other household contact(s) had tuberculoid leprosy (74 children), lepromatous leprosy (47 children), or all family members were healthy (181 children). No significant differences were detected in the responses to candida or PPD-tuberculin on initial skin testing or in the history of a previous BCG vaccination in the three groups of children. However, among the child

OBJECTIVE: A60 is a high molecular weight mycobacterial antigen complex. The detection of immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibodies to A60 has been advocated as a reasonably sensitive and specific test for active tuberculosis (TB). We aimed to compare the sensitivity of this test among HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative patients with pulmonary TB.
METHODS: The presence and concentration of anti-A60 IgG antibodies was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 208 HIV-seropositive and 91 HIV-seronegative Zaïrian patients with smear-positive pulmonary TB. The relationship between anti-A60 IgG l

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), an attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis), is the lead candidate vaccine for control of bovine tuberculosis (TB) in cattle. However, BCG vaccination sensitises cattle to bovine tuberculin, thus compromising the use of the current bovine TB surveillance tests. To address this, we have developed a diagnostic skin test that is not compromised by BCG vaccination and is able to detect BCG vaccinated animals that subsequently develop bovine TB following exposure to M. bovis. Building on previous work using 'in house' formulated protein cocktail reagents,

Vaccine development and our understanding of the pathology of bovine tuberculosis in cattle would be greatly facilitated by definition of the immunological correlates of protection and/or pathology. In this study we analyzed humoral immune responses in Mycobacterium bovis BCG-vaccinated and control cattle (in particular, the relationship between the intradermal comparative tuberculin skin test and serum immunoglobulin G [IgG] responses) against a range of mycobacterial antigens (MPB59, MPB64, MPB70, MPB83, ESAT-6, CFP-10, Acr1, and PstS-1) by multiantigen print immunoassay and conventional enz

BACKGROUND: Individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are at an increased risk of developing active tuberculosis (TB). It is known that treatment of latent TB infection (LTBI), also referred to as TB preventive therapy or chemoprophylaxis, helps to prevent progression to active disease in HIV negative populations. However, the extent and magnitude of protection (if any) associated with preventive therapy in those infected with HIV should be quantified. This present study is an update of the original review.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of TB preventive therap
