The geographic distribution of duodenal ulcer and its characteristics in rural areas of high incidence in developing countries are reviewed. The choice of surgical procedures is discussed in light of the bulky diet and nutritional problems of these countries. A vagotomy procedure is advised for duodenal ulcer and a Billroth I gastrectomy for gastric ulcers of the body of the stomach.

A 44-year-old woman with Graves' disease and exophthalmos developed a severe corneal ulcer caused by Pasteurella multocida after being bumped on her right eye by her pet dog. The organism was transferred from the patient to an abraded rabbit cornea and produced a similiar corneal ulcer and hypopyon.

The fragmentary knowledge of gastric ulcer aetiology is contrasted with the developing repertoire of short term drug treatments. Reasons are also advanced for believing that gastric ulcer may be a disease of diminishing importance and that this is due to environmental changes rather than to the introduction of effective treatments.

There have been notable advances in knowledge about peptic ulcer recently.
